Into the Dark -

Calypso tried to scream but that did nothing except cause her to swallow more water. The servants had sewn rocks along the seams of her dress and tossed her body in the moat surrounding the castle as she slept. This was not the first time she had been put in this situation but this time she could not think straight. Her father seemed to have a thing for torturing her with water lately.
They had picked the worst time to torment her. Tomorrow she would attend the Vampire King’s ball and for the past week he had haunted her in her sleep. This latest dream was particularly vivid. She would have blushed from the memory if not for the dire circumstance she was currently facing. It did not help that she had woken from drowning under water. Her panic had caused her to react in a way in which she was not proud of. She could not gain control of her speeding heart and the longer she spent under the waves the harder her heart beat.
She knew that if she did not get in control of herself her father would let her die. Why bother if she cannot even survive a simple simulation, he would tell himself. The two kingdoms would just go to war again but that was nothing her father had not lived through before.
Calypso fumbled with buttons at the back of her dress; her fingers grew lazy the longer she was away from air. After a bit of a struggle, she was able to shrug off the heavy gown and pull herself to the surface. Now she needed to figure a way to land before she lost all her energy.
This was the first time they threw her into the moat therefore she had no way of knowing where to climb the wall surrounding it.
Due to the clouds covering the night sky, she could barely see a foot in front of her. Slowly swimming forward she felt along the wall holding up the right portion of the bridge. It was solid and smooth; there was no way she could climb up the side so she needed to quickly replace an alternative.
She tried to think like her father. He knew she hated water due to the amount of times she had been tormented with it; therefore he expected her to focus on replaceing a way up to the bridge when she should really be swimming down further into the water.
Calypso slowed her movements allowing the water to settle as she searched for any clue to get out. In the water below her, there was a faint blue glow against the castle wall. Taking a deep breath, she dove into the water towards it.
She could see the light reflecting off what appeared to be a gate made of gold and underneath it was what seemed to be a hole. Just to be sure she stuck her hand out her hand before swimming further. The gate quickly slammed shut narrowly missing her feet. She broke through the surface and appeared inside a dimly lit cave. Her father’s boots tapped impatiently on the edge and Calypso had the sudden urge to drag him under.
“That took you entirely too long Calypso. Next time try not to let your childish emotions get in your way,” she did not reply to his snide remark,” return to your room and get some sleep, you have a busy day tomorrow.”
She waited until he left before climbing out of the water. Her white under-slip was now soaked and partially see through.
Calypso tried her best to sneak back to her room without any servants seeing her. Her father would be livid if he found out she had been seen in such a vulnerable state.
Upon safely returning to her room, she changed into a dry nightgown and attempted to gain warmth snuggled under her blankets. The warming of her body along with her exhausted physical state allowed her to quickly drift to sleep.
**********
Calypso’s feet were buried in the soft, lush grass beneath her. Her blonde hair fashioned into a loose bun at the base of her neck and a midnight black dress hugged her chest tightly before loosening at her waist in a long train that trailed after her as she walked. She did not have to touch her face to know that a black masquerade mask was tied around her head. Birds she could not see sang a soft lullaby and flowers of all colors swayed as if dancing to the song.
Calypso could not remember a time when she was so at peace. It was short lived however when the birds stopped their chirping and fled their nests squawking their warning of danger. Clouds covered the bright sun and casted darkness over the once peaceful land.
“No!” she shouted in panic knowing what came with the darkness.
A deep velvety chuckle echoed through the field,” Don’t bother running, darling. Nothing can save you now.”
She easily recognized that rumbling voice,“You’re the Vampire King.”
She felt his hands grab her waist from behind and pull her back into a strong chest,” I’m your king, my love.”
Calypso clenched her teeth at that,” You are no king of mine,” she stated with confidence she did not know she possessed.
He wrapped one arm around her stomach gripping her waist with one hand while the other loosely gripped her neck to force her head back against his shoulder,” Now, now is that any way to speak to your future husband?”
Her hand tightened into fists as she restrained herself from stupidly attacking the man behind her,” Bite me, you leech.”
He quickly spun her around shoving her against a tree, with his hand still around her neck she was forced to stare into his dark eyes through his black masquerade mask.
“I did not know you were so eager for me to mark you,” his words filled with venom,” have some patience my princess for your time will come soon,” he made a point to brush her pulsing vein with his lips causing a shiver to run down her spine,” I assure you that when I do, I will make sure you enjoy it just as much or maybe even more than I do. When I am done with you, I will have you on your hands and knees begging for it.”
Calypso would have thought she was dead if not for how hard her heart was beating. She knew this was a dream but in this moment, she could not separate her imagination from reality.
" I did not take you for a delusional twit, King.”
His hand tightened slightly around her neck at her insult and a dark, humorless laugh passed his lips tickling her neck,” Until we meet again, my love.”
He disappeared just as quickly as he had appeared leaving her shivering alone in the dark.
