My Brother’s Mate -
Chapter 59
Mikes
POV
I stood there for a moment after I stabbed the girl. I didn't even know her name. I watch as she falls to her knees. I hear a loud bang and then the ground shakes. I need to get out of here. I head for the stairs. After I climb the stairs from the cell, I see a mass amount of people headed down a different set of stairs. I could follow them, or I could try and replace Emily. But does she really want to see me? She could be in trouble. With Liam around, there's no way I could get near her. So I follow the people down the stairs and through some tunnels. It feels like we are in the dark tunnels for an hour before we see sun light again. When we get out of the tunnels, I have no idea where I am. I can see the mountain in the distance. I follow a group of people I went through the tunnels with. "Do you know where we are?" I ask one of them.
"We're close to Talis." She says. If that meant anything to me, that would have been helpful. I think she noticed the look on my face, because she asks.
"Where are you from?"
"Silver Leaf Pack."
"Oh a wolf, ok." She looks up at the sky and then points in a direction.
"Your pack should be that way. But it's a pretty long journey." She tells me.
"Thank you."
"Be careful. That's Seeker territory." She says.
"I will." I head in the direction she pointed.
Emily's POV
"Dragon? But, dragons aren't real. Right?"
I frantically try to look through the smoke. A large winged creature flys over the mountain. I can't believe it, a real life dragon. Hiroen didn't say anything.
"What do we do? How do you fight a dragon?" I ask. The ground soldiers were moving on the outer city wall. I heard the mountain gate open and our soldiers marching out through the outer city.
"Hiroen." Edaline rounds the top of the stairs.
"I hate to ask." She says.
"No, I know." He pulls me to face him. He places a hand on each of my shoulders and looks into my eyes.
"Emily, I am so proud of the woman you have become. You need to get out of here. Your mother and Cyran are waiting for you. You must go. NOW!" A large animal roar draws my attention back outside. Our army is at the wall, the Pures are on the other side trying to get through. The dragon lands on the edge of the outer city and breathes fire into the empty buildings.
"Emily. Are you listening? You must leave. Now."
"No!" I shout, louder than I thought.
"I'm not leaving. I can help. The men down there need help. I'm not just going to run away." I say.
"Yes you can. If you want to help, you have to save yourself. You are these people's hope." Hiroen says firmly. I know he's right.
"Fine." Is all I can say.
"Liam and Marcus, I trust you to take her out through the tunnels." Hiroen says. Liam grabs my hand and pulls my back down the stairs.
"Hiroen." I shout. But I keep heading down the stairs. I still see people trying to escape the outer city. There are still people in the city? With the dragon out there? I pull my arm back from Liam when we reach the bottom of the stairs.
"Em we need to leave."
"I can't just let them die. We need to at least help those people." I gesture to the gates.
"I don't think this is a good idea." Marcus says.
"Well I'm going to help them with or without you." I say.
"We better hurry up, she's not changing her mind." Marigold says. Liam huffs. We rush over to the gate. Soldiers are still walking out as people are rushing in. Liam and Marcus are helping people in. I squeeze out of the gate to see how many more people need to get through. There are still a lot of people that need to get into the mountain.
"Emily!" Marigold yells and points to a mother running towards the gate with a child in her hands. I see the dragon behind them.
"I'll distract the dragon. You run and get them." I shout back. Marigold nods and runs out to the woman and child. Ok distract a dragon, how? I look around and notice loose rocks near the dragon, pieces from the wall. I focus on the large rocks around the dragon. I lift them into the air. It's working, the dragon is watching the rocks. I start to move them, and I slam one large one into the back of the dragons head. He lets out a roar of pain, then he shakes his head from side to side and roars again.
Then he raises his wings and starts flying up. I have a few rocks circling his head. Maybe I'll try to hit him with another one. Just as I begin to move one towards his head the dragon turns around quickly and pulverizes the rocks to dust with it's tail. Then he turns around again and breathes fire over the loose rocks around him. He gets his mouth right up against them. Then he turns and starts flying toward us.
Uh oh. I look toward the rocks. They've melted into the wall. The entire section is glowing hot like embers.
I'm frozen there's a huge dragon coming towards me and I pissed him off.
Marigold is still trying to get the woman and child free through the gate.
"EMILY! We need to leave NOW!" I hear Liam yell and pull at my arm.
Marigold gets the woman and child free they're running towards us away from the dragon.
"Emily, come on!" Liam yells. I snap out of my frozen fear and turn to run with them. I hear the dragon breath in right behind us. The sound he makes before he releases his fire. This is it.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see two figures floating towards the dragon. Then a flash of blue light.
The dragon releases his fire but the blue light pushes his head toward the wall.
I look at the figures it's hard to make out who they are through the dust and the smoke.
It's Edaline and Hiroen!
The dragon looks at them now and follows them as the float out in front of the city. I hear the dragon breathing in again. Then it's like everything around me goes completely silent. All I can hear is the voice in my head. "Emily, I know you are down there. It has been my greatest honor watching you grow up. I love you. Take care of yourself and your mother." It's Hiroen talking to me. He doesn't sound panicked or scared. He sounds calm and accepting. "Hiroen?!" I shout. Looking out at him. I feel Liam's hand on my shoulder.
"Liam Look!" I point out towards the two figures. Edaline and Hiroen join hands in front of the dragon. Flashes of blue, green, and purple light flash around them. The dragon is still gearing up to let out another firey breath. I can feel Liam pulling me back into the mountain, but I can't take my eyes off Hiroen.
The dragon releases the full force of its fire onto them and then suddenly there is a flash of bright white light and a loud boom that echos throughout the mountain. I cover my eyes from the blinding flash of light. The ground shakes and rocks fall.
I open my eyes to see a puff of smoke. I watch it hopeful as it drifts away in the wind revealing Edaline, Hiroen, and the dragon are gone.
"HIROEN?!" I scream tears filling my eyes. I search the sky for a trace of him, but nothing. They vanished.
Then I hear the sounds of marching feet stop. I realized the marching feet have been getting louder and louder. I didn't even notice it until now. We turn to run into the mountain. Loose arrows fall all around us. That's when we hear another roar and more flapping. Did the dragon survive? As we run I look around for the source of the sound. A second dragon lands on the other side of the outer city wall. This one is different, it's a lighter shade of brown than the other dragon. "ANOTHER DRAGON? How many do they have?" I say to myself.
"Hurry, we'll close the gate once we're inside." Marcus yells. Marigold is in front of me, and I watch as an arrow lands in her back.
"MARIGOLD!" I shout. But the arrow must have hit her heart, because as soon as she hit the ground her body turned to ash. I wanted to run to her side but Liam wraps his arms around my waist and carries me through the gate. "Marigold." Tears are pouring out of me. Marcus seals the gate with magic and we take off to meet my mom and Cyran. Liam is still carrying me, even though I'm not fighting back anymore. We replace my mom still in the dining hall. "Emily, oh thank goddess you're alright. Where have you been. What's going on?" My mom asks as she comes over to comfort me.
"We don't have time, we need to leave." Cyran says. We all head down to the tunnels, but my mind is racing with everything that I just witnessed. Marcus leads our group through the correct tunnel. We follow him in silence. I can hear the muffled sounds of screams and the hiss of burning dragon fire. It gets more and more muffled the deeper into the tunnels we go. Tears stream down my face as I silently cry.
