Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire -
Chapter 384
After a long pause, he casually lifted his eyelids, casting a sidelong glance at Derick and asked with an unexpectedly sharp tone, "Derick, have you checked out these investigation results?"
The sudden question caught Derick off guard, sending a chill down his spine. He tried to keep his cool, responding in his usual professional manner, "Mr. Everett, you must be joking. I wouldn't dare invade your privacy."
Everett's gaze briefly scanned his face, as if the question was just a whim and he wasn't really interested in the answer. With a dismissive wave, he signaled Derick to leave.
It wasn't until Derick exited the office and shut the door behind him that his racing heart began to slow, and his forehead was covered in sweat. Even though he never underestimated his boss, he hadn't expected Everett to catch on to the medication issue so quickly! Luckily, the task was in his hands, and he could spin a story to cover things up. Otherwise, it would've been a real mess to handle!
Derick patted his chest, taking deep breaths to ease his nerves.
Back in the office, Everett reached out, his fingertips just brushing the leather pouch before pausing. After a few moments, he picked it up and opened it.
That night, Everett didn't come home. Selena sent a message, more for formality's sake, which went unanswered. She didn't mind; she had done her part as a wife. His absence was actually a relief.
During her trip to France, she bought gifts for Uncle Ricky, Joy, Grandpa, Ava, and even the bodyguards. She and Ava personally handed out the presents. It was partly to win some favor, just in case things got rocky in the future.
With Everett granting her freedom to come and go, Selena woke up feeling refreshed, hopped into a little red car from the garage, and headed to Brook's house.
Besides delivering the gifts, she clutched Uncle Ricky's hands, pleading with him not to gamble anymore. One day, she'd leave with her baby, and she wouldn't be able to watch over him or help him out.
Brook, as expected, swore up and down that he'd quit gambling and stay away from bad influences, promising not to cause her any more trouble.
But Selena knew her uncle too well;
he always meant well but was easily swayed by others. Fortunately, Ricky was graduating this year. Once he joined Porters Group and took
charge of finances, her unfe
wouldn't be able to make much of a mess.
She went to
hima's room, had a
a
serious chat with him, and handed him a bank card. "There's enough money here for you and Dad to live comfortably if you don't splurge. Ricky, I trust you more than Uncle with this."
Usually, Ricky would refuse, but today he just stared at the card for a while before closing his hand around it. The corners pressed into his palm, a little painfully. When he spoke, his voice was raspy, "Sis, are you leaving?"
Selena's throat tightened. This kid was sharp.
She raised her hand, as she always did, to tousle his hair, "Yeah."
She hesitated, then asked, "Will you blame me for leaving you all behind?"
"No." Ricky shook his head, cutting f you're unhappy with
her off. "Sis, if you're
Everett, then go. I'll take the money so you can have peace of mind, look after myself and Dad. We'll be waiting for you to come home."
Tears welled up in Selena's eyes. Ricky had truly grown up.
