I Refuse to Divorce! -
Chapter 104
You could hear a pin drop in the office. Liam was wearing a gold watchon his lean hands, holding a platinum business card. It had his privatenumber on it.
Zoe took it from him gingerly. She stared at him for some time beforeasking softly, “Why would you help me, Liam? I thought you'd takeMason's side.”
He didn't answer her. Instead, he leaned back on his chair and smokedthe cigar wordlessly. Truth be told, he didn’t have a good reason fordoing this. If he had to replace a reason, then perhaps it was because ofwhat he saw in the hospital that day.
The cuts on her wrists were terrifying to look at and it reminded him somuch of the same injuries he had seen on his mother. There was adefinite difference between them, though. His mother was determinedto die and she had succeeded in her goal.
On the other hand, Zoe was doing everything she could to stay alive.Perhaps that was what triggered his compassion for her.
Zoe was gripping the business card tightly and her palms weresweating when she left Liam's law firm. She returned to Mason's sideand seemingly got her glorious life back. However, behind closeddoors, she was being tortured horribly.
Still, she rarely entertained the thought of leaving him because shedidn't even dare to think of the possibility of it. However, she could nowsee a glimmer of hope out of the despair that consumed her.
Taking the elevator, she arrived at the ground floor. She accidentallybrushed past Cecil when she exited through the revolving door. Theycould see each other but couldn't come in contact because of the glasspanels that separated them.
They were headed in different directions too. She was getting out of thebuilding while he was going on.
Zoe was still holding Liam's business card. She knew exactly who Cecilhad come here to meet. She knew he loved her, but she had no choicebut to let him down.
It wasn’t because she was married to Mason. It was because Cecil hadarrived too late. He had never confessed his love to her and she hadnever rejected him.
The revolving door was still spinning when the light shone on both ofthem. Zoe flashed him a faint smile. There was a sense of appreciationand a hint of sadness behind it.
If Mason wasn't around, she could've at least called Cecil without anyworries, visited his mother, and made some pizza with her. Both ofthem were warm, loving people!
However, life was always full unmet expectations.
Cecil wanted to save her from her fate, and she wanted to protect himfrom being dragged into it.
There was a black Bentley parked by the side of the building, a windowlowered to provide its inhabitant an uninterrupted view. Mason sat inthe car quietly and watched as his wife checked out the other man. Thesense of loss and sadness he saw in her eyes stabbed him rightthrough the heart.
She loved that man.
He didn’t care how she loved him, whether it was platonic or romantic. All he cared about was that she loved that man, and that unsettled him.Searching his memories, he wondered when she last looked at him inthe same way.
Was it three years ago?
The chauffeur was terrified by Mason's aura and kept quiet. He thoughtMason would flip out and take Zoe away by force.
However, Mason said lightly, “Let's go back to the office. Don’t say aword about this to her.”
Stepping on the gas, the chauffeur drove the black Bentley into thedistance.
Mason sat in the rear seat as a ray of sunshine shone through thecrack in the window, highlighting his stunning features.
He pondered over Zoe and what love meant for her. His mind traveledto the time when she used to love him, and then to what she said aftershe returned to him.
“There was no room for love in a marriage, only what people could getout of each other.’
That was what he thought as well, initially.
He paid a heavy price to get her to come back to him. At first, hethought he only needed a lady with whom he could sate his lust andtake to public functions, but he realized that he wanted more than that.He wanted Zoe's love.
He wasn't so naive as to think that he could buy her affections. If thatwere true, then he wouldn't be having this issue now.
