Nate

We walked into the apartment early in the afternoon, we got some KFC hoping to cheer Axel up, since he’d been quiet the whole time, we’d bought his favourite sandwich with the toy, but Axel had refused to eat, without saying a word, He shook his head and hid his face in Maya’s neck.

He didn’t even want to sit in his car seat. As soon as we tried to put him in, he began to tremble and hold Maya tightly, who, with eyes full of tears, had kept him all the time sitting on her lap.

At that moment we were returning to the apartment. Maya laid Axel on the ground, kneeling in front of him and taking off his denim jacket while I locked the door.

I heard Maya snort air and then watch Axel.

“Why didn’t you tell me you got dirty?” she asked softly.

Axel lowered his head and shook it, not saying a word. Maya looked at me, her eyes shining, unable to do anything. I took off my jacket and pulled down, squatting next to Axel while Maya got up and went into the kitchen.

“Hey buddy, how about taking a bath with dad?” I asked him, stroking his blonde head.

Axel snapped his head up and looked at me, his blue eyes immediately filled with tears and nodded.

“Daddy,” he said, “Axel go no more?” he asked.

“Axel will always be with us,” I said, lifting him.

“Always” Axel repeated, staring me in the eye.

I nodded and I gave him a sweet smile “Axel give a k**s to Dad?” I asked him.

Axel grabbed my face with his hands and printed me a k**s with his lips sounding. I put him under my arm and together we walked to his room, while I pretended to make him fall to make him laugh. Axel started laughing cheerfully and I finally felt my heart beating back in my chest.

I walked into Axel’s room and I found Maya, I didn’t know where she had been, she was making Axel’s clothes and stacking them together with his towel with dinosaurs.

I laid Axel on the changing table and undressed him, changing his diaper dirty, dirty, and undressing. Every once in a while I would bend over and k**s him on the belly and give him a raspberry, making him laugh cheerfully, while he put his hands in my black hair, pushing me to make him laugh even more.

Maya walked behind me and stopped next to us, and I froze and looked at her like Axel did. Maya’s eyes were shiny and she kept her eyes on Axel.

“Axel good, Mommy?” he asked, looking at her and stretching his hands towards her.

“Axel is perfect,” Maya said, leaning over him and kissing him on the mouth.

Axel laughed happily and grabbed her face with his hands and then looked her straight in the eye. “Love you mommy” he said seriously.

“And I love you,” she said, kissing him on the nose, “Do you want to bath with me?” she asked hopefully.

“No! Daddy Bath!” Axel yelled, pushing Maya’s head away, laughing.

I picked him up and held him upside down, making him laugh while Maya rolled her eyes.

“Eat something,” I told her as we left Axel’s room.

“I’ve already eaten,” she sighed.

“Maya,” I began, “You haven’t eaten in days,” I said.

“I know, I’m sorry,” she said, blocking herself.

I bent down and gave her a k**s on the lips, sweet and delicate “No more dishonesty okay?” I said rubbing my nose against hers.

Maya nodded and went into the kitchen, I picked up Axel, and before Maya completely disappeared, I slapped her on the butt and made her laugh.

I went into the bathroom and started filling up the tub while I was putting Axel down and undressing. Axel took all his toys and started putting them in the tank, almost filling it up while he was babbling on and on.

I changed while Nate and Axel were in the bathroom. I put on more comfy shorts and a Nate shirt. Looking at myself in the mirror I noticed that my belly had grown still, in the last few days I hadn’t noticed, I hadn’t thought about the baby at all, and that was bad.

I took Nate’s phone and looked for the number of the gynaecologist, I called her to make an appointment, I wanted to make sure the baby girl was okay after my shortcomings of the last few days.

I went to the fridge and I took what I needed to make a sandwich while I called the gynaecologist.

I made an appointment and continued to prepare some sandwiches, even Axel needed to eat since at lunch he had not wanted anything.

After preparing everything, I left the sandwiches on the table and sat on the sofa while eating and zapping on the TV. After some time, the bathroom door opened and a Nate came out with a towel around his pelvis and an Axel completely went on his lap. I got up immediately and walked toward them.

“He collapsed while I was washing him, he must be destroyed,” Nate said.

I took Axel in my arms and gave him a k**s and then went to his room and put him on his bed. Nate got him to put on a shirt and a diaper. I rocked him gently and put him down, and then I took the pacifier and put it in his mouth.

I watched my baby sleep peacefully for a while, then sighed and went to the room where I found Nate with only pants on, lying on the couch while looking at the ceiling.

“I feel endless fatigue, I just want to rest and not see anyone for at least a year,” he said as I sat astride him.

I put my hands crossed on his chest and put my chin on it as I tried to look closely at him.

“Me too,” I said in a sigh, “For the next few days, I don’t want to see anyone, not even my own. I need some time with my baby, peace and quiet,” I said, resting my cheek on my joined hands and closing my eyes.

Nate put his hands over my face and moved my hair behind my ear, “Did you eat?” he asked.

I nodded and sighed again, “I made some sandwiches, they’re on the table,” I said.

“There’s meat in the fridge, we’ll eat that tonight,” he said.

“I booked an appointment with the gynaecologist, I want to do a check seen after the last few days,” I said, kissing him on the chest.

“Good,” he said.

I raised my head and approached his alley, before joining my lips with his in a sweet k**s. Our lips danced together, sinuously. Our tongues met and began to gently collide.

I tried to imprint in that k**s all the love I had for him, I stuck my fingers in his hair and smeared more on him, while Nate surrounded me with his arms and held me tight.

We stopped our k**s and I put my forehead on his, deeply inhaling his perfume. I settled better, lying on my side above him, my back resting on the back of the sofa. I caressed my belly gently, the roundness was now visible from the shirt, while I watched lost the TV.

I heard Nate lift my shirt and put his hand on my belly.

“Is she moving yet?” he immediately asked.

“It’s still too early,” I said, looking at him.

Nate seemed disappointed but then shook his head and walked over to give me a k**s on the cheek.

I laughed and leaned against him. Our calm and tranquillity was completely broken by the desperate cry I had never heard.

I looked up, and Nate immediately stood up and rushed to the room where the scream was getting louder and louder.
