Chapter 29

“Mr. Xander… This is against the school rules and regulations, but I will do it because it’s you,” The proprietress hesitated when Xander showed up and

asked to have lunch with Jack and Jake.

“Thank you so much, Mrs. Lewis. I will forever be grateful for this favor,”

This

way, Sir,” She led the way while he trailed behind her. This was a difficult decision to make, which he was of course sure would p iss Summer off if she ever found out he did this, but he just wanted to spend some time with those kids and get to know them. He was almost very sure that they were his kids even though he had no right to claim they are.

“Wait here, Sir. I will call them out for you,”

“Thank you,

Mrs. Lewis walked into the class where there were a few students sitting on their seats and having lunch. Jake and Jack were seated at the far end of the class, snacking away while talking and laughing.

“How are you, kiddies? Hope you are having a good time here?” Mrs Lewis asked with a sweet smile on her face, getting the attention of the kids who all tumed to her.

“Yes, ma’am,”

“Good. Enjoy your food, and stay focused on your studies. Remember you need to make your parents, myself, your teachers, and of course, the whole school proud, ok?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Came the students voice in unison.

“Jake and Jack. Someone is here to see you. Can you come out, please?” She walked over to them with a polite smile on her face.

“Is Mommy here?” Jake’s face brightened with hope and an excited smile as she looked at the woman who was squatting beside them.

“It’s not Mommy, boys. Why don’t you come out, hmm?” She reached out her hands to touch their heads, but they flinched.

“Sorry, but Mommy said we can’t relate with strangers,” Jack spoke up.

“Not entirely a stranger. It’s me, boys. Mind having lunch with me at the school cafeteria? I don’t mind if you want us to do it here,” Xander finally walked inside and squatted beside them with a sweet and passionate smile on his face.

“Mr. Xander? It’s you?” Jake couldn’t help the smile that formed on his lips as he looked at Xander,

“Why are you here? Ella is not in school today.” Jack raised his eyebrows innocently.

“Of course, I know. I came because of you two, not Ella. So, are you coming with me?” He ruffled Jack’s hair and smiled.

“But Mom said we can’t…

“We will have lunch with you. Let’s go, Jake chipped in as he stood up the small chair and grabbed Jack’s hand.

“Mom said bad guys. Mr. Xander doesn’t look like one. Let’s go with him and have lunch. I’ve been wanting to chat with an older man while eating, Come

on. There’s no harm in doing this,” Jake leaned forward and whispered to his brother.

“Are you sure about this? What if Mommy gets mad at us?” Jack whispered.

“Let’s

about worry

that later. Come on,” Jake nudged his arm, and he slowly nodded.

“Let’s go, Mr. Xander,” Jake turned to Xander with an excited smile on his face.

“Do you n

i mina holding hands?” Xander held out his hands to them, and they took it.

Tknow the way to the school cafeteria. Let’s go,” Jake pulled him as they all walked out of the class.

They arrived at the cafeteria a few minutes later, ordered food, and started eating.

“Do you like it?” Xander couldn’t hide his excitement as he watched them eat carefully. He was proud of everything about the boys. Summer did a good job raising them..

“Hmm… It’s delicious. It’s been a while since we last eat at the cafeteria. Mommy always packs food for us,” Jake smiled after he drank from the juice he was offered.

“Really? Do you want to do this often? I can always make out time to have lunch with you in school if you don’t mind,” Xander shrugged.

“Really? You will really do that? Of course, we would love that. Right, Jack?” Jake nudged Jack’s arm.

“Hmm,” Jack nodded briefly and continued eating.

“Are you ok, Jack? Don’t you like it here? You don’t like the food? I can buy another one for you,” Xander spoke worriedly as he touched Jack’s head.

“Don’t worry about him. He’s…”

“You should allow him speak for himself, Jake,” Xander spoke to Jake gently then turned to Jack.

“Are you ok?”

“Hmm… I’m fine,” Jack nodded.

“Mommy might get mad at us if she replaces out about this later,” He added thoughtfully.

Xander couldn’t help but feel bad, and for a moment, he wondered if he had just messed up. It wasn’t about him this time, but the innocent kids.

“I will defend you if Mommy gets angry. I told you not to worry. Just enjoy your food,” Jake assured his brother as he patted his hair gently.

“Hmm,” Jack smiled and continued eating

The way they cared so much about each other, the way they were scared of their Mom and everything, he could only be grateful that they were raised by a good woman who gave birth to them.

“Why is Ella not in school today, by the way?” Jack asked out of the blue moon.

“Oh… It’s not something serious. She was down with fever and had to stay back at home today,” He smiled.

“Oh,”

“Uhm… Can I ask of a favor, please?” He asked, and they glanced at each other before nodding.

“It’s about Ella. I know she can be annoying, but trust me, she’s a really sweet girl if you get to know her. Can you please be nice to her and be her

friend?”

“Don’t worry, I will take care of things from my end and make sure she’s not rude to you. Can you please be her friends?” He added, and they nodded.

“We will try,” Jake assured him, and he smiled.

“What about you, Jack? Will you?” He turned to Jack and raised his eyebrows.

“Ella is rude, but we will try. We are not assuring you, but we will try,” Jack hesitantly stated.

“Thank you, boys,”

“Mom is taking us out later this weekend. Will you come with us? You can bring Ella,” Jake beamed with smiles, but Jack quickly nudged his arm.

“What are you saying? Mommy won’t like that,”

“Relax, Jack. I can handle it,” Jake smiled, then turned to Xander.

“So, will you come with us?” Jake further asked, and Xander sighed.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be possible, but time will tell,”

Jake nodded disappointedly.

“It’s fine if you can’t come with us. You can come over to the school and have lunch with us along with Ella if she doesn’t mind,” Jack suggested.

“Yes, that’s right. You don’t have to go out with us if you can’t. You can always meet us in school,” Jake added with a smile.

“I will do that,” He nodded.

The sound of Xander’s ringing phone disrupted them.

“Excuse me, please,” He took out the phone from his pocket, and ‘Henry’ was displayed on the screen. His heart missed a beat and he swallowed nothing. His hand shook slightly as he managed to swipe the answer button. He tried to stay focus as he held the phone to hirear, but the many thoughts going on in his mind wouldn’t let him. Did something happen to his Mom? Did she pass away? That was the last thing he wanted.

“He…nry?” His voice came out weakly.

“Congratulations, man. Your Mom woke up. There was a new imported injection given to her, and it acted faster than we expected,” It felt like his breath was released to him the moment he heard that, because he breathed out with his eyes closed.

“Thank you so much. I’ll be there shortly. I’ll come see you when I come over to the hospital,”

“Sure,” The call ended, and he breathed out again.

“Are you ok?” Jake asked worriedly, and he smiled.

“Yes, I’m fine,” He nodded.

“The lunch break is over. We need to head back to class,” Jack stated.

“Yes. We need to head back to class,” Jake added.

“Sure. I will take you back to class,”

Xander left for the parking lot after he dropped them in their class. He was about to start the car when his phone started to ring.

“Speak,” He spoke on the phone as soon as he swiped the answer button.

“Doctor Spencer is coming back today, Sir. I booked an appointment with him, and you should be able to see him tomorrow,” Nick’s voice came on.

“Alright. I have to go now,” He ended the call, then tossed the phone on the seat beside him, and drove off, heading to the hospital…
