40. Pure Light

I don't think I had ever felt the peace that settled in my heart when I opened my eyes and sawKonstantin lying next to me. After everything I went through at the hands of Stefan, he still saw meas his mate and had to rescue me. I know I'm tainted goods, but the look in Konstantin's eyes whenhe sees me says different.

To think, only a few hours prior, I was ready to die alongside my child; now, both of us have beengiven a second chance. I'm not letting anything happen to my children or me, not after what I havebeen through.

Konstantin stirs and breathes out a sigh. I don't know why, but this little action makes me smile, so Idraw my hand to his face and cup his cheek. How am I so lucky to be here again? Laying next to mymate and our children feels like I have died and gone to heaven. Or perhaps I am still chained up inStefan’s dungeon, and this is all a dream?

I wouldn't put that cruelty past someone like him.

“Hey, why are you crying?” I snap out of my thoughts when I hear Konstantin’s voice and blink. Tearsran down my face, tears I didn't even know I was busy shedding

“I... don't know. Laying next to you just feels so... surreal, I guess? I can't help but wonder if this isn'tall a dream Stefan is making me suffer, and when I wake up again, you'll be gone, and I'll be back onthose chains.” I say with a sad smile on my face.

Konstantin gets up, walks around to my side of the bed, and sits down, then he pulls me out of bedand plants me on his lap with my legs on either side of him.

“Lily,” he starts, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist. “This is all real; rest assured. I am neverletting you out of my sight again, not after I lost you in the cruellest way.”

He cups my face in both of his hands when I start to sob and makes me look at him. “This is real,you're here with our children and me, and I love all of you so much that I would kill anyone whowould dare touch you with the intention of doing you harm. You're mine, you're my mate, and I loveyou so fucking much.”

When I nod, he looks intently into my eyes and draws his face closer to mine, wrapping his hands inmy hair at the back of my head. Our lips meet, and everything else falls away, every doubt that thiscould be real, every misunderstanding and feeling of being a tainted soul.

Konstantin's tongue traces mine, and I can taste the remnants of whiskey, our kiss starting soft butincreasing in intensity when I can feel myself scenting him. This... has never happened beforebecause I am scentless, and my heartbeat quickens when he scents me as well. He pulls me closer tohim, digging his hands into my hips, and I can feel the outline of his cock against my sex.

“Lily,” he whispers through our frenzied kiss, and this is when I realise that we haven't kissed sincehe claimed me in the woods behind this estate. Then he breaks off the kiss so abruptly that I open my eyes and blink a few times - then I feel thatpull in my chest when I look at him.

He holds up his hand as I am about to protest and gives me a sad smile. “I know you're going to saythat you've healed, but that's not what I mean. You need time, Lily and I will not be the one to takeadvantage of your need to be held right now.”

I didn't want to cry. I didn't want to admit to him or myself that I needed time or that I felt weak andabused; not after he trained me to be stronger than I am.

But the tears falling down my face right now proves that this is just what I needed to hear fromsomeone. I am weak. I was taken advantage of and abused - and I am fucking angry.

The soft crying eventually turns to heart-wrenching sobs, but all I feel is Konstantin's arms aroundme as he comforts me with his soft words.

I'm strong, I am a warrior... but I got taken advantage of when I was weak and turned into a sexslave for a demon who only cared about producing some sort of demonic spawn. He drew me tohim by using the demonic side of me that I didn’t know existed and kept me chained up.

I don't know how long I cried for, but when I opened my eyes again, I was wrapped up in bed, andKonstantin was nowhere to be found. Huh, I must have cried myself to sleep.

Putting pillows on either side of the twins, I wrapped the nightgown Caterina gave me around mybody and plodded barefoot downstairs. The house is quiet, but I can hear voices as I get downstairsand near the kitchen.

"... yes, asshole, she’s safe and here with the twins. Yes, fucking twins, you're an uncle now, socongratulations.” It was Konstantin, and he was on the phone. “She's here now; wanna talk to her?”My eyes widen when he says this, and I realise that he must have caught my scent when I camedownstairs. He turns around and gives me one of those smiles that get my heart beating every timeand hands the phone over to me. “It's Fenriz,” he says.

I swallow hard and nod before taking the phone from him, remembering the lies that womanspewed about my family in Vegas. I'll question him about it someday, but not right now.

