Chapter 157

Chapter 157 Nancy In Danger (1)

“They gave them to you, so they’re yours,” Nicholas insisted as he tried to hand over the jewelry box toNancy.

She stood her ground and refused to accept the jewelry. “These things don’t belong to me, so I won’ttake them,” she asserted. Given their divorced status, she felt she had no right to keep these items. She also remarked, “If your visit was solely for this purpose, then perhaps it’s best that you leave.”

Nicholas clenched his fists in disbelief and uttered with fiery intensity, “Are you telling me to leave?”

In response, Nancy sighed and suddenly burst into laughter, a bitter smile on her face. “I must be aglutton for punishment.”.

“You’re right. I shouldn’t have forced you since these things weren’t yours. Many women would gladlyaccept gifts from me, and there are plenty who want to be part of the Sallow Family. Why should I insiston you?” He concluded, “Very well. I’ll give these to them.”

The first person to cross Nancy’s mind was Madelline, and her face instantly drained of color. She hadto hold onto a nearby couch to prevent herself from collapsing. After a moment, she regained hercomposure and addressed Nicholas, “You’re right, Mr. Sallow. You have many admirers and womeneager to be with you. I’m a nobody; there’s no reason to mention me. Besides, you still have your loverin your heart. You actually wanted to divorce me back then, didn’t you? The only reason you dragged itout was your struggle to get over the hurdles in your heart for fear that you would disappointGrandpa’s. wishes. Well, isn’t this great news that you can go and propose to Madelline? You finallycan be together.”

He tightened his fists, and his eyes burned with anger. He ground his teeth and asked, “What are youtrying to say?”

Nancy responded, “Isn’t this what you wanted?”

Given that they were divorced, both were free to chart their courses in life. She understood that shehad no right to interfere in his choices.

“Heh…” Nicholas sneered, his expression turning cold. “All right then. Very well, Nancy, since this iswhat you want, I’ll grant your wish

Nancy began to protest, “When did I say this is what I-”

However, her words were abruptly cut short. The door slammed shut as Nicholas swiftly exited, disappearing from her sight like a fleeting gust of wind. He left, and his departure was even moredecisive than she had anticipated.

Hugging herself tightly, Nancy suddenly felt a cool breeze in the air, and her heart was filled withbitterness. She walked aimlessly, not knowing where she wanted to go; she simply wandered without aclear purpose.

She strolled along a lively street, where vibrant lights and pulsating music enveloped her senses. Atthis moment, she felt an unexpected release of pent-up tension, a lightening of her entire being. It wasas if a magnetic force drew her forward, guiding her to enter the inviting bar.

Inside the bar, the noise and music were deafening, and the place was crowded. This was. unusual forher, as she typically found such noisy environments unbearable. She wouldn’t have entered on aregular day, but today was different. She needed this place to unwind, allowing the music to occupy herthoughts completely, pushing aside any other concerns.

Upon replaceing a seat, a waiter approached Nancy and inquired about her drink preference. Cautiousabout her safety, she refrained from ordering alcohol and instead opted for a non-alcoholic beverage.

The “drink” she received was not only delicious but also artistically presented, accentuated by thesubtle lighting in the bar. She sipped it and finished her first drink rather quickly. Without much thought, she ordered another. However, as she reached her third drink, she began to feel that something wasamiss. Her head grew heavy, and dizziness washed over her. She couldn’t help but wonder, What’sgoing on? I haven’t had any alcohol; I’ve only been drinking a bit of this beverage. Why am I feeling sointoxicated?

Nancy held the cup, her steps swaying as she made her way to the bar and placed it on the counter. With a slight frown, she inquired, “Boss, did you serve the wrong drink? I ordered. a non-alcoholic one,but I’m feeling dizzy after drinking it. Can you please change it for

me?”

The boss quickly grasped the situation, noticing that Nancy had yet to finish her drink. This particularbeverage bore a name that resembled a soft drink, and its taste was deceptively similar, but it packed apotent punch. Observing her seemingly well-behaved demeanor, the boss surmised that she was likelya first-time visitor, unfamiliar with the establishment, and had accidentally chosen the wrong drink.

After receiving the explanation, Nancy nodded in apparent understanding. She retrieved her cup andreturned to her seat, where her dizziness seemed to intensify. Waves of lightheadedness washed overher in quick succession.

She rested her head on the table, hoping to wait until her dizziness subsided, allowing her to stand up.She reached for her phone, considering talking to someone. However, she ruled out her friend Linda, who was busy filming, and didn’t want to burden her further. Additionally, Linda was in a different city,so a conversation wouldn’t be of much help. either.

She also had two close friends from her school days. One was currently studying abroad, and the otherwas deep into a demanding internship, working long hours every day. She felt hesitant about disturbingthem in their busy lives.

Soon, Nancy’s finger paused on the name “Nicholas.” Given how decisively he had left during the day,she surmised he might be on a plane heading to see Madelline.

Finally, her gaze settled on the name “Christian.” Since their last parting, a substantial amount of timehad passed. She wondered about the progress of his mission and his safety. Thinking about this, shefelt a strong urge to reach out to him immediately. Her intoxicated state hindered her from typing a textmessage, so she decided to send him a voice message instead. “Christian. Hey, do you still rememberme? I’m Nancy. It’s been a while since we last spoke. How have you been? Did you return safely? I stillowe you a cup of coffee! Please let me know once you return safely!”

On the other side, Christian had just disembarked from his flight and was now in a car driven by Dylan, who had come to pick him up. His phone unexpectedly chimed with a new message, and he initiallyassumed it was from his sister or mother. To his astonishment, it was a message from Nancy.

Undeniably, Christian was excited, but he made an effort to temper his emotions. What took him bysurprise was that the message from Nancy was a voice message. Without hesitation, he played it.Although it started with customary greetings, Christian swiftly noticed something different-the tone ofher voice indicated she might have been drinking.

Sitting in the front passenger seat, Dylan couldn’t help but express his excitement. “Boss, isn’t that yourwife’s voice?”

Christian scolded him. “Stop talking nonsense.

“Boss, don’t be so humble. In my opinion, it’s time for you to settle down. Only when you’re married canwe have a chance!”

Ignoring Dylan’s comments, Christian quickly replied, “Where are you?”

As Nancy stared at the few words on her screen, her eyes widened. She had never expected him torespond. During their time apart, she had asked about the progress of his mission and whether therewere any dangers, but there had been no response. She had even started to think that he hadforgotten about her. Yet, today, he had actually replied.
