Chapter 799: I Suddenly Understand You from Back Then

After Zane left, Phoebe turned to Yanis and whispered, "Let's go over there. There's a lounge area with a nice atmosphere."

Yanis nodded and followed Phoebe to the lounge area in the lobby.

"What would you like to drink?" Phoebe asked as they took their seats. "This hotel is quite nice. They have a coffee area and a dessert section. They basically have everything you could ask for."

Yanis pondered for a moment upon hearing Phoebe's words. "Do they have alcohol?"

Phoebe's eyes widened in surprise. "You want to drink alcohol?"

Yanis chuckled at Phoebe's astonished expression. "Can't I?"

"It's just that, in my impression, you don't seem like someone who would drink. And to ask for it willingly..." Phoebe said.

Yanis propped her chin and looked at Phoebe. "It's just that I haven't let myself go in front of you before. When I was with Bonnie and the others, I would occasionally have a drink. But how the alcohol affects me depends on my mood that day."

"So, if you're in a good mood, you won't cause any trouble?" Phoebe asked.

Yanis shook her head. "No, it's when I'm in a bad mood that I don't cause any trouble. If I'm in a good mood and I drink too much, I'll just peacefully fall asleep. But sometimes, it's unpredictable."

Phoebe used to believe that people like Yanis were not suitable for the Lawrence family or for Zane. Only women like Neve were a perfect fit for a prestigious family like the Lawrence family and for Zane. However, after experiencing certain things and gaining clarity, she realized that one should not judge people or situations solely based on surface appearances. The things on the surface are the easiest to deceive.

The two chatted casually for a while, and Phoebe asked the front desk to bring them two lattes.

Phoebe handed one of the cups to Yanis. "The taste is pretty good, not too bitter."

Yanis took a sip. "Not bad."

Setting down her coffee cup, Phoebe looked at Yanis and said, "Can I ask you a question?"

"What's the question?"

"If, and I mean if, you and my brother hadn't reconciled, and Ivan pursued you, would you have accepted him? After all, you both know each other quite well," Phoebe asked seriously, looking at Yanis. Upon hearing Phoebe's question, Yanis furrowed her brow slightly. "Why would you ask such a question?"

"Just answer me. If you hadn't made up with him, and he pursued you, would you have agreed to be with him? After all, you have a deep understanding of each other," Phoebe insisted.

Yanis shook her head. "No, and the main reason wouldn't be that I don't like him. It's because of Aunt Baxter, Ivan's mother. She would never agree to Ivan being with a woman who has been married and divorced."

After hearing Yanis' response, Phoebe couldn't help but frown. "I heard that she used to like you. If you were together, would she still object?"

Yanis softly spoke, "Aunt Baxter was indeed nice to me before. She even asked me if I had feelings for Ivan. At that time, I declined because I was already married to your brother, so it was impossible for me to have anything with Ivan. Aunt Baxter didn't know about my marriage, and she tried to encourage me to be with Ivan."

"But after the news about me and your brother broke out, Aunt Baxter approached me in private. She came to see me with Mila, who was introduced as Ivan's fiancée. Her words were full of reminders, warning me that Ivan and I were not suitable. Later on, things got out of hand, and for some reason, she kept thinking that there was something between Ivan and me." "What happened later?" Phoebe asked.

"She has been urging Ivan to get engaged to Mila all this time, even pushing them to get married within this year," Yanis recounted everything that had happened. After hearing Yanis' words, Phoebe fell silent for a few seconds. "So, the relationship between Ivan and Mila is completely over now, right?"

"Don't you already know?" Yanis looked at Phoebe and said softly.

Phoebe sighed. "It's just hearsay for me. I heard he's not getting married, so I came here to see for myself. I wouldn't have known the details if you hadn't told me." Yanis took a sip of her coffee and continued, "Between Ivan and me, there's only a simple friendship. There won't be anything more than that."

"Why does his mother always feel like there's something between you two?" Phoebe asked.

Yanis shook her head, thinking about Madison's actions. It was something she couldn't quite understand.

Why did Madison suddenly become so stubborn in believing that there was something between her and Ivan? She even went to the extent of wishing that Yanis and Ivan would never have any contact again. Phoebe leaned back in her chair, feeling a bit powerless. "I suddenly understand you from back then."

"What do you mean?" Yanis asked.

Phoebe sat up straight, holding her coffee cup, and spoke to Yanis. "Back then, when you liked my brother, and he was cold towards you, did you never consider giving up?"

Yanis had been asked this kind of question many times before. Bonnie had asked, Ivan had asked, even Old Mr. Cooke had asked. The Old Mrs. Lawrence had asked the same question before as well.

At that time, Yanis seemed to have answered it quite simply. She had just said that her heart's place had already been taken by him alone, unable to be cleared out, and there was no possibility of letting anyone else in.

If someone were to ask her why she had been so persistent back then, Yanis herself couldn't really say. She had just felt that being with Zane was worth it, regardless of how things turned out in the end. Because sometimes, when you start questioning whether what you're doing is worth it, it's already not worth it.

So at that time, she didn't think that doing all this for Zane was unworthy. But later on, those scattered incidents shattered her belief. Neve's involvement, followed by Lana's appearance, were both stumbling blocks on the path of Yanis and Zane's relationship.

She fell and got hurt with Neve, and the same happened on Lana's side.

After Lana, she truly wanted to give up.

But then she returned to the starting point, and now she's quite open-minded about certain things.

As long as the two of them are good, she won't be affected by anything unless Zane personally says it.

"At the beginning, I never thought about it, and I wouldn't have bothered. But later on, I did think about it and decided to let it go. Life is short, why should I put all my thoughts on just one person?" Yanis said. Phoebe looked at Yanis and said, "I still admire you."

"So, what's the main point of your question?" Yanis asked.

Phoebe remained silent for a few seconds. "I also want to try the courage you had back then."

When Yanis heard Phoebe's words, she looked at her and asked, "Did you tell Ivan that you like him?"

Phoebe shrugged. "He avoids me every day. If I didn't say you were coming here today, he probably wouldn't even talk to me."
