Chapter 17
A Rag Picker?
Violet POV
The whole day passed like a whirlwind. Martha was pretty upset about the decision that they would make me the Director, because she was expecting it, but she realized that since the management was going in someone else’s hands, she really didn’t have a choice. I had gone to her cube and said that things would never change between us, hoping that she wouldn’t resign out of animosity. It turned out that she was secretly happier that I was taking over. With Jayden, she was feeling stifled.
Jayden came to me demanding that I resign because he wanted me to move in with him. Violet, I’ve become incredibly rich! I am a multi- millionaire. Taking care of both Dave and you is something I can easily do.
I sighed. “I know, Jayden, but you know I am not interested. You have to understand that I have worked very hard for this and I don’t want to leave.”
Jayden gritted his teeth. “I want us to go forward in this relationship, Violet. I won’t stop pursuing you and you know that.”
I got up, circled my table, and hugged him. “You are a wonderful man, Jay. I hope you get a suitable partner who responds to your feelings. Why are you wasting your time with me?”

He hugged me back tightly. “I enjoy wasting time with you. Tonight, I am coming over to your place and we will go out for dinner.”
I chuckled. After Jayden left, I focused on the job at hand. All the models under me sent their congratulatory messages. Tessa came

running in, squealing about my promotion. She was the most. boisterous one with plenty of time at hand. I really had to replace a way to get her busy.

I reached home at 8 PM and as I parked my car in the garage, I couldn’t help feeling like I was being watched. The hair on my n*eck rose, and I quickly went into the house.
“Mooommmyyy!” Dave came running to me and hugged my thighs. I picked him up and hugged him tightly, feeling better instantly.
“How was your day, little one?” I asked, ruffling his hair. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Mimzy rolling her eyes.
“I beat Jonny again,” he said, pursing his l*ps.
“What? Why?” Now I knew why Mimzy rolled her eyes.
He pouted. “It’s not my fault. He said that there are two men outside who are watching you and they want to marry you. So I punched him in his n*eck.”
“Whaaaatttt?” I was dumbstruck. “How is that any better?”
“I punched on the n*eck, not on his face,” he argued.
“You can’t do that! And no one is marrying me.” Gosh, my son’s protective instincts were kicking in faster than I had expected.
He pouted more, seething in anger. “Johnny can’t say such things.”
“Some rich dude has moved into the house opposite to ours. His people. are redecorating the house,” Mimzy explained.
“That manor?” I asked, amused. It was crazy expensive.
“Yep! And I am leaving,” Mimzy announced with a smile. “I have a

date.”
“OMG!” I squealed. “That’s so good, Mimzy. Tell me all the details once you are back.”
She laughed. “I will,” she said, picking up her bag.
After she left. I took Dave for a bath. “Sweetie.” I tried to reason with him. “You know mom can’t marry anyone you won’t like, so don’t go around hitting people.”
He crossed his arms across his chest with a frown as I deposited him in the bathtub. I shook my head, gave him some toys, and went to my bedroom to talk to the witch, Brenda. “Hi! Dave’s potion is due.
“Heyyyy Violet,” she chirped on the phone. “I know, and I have already prepared another. This time it is going to be stronger.”
“Thank you, Brenda.” I said. “I’ll come to pick it up soon.”
“Sure! I had to say one thing-” A doorbell sounded on the other side. “Can I call you back? I guess my date is here.”
“Oh, sure!” This was getting pretty surprising. So many dates. I chuckled and disconnected the call. As I walked into the bathroom, I saw Dave with his toy–ship that ran on water, making a whirring motion. He looked at me, smiled and narrated a ghost story that he heard in the school. I loved his stories. If he weren’t so aggressive and an alpha, I was sure he would become an author. After a nice bath, I wrapped him in a towel and took him out to his room. Just as I was about to make him wear pajamas, my doorbell rang. I sighed, sure that it was Mimzy. She was in a habit of leaving her room keys. As soon as I opened the door, my eyes widened. “Dane!” My eyes darted around. “What are you doing here?”
His eyes went to my shirt, which was wet over the breasts. My n*pples

puckered beneath his intense gaze and heat pooled in my belly. The mate attraction was kicking in. I swear I heard a rumble in his chest, but it was momentary. Then he looked at Dave. My arms curled around him protectively. Dane’s l*ps lifted. “How are you, Dave?”
Dave regarded him with suspicion. “I am well,” he said with a small
smile. That surprised the hell out of me. Dane never smiled at strangers.
Dane stifled his chuckle and addressed me. “I was hoping we could have dinner together.”
I blinked at him. “I–I am sorry,” I stuttered. Who the hell was he to come and ask me out for dinner? Wait, he was my new boss. But still. “I can’t go out at this time!” I said to dismiss him.
“Who said we are going out?” he stood at my door, not budging an inch. “We will have dinner here.”
My jaw dropped, and it wasn’t close to being collected as Dane walked into my house with a satisfied smile. I closed the door and rushed after him. “Dane, I have someone coming over tonight!” I said. “You have to leave.”
He spun towards me, his brows furrowed. “Well, I am hungry as hell. I was hoping to have dinner with you. If you like, I can help you.” He turned and started walking towards the kitchen.
I ran after him, but it was too late. He had taken out a bowl and eggs. I could feel a disaster coming. “Wait, I’ll fix something!” Gritting my teeth, I sat Dave on the table and snatched the utensils and eggs from him. “You can hand me over the vegetables from the fridge,” I growled as I started whisking eggs in the bowl.
He grinned. “Thanks Vi.”

“This has to be real quick!” I growled. “Please chop the spinach, parsley, and ginger.” There was no response. I turned my head, only to replace that no one was there. I hurried out to see Dave in Dane’s arms, in a deep conversation about ships and trains. They just walked away. Dave never stayed in the kitchen while I cooked, and now I know where this trait came from. My jaw dropped. Again. I sighed and went back to making dinner.
Twenty minutes later, when I was keeping the lasagna in the
microwave after adding noodles and cheese, the doorbell rang. “I’ll take it!” I shouted. I hurried out after setting the oven to 350 degrees F, but Dane had closed the door already, his jaw clenched. “Who was there?” I asked, wondering if that was Jayden.
“Some rag picker,” Dane replied nonchalantly, brushing his shirt as if removing dirt. “Is dinner ready?”
“It will be ready in ten minutes.” A rag picker? They never rang doorbells.
