MIA

I opened my eyes and instantly closed them again. Why do hospitals have blinding lights? Shouldn’t it be something more comfortable to the patient? I get the point that the doctor needs to be able to see everything well enough, but that’s why they have that focus light or something, right?

You know what, forget about the damn light, my body was fucking burning! My legs were on fire, my arms ached so much that I couldn’t even move. But my legs and chest that’s where the pain was almost unbearable. I opened my eyes again when I felt a light squeeze to my right hand, blinking a few times to adjust to the light.

I hadn’t noticed before that someone was there with me by my left. “It’s okay. Calm down, the doctor is on her way. The pain will go away soon, I promise.” he said softly. That’s when I heard my own whimpering and sobs. I tried my best to contain them, but the pain was too much. I felt his thumb doing soothing circles on my hand while he continued to whisper reassuring words. Who the fuck was this guy and why was he so touchy?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not against comforting or physical contact, but he was clearly a pack werewolf, and I did not trust them at all. Too many bad memories involved, like that little army trying to kill me! Wait. Was it his friends? Could it be a different wolf? Not likely. So, I concluded that the guy was probably insane or something. Yeah, that’s it.

I took a good look at him. Well, as good as my double vision and excruciating pain let me, anyway. He was tall with chocolate brown wavy hair. He had a little scar on his chiseled jaw and one above his right brow. Those blue eyes were so intense. The moment I saw the worry in them I felt like I could really trust this man, whoever he was. NO! I could not trust him! He tried to kill me. He killed Max!

I just wanted to be with Max and the others again. If that wasn’t an option, then just let me be and die in peace. Well, as peaceful as dying from immense pain was. But no, someone came running inside the room and the worst part? She had a giant needle in her hands! Fuck.

Ok, maybe it was not that big, and it did have a syringe attached to it. Still, I hated needles and didn’t want them anywhere near me. Dying or not. Fuck needles! I tried to move away and get me the hell out of there, but my limbs were too heavy and tired, so I barely moved. And nobody seemed to notice my distress, other than the freak that was trying to calm me down. She’s gonna poke me! I tried to warn her to stay away but all it came out was blabbering. I sounded like a drunk incoherent baby. Great. Just fucking great.

“She will be out again soon, Alpha. Maybe you should come back later.” the doctor said. I quickly moved my eyes to her face. She was tall as well, had blond hair and beautiful green eyes. She was the kind of pretty that makes you instantly assume she is a nice person. I didn’t like to assume anything, though. And since she was the one in possession of the fucking enormous needle, I already didn’t like her.

Someone huffed quite impatiently by my right side, and I moved my eyes to look at him. Huff to you too, mister! His chiseled jaw was clenched, his lips a thin unfriendly line. His perfect nose had its nostrils flared, like he was trying hard to smell something. His eyes. That’s what got me trapped. He had silver grey eyes, like the faint glow of the moon. It was beautiful and hypnotizing. His hair was dark brown and something about him made me think about the touchy creep dude.

My vision was getting blurrier by the second, but I couldn’t look any other way besides his eyes. I could see so many emotions there, but above all I could see frustration. Was he frustrated with me? Maybe he was frustrated that I was alive, or maybe just because he wanted to interrogate me right now and couldn’t. Whatever the reason, I tried to stare at him with as much defiance as I could muster.

Ok, I was fucking tired of that game of conscious-unconscious-conscious. Seriously, was I going to die or not? Why not just let me die already. Or if I was going to live, could I wake up only when I was ready to continue awake? Having no notion of time was unnerving. I hate it. I hate not knowing, whatever it was. But waking up screaming in pain was a horror movie. That’s what happened the last few times. I woke up screaming and Miss Pretty Doctor came running and gave me something again and I would go back to being unconscious for some time.

This time when I opened my eyes the lights were dim. My throat felt like a desert, my mouth was so dry that it felt glued. But on the bright side I wasn’t screaming due to excruciating pain this time. Yeay! One step at a time.

I looked around to try and replace some water, but when I tried to move to stand on my elbows, I felt a pressure on my forearms not allowing me to move properly. So, I fell, obviously. I huffed trying to get the hair out of my face. I looked down and saw that I was tied firmly to the bed. Quickly I looked at my legs. Idiot! My legs were covered with a hospital blanket. So, I tried desperately to move my legs and again I couldn’t. Damn, they must be tied down also. Just fucking awesome. It keeps getting better and better.

