Bree’s hand trembled as she held mine. She then scolded, “That bastard! I’ll call him right now andask what exactly he’s trying to do. Didn’t he say there was nothing between him and that Masseywoman?”

She finally let go of my hand and reached for her phone. I moved my hand, which had gone numbfrom her grip. I then said, “Bree, I’ve already talked to him at the company. He’s agreed to break up.And…”

I paused and then continued, “He’s also accepted Jewel to work at the company.” No matter how Isaid it, today’s words sounded like complaints. Since it was like that, I decided to be forthright andtell them everything Christ

had done.

“What?” Bree and Zack were stunned.

Zack’s face darkened, and Bree questioned him, “Didn’t you say you had control over everything atthe company? How did you not know about this?”

It was just as I had thought. Zack sat at home, fully aware of the company’s affairs. But the comingsand goings of an individual at the company weren’t something that he, as the chairman, wouldmonitor closely.

Zack didn’t respond. His eyes showed evident anger. Seeing this, Bree said, Call Chris back andask him what’s going on.”

I stopped them. Chris coming back would only make things messier.

“Bree, Zack, if you replace this unacceptable, imagine how I feel. He had a scandal with Jewel and yet,he brought her to the company. He didn’t care about me as

his fiancée.

“Maddie, we’ll make him get rid of that woman.” Bree grabbed my hand again.

“Bree, he blocked all contact with Jewel in front of me. It was the day before. we were supposed toregister for our marriage. But that didn’t stop him from accompanying her to a prenatal check–upthe next day.

“So, getting rid of Jewel doesn’t solve the problem…” I said, pressing my lips together.

“The real issue is that Chris cares about her. For her, he can lie and disregard

My words left Bree and Zack speechless. I continued to speak my mind. “Zack, Bree, thingsbetween Chris and me have come to this. Even if you force him to be with me, his heart isn’t here.

A loveless marriage would only bring me pain. If you truly care for me, you wouldn’t want me tosuffer in such a relationship, right?”

“Maddie…” Bree’s eyes welled up.

“Maybe Chris… is just confused. Can’t you give him another chance. Wait a little longer, and let himreflect on his actions?”

“What’s the use of waiting?” Zack’s voice turned stern.

“It’s his fault for failing Maddie. Why should she wait for him?” Zack’s words genuinely felt like hewas treating me as his daughter. I felt touched.

“Maddie, if Chris doesn’t appreciate you, don’t give him another chance. You deserve to replacesomeone better. If you don’t have anyone suitable, I can introduce you to some fine young men.Zack’s words became more protective -like a real father standing up for his daughter.

However, Bree got anxious and glared at him. “What are you talking about? Only Maddie can bemy daughter–in–law. I won’t let her marry anyone else.”

What started as a sorrowful conversation turned into a lively one due to their banter.

“Are you planning on having another son? Zack humorously added.

Before Bree could respond, a familiar voice came from the door. “I think that’s a good idea.”

I looked up and saw Conrad standing in the doorway backlit. He was dressed in casual clothing andpulled a suitcase.

His eyes were fixed on me, sprinkling with bright light.
