Mountain Boss: Mountain Men Series Book One -
Mountain Boss: Chapter 32
I watch the brake lights disappear as Courtney maneuvers down the driveway.
I saw her look my way when she first found the clipboard.
She didn’t see me, didn’t notice the face in the kitchen window.
But I saw the way she smiled. And I saw her say something out loud over her shoulder, like she was talking to someone inside.
I also saw her walking back from the showers.
Her hair in damp braids.
The jeans she was wearing the first time I saw her back on and clinging to her ass.
I made sure to turn away before she got close.
Not needing to know how she smelled right out of the shower.
Not needing a scent memory to torment me alongside the regular memories of Courtney when I go to bed tonight.
Except…
I glance around, confirming no one else is nearby.
Except I need to know more about her.
I step off the driveway and onto the path leading toward the Laundry Cabin.
She’s my employee.
I’m responsible for her, whether I want to be or not.
And there’s something about her that says she needs help.
But I can’t help her until I understand her.
Which is what I keep telling myself as I approach the steps to her front door.
I stare at the knob for a long moment.
The fact that it’s not locked—because it doesn’t lock—makes me feel like an asshole, because even though no one here would do her harm, it’s the only building that doesn’t lock.
But that’s because we never needed it locked. No one is going to steal laundry. And the only time anyone sleeps in it is when they’re sick and the rest of the Bunk House doesn’t want to hear coughing all night.
It’s been months since anyone slept here, so it’s not like it’s contaminated. It’s just a convenient place to stash the female.
Also, the not locked detail serves to make this feel a little less like breaking and entering.
Plus, the cabin is mine.
I own it.
I own everything here.
So is it really trespassing…?
Before my conscience can remind me why this is wrong, and before any of the guys can catch me, I climb the steps in one stride and open the door.