I felt tears start to run down my face. I felt a little better physically, I wasn’t sure I wanted to die anymore. Hell, I was twenty-six years old, I had much to live yet. I might not have my friends, but I still had my will. I had fought too much to run away from him and get a life, sort of a life. I had to keep going, replace out more about myself.

My sniffles must have woken the man sitting on the chair next to me. He jumped up startled and quickly grabbed my hand, trying to soothe me. That was the touchy guy from before. Great. Now my vision wasn’t bad so I could really see him. He was handsome and the scars on his face only made him more attractive. His blue eyes were like a deep ocean, and I got lost in them for a moment.

“Are you in pain? Do you need me to get the doctor?” he asked softly. I shook my head no; quite vigorously may I add. That made him smile and his smile was so contagious it almost made me smile back at him. But hey, I’m not smiling at a strange touchy werewolf guy. It might give him the wrong idea, like I wanted to be his friend. No, no, mister, hold your horses on that one. He kept smiling while searching my face. He probably noticed the turmoil of emotions spinning in my head. “Do you want some water?” he asked gently. What was the problem with this dude? Was he Mister Nice Guy?! He was weird for sure, but yes, I did want some water, so I nodded. He brought a plastic cup with a straw to my lips, and I sucked almost all the water at once. It hurt a little, but I needed it. “I’m Kyle, by the way.”

I just stared at him; I wasn’t going to say a word. He could be whoever, but he was helping me, so I gave him the smallest smile and nodded. His smile got bigger, showing me a roll of bright white teeth. He seemed genuinely happy to have helped. Okay. He seemed genuinely a nice guy. Still, I could not trust him. He was with him as far as I knew, so I also knew his nice attitude had an expiration date. I bit my lower lip hard as a way to remind myself to keep quiet.

“I’m gonna call you Red, it suits you.” He kept smiling down at me. What the hell. How can he smile for that long! Aren’t his muscles tired? And why did I seem to enjoy his smile and friendliness so much? It was something in his eyes, like I could know he wasn’t going to hurt me. Well, he wasn’t but what about the other guys? The dreamy silver eyes guy? He didn’t seem friendly at all. Even the pretty doctor seemed more friendly. “How are you feeling, Red?” he asked.

How am I feeling? Is this guy for real? I’m feeling stressed as shit, man. I don’t know where I am, I don’t know how many werewolves are around here. I don’t know where my beautiful and trusted knives are. The only thing I know is that Kyle can’t stop smiling, like a creep. A nice creep, yeah, but a creep, nonetheless. I shrugged and tried to lift my arm and huffed.

He had the audacity to laugh at me. Laugh at me! I narrowed my eyes shooting daggers at him. That was not funny. Being tied up to a bed in an unfamiliar and quite possibly hostile environment was not funny. Not by a long shot. I was being held captive for God’s sake. And he was laughing? Asshole. With a beautiful smile, but still an asshole. I huffed angrily and closed my eyes. I was going back to sleep, that’s how much his laughing annoyed me. I didn’t want to be the joke punchline, thank you very much.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. It’s just that you were so cute pouting like a five-year-old that I couldn’t hold it in.” he said, still chuckling a little bit.

I just huffed again and turned my head away from him. That was pretty much all I could do anyway.

“You are pouting again” he started to laugh again.

I used all my force to lift my hand again and give him the finger. Fuck this nice and handsome werewolf. I was not in a mood to be laughed at. I just wanted to go away.

“Wow, little feisty, aren’t we?” he chuckled again. “I guess it makes sense.” Kyle said pensively. Well, yeah, it makes sense your dumdum! I’m not a defenseless woman anymore or some shit like that. Max used to joke that sometimes I wasn’t a woman at all, considering the way I talked. I’m not very ladylike. I don’t want to be and even if I wanted, I wouldn’t know how to. Kyle cleared his throat and tried to look serious. “I’m sorry, Red, it was rude of me to laugh like that.”

Yeah, it was. I looked at him again and gestured to my hands one more time. This time he seemed to get the point across and untied my hands. Now I was grateful, my wrists itched like crazy. I quickly set up and untied my legs with a sigh of relief. I laid back again and stretched. I looked around the bed and found what I wanted. I turned on the button and adjusted the bed to a sitting position.

“If I knew you were going to smile like that, I would have untied you earlier.” Kyle said amused. I looked at him and was about to say something – even though I knew I shouldn’t – when the door to my room opened abruptly.
