Moon Child
Chapter 30

Kane stood, looking over to the hyena men. He had planned to attack Daemon from behind, knock the head from his shoulders. It had been a risky plan, and thanks to the men stepping in he didn't have to go through with it. He nodded in thanks.

“We grant you safe passage. Speak with Magdelynn, she will give you what you need for a few days journey.”

The man nodded a goodbye, taking his leave with the other shifter. Kane moved back to look down on their enemy once more. This monster was the maker of Dawn’s hell. A tormentor. He was going to pay, and it was a show he would thoroughly enjoy.

He had Benny and Ren drag him off to a ran down cabin in the woods. They hadn't used it in forever, and no one ever came out to it. Abandoned, dark and far away from society, he would suffer. Within decaying walls, built by the humans he despised, he would be locked into the traps and chained to the floor.

He would either bleed out or starve. Either way it would be a long, harsh death worthy of a monster of his caliber. No one knew how much he was enjoying this, except for Dawn of course. Perhaps he should hate himself, but he refused to. She deserved justice, and so did all of the victims of this piece of shit.

In the background Dawn followed behind the hyenas, heading back toward home. She felt Kane's desire to watch Daemon suffer, something she brushed off. Maybe too easily. Still, he deserved a torturous end, right?

"Wait!"

Her hands reached out, grabbing onto the younger man's hand. He frowned, stopping to look back at her. The older one stopped as well, eyes moving from her hands on his friend to those bright emerald eyes.

"How is she? The babies?"

The older one moved toward her, looking over her shoulder for a moment. Her hands had fallen away from the strangers hand, her heart skipping a beat at the feel of Kane's jealousy. Ok, no touching other men. Got it. She was trying so hard not to laugh at him though, but maybe not now? Nope, not a good time.

She was unsure what the shifter was doing. Was he looking over her at Kane? She knew her mate was watching them closely, obviously protective of her. Then, as if he had gotten the ok from her mate, he pulled her into a hug. Her surprise was evident as he moved back to give her space. It had only lasted a second, if that, but it made her soul lighter. With tears in his eyes he kept his voice calm.

"Because of you, she is alive and well. As are our children. For that I will always be in debt to you. Your people."

She smiled, a silent tear spilling from the corner of her eye.

"I'm pretty sure we're even now."

Her hand rested protectively over her belly and his knowing smile warmed her heart.

"If you ever need anything, sniff us out. We're not too far away."

She nodded, waving as they left. They were good people. Her pack was full of good people. She loved to admit that she was wrong, in this instance. Not all shifters were monsters, demons in the flesh of humans. It was just like humanity, a balance of good and evil.

"Dawn?"

Kane's hand claimed hers, his eyes bright as he looked down to her. She shrugged, wiping away the tear.

"I blame you. I've never cried this much until you decided to put a kid in me."

He raised an eyebrow, sweeping her off her feet as she laughed. With her hand on his bloodied chest he moved to claim her mouth as he spoke in a tempting tone.

"Want to start practicing for number two?"

Her laughter was odd in the scene they stood within, yet it was good. Behind her was the past, never to hurt her again. With her, holding her, was the present and the future. In Kane's arms she was willing to continue living. If just to see what tomorrow might bring. If only to feel him against her, loving her. His heart warmed her soul.

"You are my forever."

He smiled, their lips brushing.

"And always."

The sky filled with howls as they kissed, their smiles bright. This was her life now. Kane felt his soul fill with purpose, desire and passion. This woman; crazy and sweet and shy, was his. All his. Dawn felt whole. This man; stubborn and adorably protective and loving of her flaws, was hers. All hers. Forever and Always.
