Chapter 70

Summer Frost

I stopped on my tick alighted from the car and saw Hunter standing. What the f**k was he doing at my apartment?

1thought he was going to leave immediately upon seeing that I was with Xander, but he came to me instead.

“Are you okay?” He tried to touch my check, but just before his hand could reach me, Xander came out of nowhere and grabbed him.

They glared at each other, giving me this awkward feeling.

“I think you should leave,” I rushed my words. I knew I was being unfair to Hunter. He has been by my side for years, he was there for me even at my lowest, but then, that shouldn’t be enough reason for me to consider being with him when I felt nothing for him, right? Love happens naturally. It’s not something anyone can force. It just happens. Maybe if the heart could choose whom it want to love, who knows, maybe I would’ve considered giving Hunter a chance because he has really tried enough for me.

“Can we talk, please, Summer?” I paused and bit my lip.

“She just told you to leave. Didn’t you hear her?” Xander’s voice came on, and I scoffed.

“Then do you think you have the right to be here?” I turned to Xander and snapped at him.

“Huh?” He blinked his eyes.

“You two should leave,” I headed toward the gate afterwards. I was hoping to get a good rest and clear my head. If I knew I was going to be met with this scenario as soon as I got home, then I would not have considered going back home now. Maybe lodging at a hotel would’ve done me good.

“Tell me what to do, Summer,” Hunter’s broken voice pierced through my heart, seading waves of guilt down my spine.

“Tell me how to stop loving you,” His voice came again, and I slowly balled my fist, gazing into space.

“Even if you don’t feel the same way for me, can you at least try to see how much I love you? Can you at least understand that I’m also hurting?” His voice was filled with so much emotions as he spoke.

“Just tell me what to do, and I promise to do it. What is he doing right that I’m not doing? Just name it, and I promise to do it if that’s the only way I can win your heart,”

“Hunter-

“Why? Why does it have to be him even after years? Why is he still the one your heart chooses? Why can’t it be me for just a second. Am I that bad?”

His reddened eyes gazed into mine as I’ve turned to him. Pain was written all over him.

My attention was drawn to Xander who was just staring speechlessly, and I asked myself the same question Hunter had asked me a few seconds ago. Why was it still him after so many years? Why could I not open my heart to another man after everything? It could be someone else even if it was not Hunter, right?

Even after all the questions, the only answer I could come up with was ‘I’m just a fool for love, I was no different from Hunter. Going back to the man who hurt me so badly even though it was partially never his fault, was no different from Hunter’s situation of being in an unrequited love.

“Can you just-

“Stay out of this. I will handle it,” I cut Xander off, then walked up to Hunter and sighed.

“Why don’t you leave, Hunter? We can talk about this some other time, you know? I’m not in a very bright mood,” I tried to calm him, but he scoffed.

“You know… I’m just curious about something.” Hunter’s eyes were filled with tears he was probably trying to hold back but failed, as they gazed into

mine.

“Will you keep going back to him even after our engagement? Will you keep seeing him even after we are together? Is this how it’s always going to be?” Tears finally dropped from his eyes, and I would be a d a m n liar if I said his questions didn’t hit a spot in my heart. Will I ever be able to stop seeing Xander? Yes, that’ll make me a cheater, but will I ever be able to stop? Will this burning desire I have for him ever leave me?

“Hunter…” My voice trailed off as I had no words to say to him. I watched as he turned to Xander and scoffed.

“We are getting engaged soon. Will you keep bothering her even after that?” Hunter chuckled painfully.

“And who said that the engagement is ever going to happen?” Xander’s lips twitched into a smirk as he uttered confidently, his eyes gazing into Hunter’s as though he already had a whole lot of plans for this.

Xander covered the space between them and whispered something into Hunter’s ear. I had no idea what it was that he told Hunter, but the look on Hunter’s face confirmed that it was something annoying

Xander stepped away from him then patted his shoulder and finally turned to me with a smile on his face.

“You should go get some rest. I need to take care of something at the office, so I will go ahead first,” He waved at me then glared briefly at Hunter before he went to hop inside his car.

I watched him drive off until his car was out of my sight.

“I’ll head inside first,” I turned to leave after I said to Hunter.

“I’m sorry about what happened. I came to apologize for that,” By the time I looked back at him, he was already headed to his car. He hopped inside and

drove off.

“That was…”I paused and exhaled deeply before I made my way into my apartment…
