Chapter 945: Lapdog
Chapter 945: Lapdog
"Have you figured it out?" Camille met his gaze with indifference, hertone lacking warmth.
Unable to discern her emotions, Ayan could only stare at her, his voiceslightly hoarse as he asked, "Are you angry?"
"We were just discussing how you talked to Eileen, right? So, do youwant to answer me?" Camille blinked gently, her gaze seemingly ableto speak, fixed on Ayan.
Ayan blinked in response, and as he looked at Camille, her expressionbecame gentler. He softly replied, "It didn't go very well. I simply askeda few questions and then arranged for a maid to accompany her backto the hotel.”
"Arranged a maid to go back to the hotel with her?" Camille was a bitpuzzled.
He explained, "I suspect Preston has already arrived in Hance, butEileen hasn't mentioned anything. I can't watch her around the clock,so I had a maid stay with her at the hotel under the pretext of cookingfor her.”
Camille nodded in agreement, but she didn't say anything. Herdemeanor didn't reveal much emotion or expression, and she appearedquite composed. This calmness made Ayan feel a bit uncomfortable; itwas as if she didn't care very much.
Ayan: "Why are you ignoring me again?"
Camille lowered her gaze to meet his eyes, her voice gentle, “I'mthinking, are you planning to keep Eileen in the hotel indefinitely? Givenher current condition, she probably won't leave so soon, right?"
Staying in a luxury hotel every day-was Ayan paying for it, or wasEileen covering the cost?
The thought bothered Camille a bit, but she didn't voice it. After all, sheand Ayan weren't remarried yet. Even though their current situationwasn't much different from being remarried, there was still the matter ofthat legal certificate.
Camille didn't say anything, but she kept thinking about it, and the moreshe thought, the more uneasy she felt.
So, Ayan wasn't sure what Camille meant by asking this. He simplyresponded, echoing her statement, "She wants to reclaim her formercareer in Hance.”
"Her old profession?" Camille asked impassively.
Ayan replied softly, “Yes,” conveying his response about Eileen.Camille asked seriously, "If she's willing to cooperate with you, will youreally help her?"
Camille's question was earnest, and her unwavering gaze fixed onAyan.
He unconsciously furrowed his brows, his voice slightly deep, "Eileenwon't cooperate with me."
"Are you so sure?"
“It's not that. Her status and stance don't allow her to cooperate withme. If she were really willing to cooperate with me, she would have toldme everything and agreed to collaborate against Preston when she hadno other choice but to go to Flento and be with Austin.”
"But I want to know, what if she actually does cooperate with you? Willyou really help her?" Camille persisted. Even if certain things wereimpossible, now that the topic was here, she wanted to hypothesize abit. Perhaps that was the only way to ease her frustration a little.Camille pursed her lips, her eyes unblinking. She seemed to haveresolved herself to hear Ayan's answer.
They stayed locked in this tense standoff for several seconds beforeAyan finally spoke softly, “No. Not to mention that I don't deal inhypothetical situations, even if she were truly willing to betray Prestonand cooperate with me, her word wouldn't be trustworthy. So, I won'tuse someone who has lost credibility in my eyes.”
Camille nodded lightly, not revealing whether she found his answersatisfactory. Regardless, she didn't say anything more.
As for his meeting with Eileen, Camille didn't say much about it either. She knew that Ayan and Eileen were bound to meet at some point, especially considering the situation now. She had agreed to the matterwith Eileen before.
Thinking about the test results, Camille's expression grew moreserious.
Oh, right, Preston's phone call to her previously-she was honest withAyan about it. She told him her response and attitude. Ayan hadn't saidmuch after hearing it; he had simply advised her not to bother with himanymore. Even if a call came from an unknown number and she heardhis voice, she should hang up immediately.
Since Eileen’s reactions and actions had largely confirmed that Prestonwas most likely in Hance, Ayan had immediately ordered Kian toinvestigate. Although Hance was large, replaceing a single person wasn'ttoo difficult for Ayan. With just an evening and a morning, they hadmanaged to obtain information about Preston.
This success was largely thanks to Eileen. Despite having a maid withher, Eileen had still left the hotel twice after seeing Ayan.
She hadn't been gone for long each time, so Ayan had narrowed downthe search area and quickly found Eileen near a regular hotel close towhere she was staying. He also spotted the van Preston had driven.Since Preston didn't dare to appear too often, he had basically sentEileen to handle his errands.
Kian had simply booked a room right next to Preston's hotel room. They continued this for two or three days, during which Preston didn'tshow any signs of activity-uncharacteristic of Preston. Kian immediatelycalled Ayan to report the situation.
He asked Ayan, "Mr. Simpson, has Preston discovered us?"
Kian's words had just fallen when the hotel room door was opened fromthe outside. Apart from hotel staff, guests couldn't have access to roomkeys.
So, Kian was immediately alert, rising to his feet. As he saw Prestonenter, his expression became serious. Ayan's voice echoed slowly inhis ear, "You don't have to keep watching. Arrange for someone to keepan eye on him."
Kian didn't respond. His gaze remained fixed on Preston, and his voicewas solemn as he asked, "Is there something you need, Mr. Walker?""Shouldn't that be my question for you? Why are you in the hotel whereI'm staying?" Preston regarded Kian with an indifferent expression, hiseyes carrying a sharp coldness. His face was equally impassive, andhis voice echoed clearly in the room.
Ayan naturally heard it, but his response was lukewarm, "This is ahotel, not his home. If he can come to us, we can naturally go to him."Kian responded to Preston as Ayan instructed, but Preston merelychuckled coldly, "Kian, you're the chief secretary of the Simpson Group. You have to listen to your master in everything. You really do seem likea lapdog.”
Preston's words were full of derision and mockery toward Kian, yetKian showed no reaction. He only stared at Preston, his expressiondevoid of emotion, and said, "Whether I'm a lapdog or a chief secretary, neither compares to Mr. Walker's status. After all, you're the one who isstill facing charges from the Simpson Group. So, Mr. Walker, how noblecan you really be?"
Preston's expression stiffened. “In that case, just let the police comearrest me. If you keep surveilling me like this, do you know it's illegal?"