"Hey, Fenriz,”

I hear a sharp intake of breath on the other side, then a long sigh. “Lilith,” he says softly before myheart drops at the sound of him sobbing. “You're safe.”

Yet again, I feel tears stream down my cheeks after I thought I was all cried out. “Yes,” I croak out, “Iam."

“That's good, that's so good to hear,” he says, sniffing. “I tried to help; I wanted to be at Konstantin'sside as he looked for you, but Father has-"

I hear a female voice on the other side speaking a different language before Fenriz responds to her.What? Who was that? My eyebrows shoot up when I realise what he was about to say.

“Another one?” I ask.

Fenriz sighs. “Yes, but this one... it's different-"

“Do you really believe that, Fenriz?" I scoff and shake my head. “She'll end up the same as the othersand make your heart harden even more-"

"She's my mate, Lilith.”

What he says stops me cold and makes me worry about the poor girl even more. “She's my mate.”"Oh..." I answer, not sure what else to say to this. If this woman is genuinely his mate, will his beastbe sated?

"Yeah... but I didn't call to speak about me. I've missed you, and you have no idea how happy I amto hear your voice after all this time. Konstantin is a good man, and he will take care of you. Well, hehas no choice, or I will come to New York and rip out his heart.”

“Fuck you, Lycan,” Konstantin quips while he’s making coffee, and I can't help but let out a giggle atthis. He turns around when I do, and that look on his face causes my heart to squeeze.

Fenriz chuckles. “I'll see you soon; please hand the phone over to your mate.”

I don't know what else to say, so I do as I am told.

“Yeah...” He and Konstantin continue to chat, and I walk over to him and wrap my arms around hiswaist.

My older brother has changed, I can hear it in his voice, and I can't help but wonder if it's becausehe found his mate. If that is the case, then I am happy for him. Even a beast deserves happiness if allhe's ever known is death and pain caused by his own hands.

Konstantin puts his cell phone on the table and reciprocates my embrace. “Fenriz will be here onFriday; he'll be coming for the Children’s Blessing and swearing you back into the pack,” he says.“Children’s Blessing?” I ask, looking up at him with a frown, and he nods.

“Volkov newborns get sworn into the pack, similar to when we do a Claiming Ritual or burial pyre.It's a short ceremony conducted by the High Priestess, and with Marle, you can bet your ass that theceremony will be something to look forward to.” He says with a chuckle.

I don't ask who Marle is, but I rest my head on his chest again and breathe out a sigh. “Thank youfor coming for me, Konstantin.”

I feel him stiffen and kiss my head. “I would do it over again if I had to. You and the kids are themost important thing to me right now, and I will kill anyone who threatens that happiness.” He says.“Easy now,” I chuckle and look up at him. “We're not going anywhere ever again.”

“Damn right, you're not.” He says, then gives me another one of those kisses that had me weak atthe knees.

"Please, there are kids here,” I feel him smile against my lips when I hear Kai behind us. We turnaround, and the Alpha walks towards us, then grabs an empty coffee cup.

“Good morning to you too, asshole,” Konstantin says and takes our coffees from the counter beforewalking towards the kitchen island

Kai chuckles and turns to face us. “Hey, you named your daughter after this asshole, so watch it.” Hesays and raises his cup to his mouth, looking as smug as anything.

Konstantin scoffs. “Ha, that's not set in stone yet,” he says, but he knows more than anything thatKaia has already been decided, especially after what Caterina told me Kai did last night.

Kai only smirks. “Have you decided on a name for the boy yet?”

I have to admit that I haven't even thought of a name for our son. In fact, our daughter wouldn'teven be named if it weren't for Caterina’ vision last night. During my imprisonment, choosing aname was the last thing on my mind because it would mean that I was attached to the child Stefansaid would die. I didn't want that attachment knowing he wouldn't even live.

But things are different now, I suppose.

I like the name Luka; it means bringer of light, and I think we can use that right about now,”Konstantin speaks up.

“Luka and Kaia,” I murmur, loving how the names sounded together. “Pure and light; I think that'sexactly what they are.”

Konstantin kisses my forehead when I say this, and I hear Kai chuckle on the other side of thekitchen. “A woman will lead the next generation of Volkov warriors; I can’t wait to see what's in storefor them.” He says, then walks out of the kitchen with two cups of coffee.
