My Brother’s Mate
Chapter 55

Emily's POV

I follow Marcus up the stairs to the corridor to our rooms. I see Cyran kneeling beside my mom. I rush to her side. She is hunched over holding her chest. "Mom what's wrong?" I lay my hand on her back.

"My heart.. it hurts." She says. She winces in pain. This all reminds me of..

"Dad." I whisper. I notice Cyran look at me. Mom lets out a scream of pain as Cyran's attention is pulled back to her.

"It's the mate bond. This is what happened to me when I thought Liam had died." I say. How can I check on my dad? I felt Liam's hand on my shoulder. My mom collapses on the floor crying. Then she looses consciousness.

"Help me get her to the bed." Cyran says. He hooks his arm underneath her legs and under her back. He picks her up and I open her bedroom door. Cyran places her in the bed softly. I hold her head until it hits the pillow. I crawl in to the bed next to her and hold her hand.

"What can we do?" Liam asks.

"I don't think there's anything we can do." I say quietly looking at my mothers face.

"I will get a doctor, just in case." Hiroen says. I hadn't even noticed him.

"I will leave you. Please let me know if anything changes." Cyran says, as he slips out of the room. Liam and Marcus stay with me, quiet, as we wait for Hiroen to come back with a doctor. After a while of me holding my moms hand in silence, Hiroen comes back with a shorter older man with a large bag in his hands. He walks over to my moms side and places his bag on the chair next to it. He pulls out a stethoscope and listens to her heart.

"Hm." He says. He moves it and listens again. What does that mean?

"Hm." He pulls back and takes them off. He goes to his bag and pulls out a flashlight. He lifts up my moms eyelid and shines the light in her eyes.

"Hm."

"WHAT!?" I shout. I startle everyone in the room, including myself.

"Em." Liam says

"No, he's over here making noises but not saying anything."

"Maybe I could continue my examination with less of an audience." The doctor says.

"If you think I am leaving my mothers side, we will need another doctor."

"Emily. I'll stay with her. Just step out of the room for a moment. When it's over you can come back in." Hiroen says. I look at everyone and huff. I get up from the bed and storm out, Liam and Marcus follow me. As I stand in the corridor in front of my mother's room, I think back to my dad.

"Marcus, how can I replace out if my father is alive?" I ask. He thinks for a moment.

"We could use well water." He mutters to himself.

"What? Well water? What does that mean." I have no idea what he's talking about.

"Come on, I have an idea." Marcus says as he darts away.

I follow him down two sets of stairs down to the tunnels. But he takes the first tunnel which leads to a wide opening with a well in the middle.

"Well water. The minerals in the water can help you cast a spell. Basically you use the water like a clean crystal ball."

"Why don't we just us a crystal ball?" Liam asks.

"Because they're dirty. Crystal balls contort the image. They show you something different, something dark. Don't mess with those. Water is clean, it teems with life. It shows you the present unfiltered image." Hiroen's POV

As I watch the doctor complete his examination, I think back to my first memory of Angela. She was a baby, Elisa had her wrapped up on her chest as she was walking to the pack house. She only had little wisps of hair. She was a happy baby, from what I could tell. She loved to explore the woods, just like Emily does. She grew up to become a pretty strong wolf.

How lucky I am to have been able to watch my daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter all grow up. I think about my daughter Elisa. She had energy for days. I remember one time when she was about 6 or 7 she ran away from home. She had come to the woods with a bag and was building a house with sticks.

"What are you doing little wolf?" I asked her.

"I am building a house. I ran away from home." She says firmly. She wasn't scared or worried, just determined.

"And why would you do that!" I asked.

"Because there are too many rules. I can't follow them all." She says stacking sticks up against a log.

"But won't you be lonely out here?" I asked her.

"My pack is just right over there. And I won't have any rules."

"But won't you miss your mom, and your things?"

"Well maybe. But they can always come visit me."

"But won't your mom be sad that you left?" She stops stacking.

"You think she'll be sad?" She asked me.

"I would be if my daughter moved out." She thinks for a minute, like she is weighing her options.

"But there are too many rules. And school is too much work." She says. I laugh.

"True, school is a tough one. But when you are done with school, you will be so smart."

"I'm smart now." I laugh again.

"Yes, but this is a different kind of smart. Everyone goes through school. What do you want to be when you grow up?" I asked.

"I want to be a nurse." She says.

"Well, if you want to be a nurse, you have to go to school. You have to learn all about the body and how to fix things." She pauses to think again. Finally she huffs.

"Fine, but I still don't like it."

"I know. But your mom loves you with all her heart. I'm sure all of her rules are there to keep you safe."

"Yeah, probably." She agrees.

"I'll go back home now." She hops up and waves back at me as she heads back home. I had the most interactions with Elisa. But I watched them all.

Emily would always get into trouble, she was also clumsy. I remember when she fell into the river. Her and Mike were playing and she slipped on some rocks and fell in. I was going to jump out and pull her out of the water, but Liam came. He climbed out on the tree and pulled her back in. I should have known then that he was her mate, but they were still so young.

"Well she is stable, her pulse is weak. I'm afraid it is the breaking of the bond. With their full mating and the length of the bond, I'm afraid it doesn't look good." The doctor brings me back from my memories.

"Is there anything we can do?" I ask.

"We just need to wait and see if she wakes up."

"If!" I say. Emily is not going to like that. The doctor packs up his bag and we head out to tell Emily, but she's not there.
