My Ex-husband Begs Me Back
Chapter 797: Selection

Chapter 797: Selection

Amber's face tightened as she bit her lip.

"I know. I went back to the apartment with her, and I saw a man get outof a black car. They seemed cautious, so they entered the apartmentseparately. The man didn't drive in, so I waited outside. He left arounddawn," she said.

"Who was he?" Kian asked.

"Preston," Amber replied.

Kian's eyes flickered, and his hand, which had been in his pocket allalong, tightly gripped the recording function he had activated earlier.Unfazed, he continued, "Are you sure it was him?"

“I'm certain because I've seen him before. He's one of the people incharge of this project, so I recognize him. Moreover, I'm sure because Iwas curious about Louise's reaction when she answered the phone. Ithought she was looking for some connections, so she always datedsomeone older. That's why I followed her. I wanted to make her leavethe company through that means,” Amber explained.

Amber hadn't expected to see Preston there. She was completelystunned.

So she waited at the apartment entrance for Preston to come out, andonce he did, he immediately drove away.

Amber detailed everything she saw to Kian, saying, "Kian, every wordI've said is true. At this point, there's no need for me to hide anything. Inever intended to harm Louise. I only wanted to secure my position inthe company. As for why Mr. Baxter did what he did, I'm not sure. However, Louise's suicide should have something to do with him, right?"

Kian nodded without responding, simply saying, “I've heard everythingyou said. Have a rest now. You can stay here and don't need to go outfor the next few days. There will be someone to deliver food to you, andif you need anything, you can contact the staff."

After making sure Amber was taken care of, Kian left the room, closingthe door behind him.

Kian didn't stay at the villa for long and left directly. Once he was in thecar, he called Ayan.

He informed Ayan, "Mr. Simpson, Amber said that the person who wentback to Louise's apartment with her that night was Preston.”

Ayan didn't seem surprised; he simply responded with a faint "Hmm"and asked Kian to discuss it further at the office.

Simpson Group's office.

Kian played the recorded conversation he had with Amber for Ayan. Hesuggested, "Should we hand over this recording to the police forinvestigation?"

Ayan furrowed his brow slightly and said, "Handing it over directly to thepolice won't be very effective. Let Jenson go meet Amber. As for thepeople who rear-ended Amber's car, we're not sure. In any case, let'snot get involved in this matter. Let everything proceed according to thepolice's procedures.”

Kian nodded and immediately contacted Jenson.

In the afternoon, Amber went to the police station with Jensonaccompanying her.

She also reported the car accident that occurred today because the carwas severely damaged. The police found Amber's and the driver'sfingerprints in the car, so every word she said was considered credible.Following Jenson's guidance, Amber recounted everything she hadwitnessed to the police during their questioning.

Her genuine fear and unease reflected her true emotions, as judged bythe police. In fact, she was genuinely terrified because she was worriedabout the consequences for her parents after reporting the incident. The warnings and threats made her afraid, but she had no otherchoice. Since she had already chosen a side, she had to cooperate.Amber's testimony immediately provided the police with leads forinvestigation. Additionally, Logan presented the video Kian had givenhim on Ayan's instruction, and based on Amber's provided timeline, itmatched the time in the video.

There were a difference between the person and license plate in thevideo compared to what Amber said. This was something the policeneed to investigate and clarify.

The police conducted the investigation at a remarkably fast pace, as ifsomeone was secretly guiding them. They reviewed surveillance videosfrom several road segments based on all the calculations. Due to thelarge number of videos, they had to be carefully filtered.

It was already evening, but the city's hustle and bustle showed no signsof stopping.

A man stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of a high-rise, overlookingeverything in front of him. Sean watched him cautiously and said, "Mr.Walker, the police have started investigating your whereabouts from afew days ago. They also asked the museum to retrieve footage of yourinteraction with Louise at the museum and inquired about yourrelationship with her during this project. What do you think the policeare looking for?"

Preston narrowed his eyes slightly, a hint of coldness gleaming in hisgaze. However, when he turned to look at Sean, all that coldnessvanished, leaving behind an indifferent smile. He asked, "What do youthink they're looking for?"

Sean looked at him puzzled, his expression filled with confusion. “Is itrelated to Louise?"

Preston didn't answer the question directly, only turned to look at Sean. However, his gaze didn't linger on him for more than a couple ofseconds.

With an indifferent expression and emotionless eyes, Preston said,“That's a matter for the police, not something you should worry about.”Preston's response didn't provide any substantial information, leavingSean wondering if he was involved or not.

But one thing he could be sure of was that Preston seemed to trust himless now.

Sean bit his lip and remained silent.

Preston spoke again, "Go and drive. I need to go out for a while.”"Now?" Sean asked.

"What's the matter? Is it inconvenient for you?" Preston asked in agentle voice, though the weight of his words was apparent in his eyes.Sean immediately nodded, "No, I didn't mean that. I'll go drive rightnow."

Preston gave him a deep look, then withdrew his gaze, showing noemotions.

Once Sean left, Preston put on his coat, picked up his phone, andmade a call. He said in a calm tone, "The police have startedinvestigating. If they replace evidence against you or me, it'll be difficult forus to start over in Hance City."

"What do you mean?"

"Naturally, we need to replace a scapegoat for this matter.”

"What do you plan to do?"

"There will be a way out, but you better be careful and avoid anycontact from now on.” He hung up the phone directly, but the otherperson misunderstood his intentions.

The other person thought Preston wanted to use him as a scapegoat,so naturally, they wouldn't sit idly by.

Thus, a daring idea arose. When people are emotionally charged, it'snot surprising for them to make impulsive decisions because they'resolely focused on achieving their own goals, without consideringanything else.

Preston came out of his residence and got into the car. Sean askedwhile driving, "Mr. Walker, where are we going?"

"Take me to Zoie's apartment.”

Sean nodded and drove toward Zoie's apartment.

Upon arrival, Preston didn't immediately get out of the car. Instead, hecasually asked, "Have you been to prison?"

Sean visited the prison several days ago, and Preston was only askingit now. He didn't show any displeasure, but his facial expression slightlystiffened.

He nodded and replied, "Yes, I've been there."

"How is he doing?"

“Not too well, he's lost a lot of weight.”

"What are your thoughts?" Preston asked with a detached tone.

Sean answered honestly, "Of course, I want him to get out. After all,he's getting older and it's definitely tough for him inside."

"Yes, getting older means it's naturally harder for him compared toyounger people. Sean, as long as you cooperate with me, I'll replace a wayto get him out as soon as possible. However, I'm currently beingpressured by Ayan, and I hope you won't betray me. You need tounderstand who you're sailing with, right?"

Sean was momentarily stunned, feeling that Preston's words carried ahidden implication. But looking at him through the rearview mirror, hecouldn't detect any unusual expressions.

He remained silent, and Preston smiled teasingly, "What's the matter?Aren't we sailing together? Or are you feeling guilty about somethingyou've done to betray me?"

He asked as if joking around.
