Chapter 778: At Most, It Could Be Considered Illegal Cohabitation
As Adam lifted his foot to leave, he stopped in his tracks, turned around, and looked at Zane, who was sitting on the couch. "Mr. Lawrence, I heard that you divorced Miss Thompson before, and you haven't remarried yet?"
Zane looked up at Adam upon hearing his words. "Mr. Bennet, are you so concerned about our marital status?"
Adam smiled and glanced towards the kitchen before meeting Zane's gaze. "Not exactly. Although I may not be a good person, I still have certain boundaries when it comes to certain matters. At least I won't be like my father, entangled with his ex despite being aware of his marriage."
Adam's words were not explicit, but his intended meaning was clear.
Zane quickly understood Adam's implications and responded calmly, "I'm afraid that would disappoint Mr. Bennett."
Adam didn't say anything more and simply asked, "Is that so?"
Just then, Yanis emerged from the kitchen. Adam glanced at her face and then nodded towards Zane. "I won't disturb Mr. Lawrence's rest any longer."
After speaking, Adam looked at Yanis and said, "Miss Thompson, my apologies for the interruption."
Yanis nodded in response to Adam's farewell. "Mr. Bennett, take care."
Adam heard Yanis's reply, and a smile deepened at the corners of his lips. "You two really are a couple, speaking and behaving in the same way." However, Yanis didn't respond to Adam's comment. Instead, she brought the freshly made soup to Zane and placed it on the table. "Drink it while it's hot." Zane grunted in acknowledgment. "Alright."
The two of them continued their conversation, ignoring Adam, who was left on the side.
Adam didn't mind their lack of interest. When he saw that they had no intention of engaging with him further, he turned around and walked towards the door.
"Mr. Bennett."
Just as Adam reached the door, Yanis called out.
Upon hearing Yanis's voice, Adam halted his steps and turned to face her.
Yanis walked towards Adam and said, "I'll see you off, Mr. Bennett."
"Yanis." Zane called out after hearing Yanis's words.
Yanis looked at Zane and smiled. "Drink the soup first, I'll be there in a moment."
With that, Yanis walked towards Adam. "Mr. Bennett, let's go. I'll escort you out."
Adam glanced at Zane, nodded, and said, "Alright."
The two of them walked out together.
"Does Miss Thompson have something to say?" After they stepped out of the door, Adam was the first to speak.
When Yanis heard Adam's words, she looked at him and asked, "Mr. Bennett, you didn't just come to visit Zane today, did you?"
Adam smiled and replied, "Not entirely."
Pausing for a moment, Adam stopped and looked at Yanis. "What if I told you I came to see Miss Thompson?"
"Mr. Bennett, don't you think that's a bit crossing the line?" Yanis responded.
Adam said, "Why not? You're not married to Zane yet, right? So why can't I say it?"
"I and Zane..." Yanis began.
"Miss Thompson, as far as I know, you two are divorced and still haven't remarried. In your current situation, it's at most considered illegal cohabitation," Adam interrupted Yanis. Yanis didn't have a chance to finish her sentence before Adam spoke up.
Upon hearing Adam's words, Yanis couldn't come up with a rebuttal. What he said was the truth. After Yanis and Zane completed the divorce procedures, they hadn't taken the steps to remarry.
"Miss Thompson, if Zane truly loves you, why hasn't he taken the initiative to remarry you?" Adam calmly asked Yanis.
Yanis maintained her composure and looked at Adam. "Mr. Bennett, is sowing discord a tradition in the Bennett family?"
Adam paused for a moment, then chuckled lightly. "Maybe it is. So, has Neve done something similar?"
Yanis didn't respond to Adam's question directly but calmly said, "Mr. Bennett, regardless of my relationship with Zane, it has nothing to do with you."
Adam nodded. "I can tell that you both care about each other."
"Mr. Bennett, have a good day," Yanis said, signaling the end of the conversation, and turned to enter the house.
As she took a few steps, Adam's voice came from behind. "Miss Thompson, aren't you curious why Zane hasn't taken the initiative to divorce you?"
After going through so much together, Yanis hadn't given much thought to remarriage. As long as they were together, why would they need a piece of paper as proof?
So, Yanis hadn't considered this matter all this time.
"Miss Thompson, perhaps you believe that as long as you love each other and live a happy life together, the absence of that piece of paper doesn't matter. But Miss Thompson, have you ever thought that if something were to happen in the future, for Mr. Lawrence, you would be just a roommate because you have nothing to prove your relationship. At that time, would you still think the absence of that piece of paper doesn't matter?" Adam seemed to have seen through Yanis' thoughts.
Yanis stood still for a while, not responding to Adam's words, and proceeded to enter the house.
Adam stood in place, watching Yanis disappear from his sight, and then smiled to himself before turning and leaving.
Once Yanis entered the house, Zane immediately looked up and asked, "What did he say?"
Shaking her head, Yanis replied, "Nothing, just a few words about the rear-end collision last time."
Yanis walked up to the bowl on the table and checked it. "Why haven't you finished it? Didn't I tell you to finish it?"
Zane reached out and pulled Yanis closer, guiding her to sit on his lap. "I can't finish it. I'm a bit full."
"There's still some in the pot. Drink the rest," Yanis insisted.
Zane held Yanis tightly and shook his head gently. "Yanis, I really can't."
Yanis reached out and brought the bowl from the table. "Let me feed you. Take a few more sips."
These past few days, Zane had visibly lost weight, and Yanis couldn't help but feel a pang of heartache.
Zane looked at the soup Yanis brought to his lips and reluctantly took a few sips.
But he couldn't finish the soup in the bowl.
"You should rest for a while. I'll tidy up here. In the afternoon, I need to go to the shop. It's almost done today, and I want to check on it," Yanis said as she stood up and walked towards the kitchen, speaking to Zane.
Zane's gaze followed Yanis' figure, and after a moment, he softly called out, "Yanis."
"Yeah?" Yanis turned around to face Zane, holding the clean dishes. "What's wrong?"
"Did Adam really not say anything?" Zane asked.
Yanis shook her head. "Really, he couldn't say anything to me. We're not familiar with each other."
While talking to Zane, Yanis organized the kitchen. "I'll ask Auntie to come over and prepare dinner. I might be a little late coming back. Rest in your room for a while, okay?"
