Mountain Boss: Chapter 26
The wail almost has me tripping off the last step.
Catching my balance, I stand still, listening.
“What the fuck, World?” Courtney’s voice is clearer than it should be as she cusses out the planet.
That girl can flip from meek to crass in a second.
“Why?”
I narrow my eyes at hearing her again.
Stepping carefully, I turn the corner on the side of the cabin and see the culprit.
The open bathroom window.
I also see Fisher and Cook standing a few yards off with grins on their faces.
“Not cool. Not fucking cool.” Courtney’s tone is still angry, but there’s a hint of distress coming through that keeps my mouth in a flat line.
When the guys look like they might say something, I shake my head and point down the path, silently telling them to keep their mouths shut and to move on.
“Why?” Her voice is quieter, and I’m sure I’m the only one who can still hear her. “Why in front of him?”
Him.
Me.
The now familiar guilt pushes me back a step away from the window.
I’m her boss, I tell myself.
She doesn’t want to look incompetent at her new job, I try to reason.
She hates me and doesn’t want to show weakness to the enemy, I accept.
