In Between The Alphas -
Chapter 34
To say that Jake was upset by Greg's decision would be an understatement and if looks could kill I would have been six feet under.
When Greg was talking to Logan he pulled me outside. "What the hell did you tell him?"
"Nothing," I said trying to pull my hand out of his grasp.
"You're lying," he spat, "I know you told him something; why else would he be taking you away?"
"I didn't tell him anything, please let me go."
"Is everything okay over here?" Greg asked as he stepped out and Jake immediately let go of my hand.
"Yeah," he nodded, "Everything is great."
Logan on the other hand was more than happy to let me go with Greg, in fact, Greg had barely finished his request when Logan gave us permission to leave. He even asked if we wanted to take an escort with us.
Diana was overjoyed by the thought of both of us moving into the pack. I originally thought she was just happy because of Greg and when I mentioned it she threatened to hit me with a stick and said she was happy because her friend was going to be with her. I almost cried when she called me her friend.
Greg and I went back on the same day because he didn't want to leave me alone with Jake. I could see how much it hurt him to leave his mate but he is as stubborn as he is a smart a*s and we left.
We have been here for the past four days; we should be leaving tomorrow and no matter how hard Greg tries I still haven't told him what was going on with Jake. I want to- I really do but I can't bring myself to say it.
I'm currently in the store because we wanted to spend our last day working at the grocery store just like the old times and it feels like I never left.
"It's about time you finally came back to see us," Mrs. Wiggins said and I offered her a bright smile, "You just upped and went back to your parents without so much as a word."
"I'm so sorry," I said softly, "It was honestly a last minute decision. My mum wasn't feeling too well so I had to go see her."
"I'll never hold it against a young girl for going to see her mother," she said with a smile and I almost felt bad for lying to her.
Greg had to give the town an excuse for why I had gone so suddenly so he told them that my mother was sick and I had to rush back home to see her.
"How is that boyfriend of yours?" she asked and my smile fell slightly but she noticed it and let out a short hum, "If you frown like that at the thought of him then I think he's not the one for you."
"I wasn't frowning because of him; I was thinking of something."
"Didn't your parents ever teach you not to lie to an old woman?" she tsked, "I have to go anyways; stay good Charlie."
"You too Mrs. Wiggins," I yelled after her.
The rest of the day went by almost the same way. I reconnected with a bunch of people and they all wished me luck in life. It felt so sad to know that I was finally leaving here. It may be a human town but they treated me like a person more than my own family ever did.
"It's okay to miss them you know," Greg said, "I know I will."
"It's different for you; you stayed here longer."
"It doesn't matter," he said, "This town just has a way of sneaking up on you and making you care even though you don't want to." I just nodded because he has a point, "I'm selling the store." "What?" I asked and he shot me a bored look.
"You're not deaf Charlie; don't act like it." he said and I rolled my eyes at him, "I'm selling the store and I'm using the money to buy another store in the pack. Logan told me about it before we left. His first option was to give it to me as a mating gift." "But you refused," I said knowing how far Greg's pride ran and he shot me a knowing look.
"So he cut the price down halfway for me and gave it to me. I did try to refuse but he is one stubborn bastard," He said with a small laugh, "He's a good guy."
"I guess so."
"He told me he was suspicious about you and Jake," he said making me turn to him, "In fact, he was the one who called me and told me to come over because he wanted me to check up on you." "Why would he do that?"
"I don't know why but I'm grateful he did," he said, "I don't want you staying with Jake anymore."
"I don't have anywhere else to go Greg."
"You could stay with Diana and I; I'm sure she won't mind."
"Yeah thanks but I'll pass."
"Charlie don't be stubborn."
"I'm not going to intrude on the both of you," I said in a sharp tone, "I'm happy that you care but I am fine."
"You're not," he snapped, "And if you pretending that you're fine when you're not then nobody is going to be able to help you."
"Maybe I don't need the help," I said softly, "Why can't you see that? I am perfectly okay and I don't need you to hover over me. You have a mate now so focus on her and be happy."
"I'm not a child, I'm capable of taking care of more than one person," he said, "Aubrey left you in my care; so I have to take care of you."
"And you have," I assured him, "You have done more than enough but you need to let me fight my own battles. Okay?"
He stayed quiet for a second before nodding, "Okay. I'll let you be but if he puts one more toe out of line then I'm going to damn the consequences."
"That's good enough for me." I said and he gave me a small smile.
"Come on it's time for bed," he said, "We have a very long day tomorrow."
"Greg?" I asked and he turned to me, "Who did you sell the house and the store to?"
"I sold it to Michael," he said and I when I shot him a confused look he continued, "He's Mr. Brennan's nephew."
I briefly remembered the chubby boy who Jake thought was flirting with me and let out a small laugh.
"What's so funny?" Greg asked and I shrugged.
"Time," I said softly, "It feels like an eternity ago that I first came here and another lifetime ago that I left and I never realized how fast the time went." He looked at me with a blank expression, "Do you think they'll ever replace me?"
"I don't know Charlie," he admitted, "But if they do then you have a massive support system behind you," he said, "You have me and Diana and even Logan."
"I understand you and Diana but not Logan."
"He cares about you in his own way," he said then he trailed off as if he was thinking about something.
"What's going on up there?" I asked and he looked at me and I saw the moment whatever he was thinking seemed to click in his head and he broke out into a smile, "That was creepy what the hell?" "Absolutely nothing," he said with a smile, "Goodnight Charlie."
