Michelle

No birthday party has ever been this awkward. My parents aren’t at war with Kit’s pack, but we aren’t calling them every day to see how they are doing either. This is why there is an awkward silence around the table now that Alpha Sky Howler’s son is sitting in our kitchen.

Everyone is on their guard.

Damien, Lydia, Avery, Kade, Jinora, my parents, hell even my niece, aunt and the rest of the freaking family all have their eyes glued on the special guest.

Kit, however, seems oblivious to the staring. He is the pink elephant of the room, yet happily munches on the chocolate cake without a care in the world. I must be slightly disturbed because part of me replaces his unawareness charming.

As I study Kit’s handsome face, he glances up from his plate and his yellow eyes touch each of my features as if he is seeing me for the first time. When his lips form a secretive smile, I feel the shock rush from my heart to my limbs and settle like lead in my stomach—he caught me checking him out!

I reel back in my chair, knocking over my glass of soda. It spills over the table and my mom, who is sitting beside me, shrieks when it gets onto her clothes. I immediately grab a napkin, but then the strangest thing happens. I hear a click, and when I blink, my glass is standing untouched in its place. There is also no soda on the table.

What the f**k?

I blink in confusion, freezing when I hear someone stifle a laugh. It would be easy to miss, especially since everyone is chatting around the table, but I heard it. Kit was the one who made that sound.

My eyes zero in on his face. ‘Did you just show me a hallucination of my glass knocking over or something?’

Kit’s yellow eyes widen in surprise, and his mouth falls open with something best described as amazement. He is studying me again, and then I hear his voice inside my head. Or… it’s really inside HIS head. I’m the one with telepathic powers, not him.

‘Telepathy?’ He asks.

‘Yes…’ I frown. ‘I inherited that power from my dad’s side of the family, but don’t worry. My dad and my grandpa won’t be able to hear our conversation.’

‘Impressive.’

‘Yeah, whatever… what was the power that you used just now?’

His lips curl and he looks way too happy. I glare at him from my side of the table, but his eyes are now focusing on the cake on his spoon which he shoves into his mouth. Kit seems to have a taste for sweets, which weirds me out. How can he eat cake like it’s his religion and still be so incredibly fit?

‘I have telekinetic abilities. I can move objects, or, in this case, prevent them from tipping over without touching them. I can also go back in time. Not a long jump, but, you know, enough to go back to when your glass was about to tip over.’

He helped me?

Instead of feeling grateful, my irritation grows. For the billionth time in my life, I’ve received Kit’s help, and I don’t need it!

‘You didn’t have to stop the glass from tipping over. I can take care of myself and I don’t need you babysitting me.’

He looks confused.

‘That’s not what I’m doing.’

‘Then what are you doing if not babysitting me?’ I demand.

‘Are you really that dense?’ His glowing eyes are laughing at me and there is a hint of a smile around his mouth.

I have to fight back a snarl. ‘You’re calling me dense now?’

His lips curve higher. ‘I like you Michelle. And after this day is over, I will break up with your sister. It would be strange to do it now, but I will take care of it—I promise.’

‘Why would you break up with her?’

‘To ask you out instead?’ Kit sighs inwardly. ‘Look, I know it might create drama within your family, but you and I are fated mates—your sister will understand.’

I’m still reeling back from his first sentence, and gawk at him. ‘You want to go out with me?’

‘Yes?’

Is he serious?

I fall silent, but keep my eyes on Kit. I’m certain he is playing tricks on me. We might be mates, yet I don’t believe for a second that he is interested in me. It must be a lie! We are too different, and gah, why does he have to be so beautiful?

Kit’s attractiveness makes me boil even more as I run my eyes over his features looking for a clue to the game he is playing. Sadly, he is too good at facial expressions. Kit looks innocent enough to make me question if he has any ill intentions at all.

Maybe he is speaking the truth about wanting to date me?

No.

That can’t be it.

Suddenly, my dad, Misha, clears his throat. It makes everyone turn their heads, and I grow nervous when I see his attention is on Kit. “So, you’re Sky Howler’s son—mind if I ask you why your sister is next in line to become the Alpha and not you?”

“Really, dad?” Bella exclaims. “You have hardly spoken a sentence to Kit and that’s the first thing you ask him?”

For the first time, I agree with my sister. What my dad asked could be a sensitive question; even mom is glaring at him. Luckily, Kit doesn’t look uncomfortable at all and calmly raises his head to meet my dad’s eyes.

He is brave.

“My sister, Kinsley, has a higher percent of werewolf b***d running in her veins than me. We aren’t sure why since we are twins, but my demon side is stronger than her demon side. This makes me less fit to become the next Alpha.”

My dad, who doesn’t know when to shut up, shoots another weird question. “And are you upset about that fact?”

This time, I can see something shimmer in Kit’s eyes. The emotion is brief, and Kit is quick to hide it away from everyone around the table, but I saw it and I also felt it through the mate bond: unhappiness. It’s honestly shocking.

I didn’t think Kit Howler had any insecurities, but it seems I was wrong. Kit is many things, and most of the time, he acts arrogant and cocky, but apparently his demon b***d is where he lacks confidence.

“When I was younger, I wanted to become the next Alpha,” Kit admits with a nostalgic expression on his face. “Werewolves have always fascinated me, and my dad was my biggest idol growing up. I wanted to be exactly like him, and I couldn’t wait for my first shape-shift to happen.”

Everyone is silent around the table, and Kit breathes a laugh before continuing speaking in a calm voice. “I was so thrilled when Kinsley turned fifteen and shape-shifted into a wolf for the first time. I thought it would happen to me too, but… it never did. Instead of turning into a wolf, I transformed into a hideous demon. It saddened me at first, but eventually, I accepted that I hardly have any werewolf b***d in my veins. And since then I’ve long given up on becoming the Alpha. But that’s alright. Kinsley will become a great Alpha, and I’m not bitter about that. I no longer wish to become the Alpha. I just wish that I could shape-shift into a wolf. The freedom that comes with being a werewolf seems exhilarating.”

No one speaks after Kit has finished sharing his story, and he takes it as his cue to smile innocently at my dad. “Does that answer your question, Alpha Misha?”

My dad gapes at Kit, and then he laughs in amusement, and lifts his coffee cup to his lips. He looks impressed. “You’re no coward.”

Kit smiles and scoops up yet another huge piece of cake with his spoon. “No, I’m not, and—” those yellow eyes travel to mine. “Since I’m not going anywhere, I think it’s wise to put all of my cards on the table.”

He did not just aim that sentence at me!

My lips form a pout, but when Bella loops both her delicate arms around Kit’s thick bicep, I’m shockingly enough, hit with a wave of jealousy. Did Bella mistake Kit’s words for a love declaration to her? She must have.

I glare at the couple, and at first, it looks like Kit is about to shake Bella off his arm, but then the i***t notices my glare, and smirks in his seat. And without reading his mind, I know what he is thinking, “Do you realize that you like me yet?”

What a shithead…

Irritated, I scoop up a large chunk of chocolate cake, and avert my eyes from Kit and Bella. I’m trying to pretend that I’m unbothered by their proximity, but, in reality, I’m seething. This is why I feel instant relief when Kit pulls his arm away from Bella.

My sister looks hurt by his action, but Kit won’t even look at her. His eyes are focused on the cake on his plate, and my chest constricts. If Kit were honest when he said he would break things off with my sister, then Bella’s heart is going to shatter. And for what? Do I even want to be with a demon? They sort of frighten me…

Why is Kit Howler my mate again?
