Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire -
Chapter 96
Those who looked down on her still did, mocking her dreams, saying she'd never rise above her station. If Josh hadn't proposed the engagement, she and Everett would have been worlds apart, their paths never crossing. Even if they'd married out of convenience, would it have ended happily? Some things couldn't be forced; she had resisted this truth, but now she saw it clearly.
Grace ladled some soup and placed it near her. "And what else?" she asked.
Selena snapped back to reality, offering a faint smile. "Oh, nothing."
She took a sip from the bowl and noticed Callum's absence. "Grandma, where's Dr. Campbell?"
"Callum mentioned he needed to get back to work with his group, so he couldn't stay for dinner. He just left."
"That makes sense," Selena mused, knowing he was there with his medical team and couldn't be away too long.
Noticing Everett's absence, Grace asked, "Selena, where's your husband?"
"He's feeling a bit off. He's not used to the climate. Said he wasn't hungry and went to rest."
"Is it serious?"
"Not at all, Grandma. He's strong. Some water will do the trick. Let's enjoy our meal!"
With that, Selena called Marian over, "Marian, come on, join us. I'm determined to finish all this today!"
...
Stepping outside, Callum noticed a sleek black car parked by the curb. A tall figure leaned against it, cigarette in hand, the glowing tip stark against the night.
He paused, then approached. "Everett, you should cut back on smoking," he said gently.
Everett lazily lifted his eyelids, meeting Callum's gaze. Both men stood eye to eye, silently challenging each other.
Callum broke the silence. "If there's nothing else, I'll head out."
Everett flicked ash from his cigarette, his question sharp and direct. "Was this trip to the countryside just a coincidence, or do you have other motives?" Callum glanced away, recalling the scene under the streetlight where he and Selena stood, teased by the crowd about being a perfect match.
He turned back to Everett, his words measured. "It could be a coincidence, or maybe not."
A fierce glint appeared in Everett's eyes. "Callum, she's my wife now!"
Callum smiled softly, unaffected by Everett's warning, and gently reminded, "If you don't appreciate her, someone else will."
Then, he walked away, fading into the night.
After dinner, Selena stayed with Grace, chatting until it got late. Grace was either truly sleepy ochad
other intentions, but eventually sent her off to her husband.
Selena had hoped to avoid sharing a room with that insufferable man by staying with Grace, but her plans were dashed. She reluctantly returned to her room.
The dimly lit room revealed her

small bed, already occupied by Everett's tall silhouette lying with his back to her, exuding his usual unapproachable vibe.
Selena ignored him, quickly showered, and set up a makeshift bed on the floor.
Exhausted, she drifted off to sleep. With a soft click, she turned off the light, and Everett, who had been pretending to sleep, suddenly opened his eyes, which were filled with seething anger.
