Michelle

The second my order is carried out through the air, it’s like Kit wakes up from whatever trance he was in. There is awareness in his eyes again, and his tongue rolls back inside his mouth.

I’m shocked.

I never thought the contract could be a blessing after his dad talked about how much he despised it. But at this moment, when consciousness has returned to Kit, I’m grateful.

“What… what was I doing?” Kit stares at the girl on the unicorn float. When he realizes he was about to eat her, he grows silent and carefully places her down on the surface of the water again.

The kid is too stunned to speak, and Kit seems to grimace before turning around, gaze locking on mine as he approaches. I swallow thickly when the sunlight gets blocked out by his huge, leather-clad wings.

Holy s**t.

Despite squatting down, my head is still spinning as I peer up at him, dumbfounded and minuscule in the presence of what is the demon king’s son.

I stand helpless before him, my eyes wide as I take in what I must be guessing is a battle form. Even Kit notices my discomfort and gives me a pained smile before changing back into his human form.

His dark hair is still long and framing his face, but the sad expression on his face crushes me. Does he think I hate him or something? For picking up that girl?

“I lost control…” Kit mumbles, scared of even facing me. It’s shocking seeing him so… insecure. He is always grinning. It’s the norm. Seeing him like this? It’s painful.

I walk up to him, and take his hands in mine to show him that I’m still here with him. His eyes widen in surprise, as if he can’t believe I’m not tucking my tail to run. Poor guy. He is so precious and my chest is filled with so much affection and sympathy for him right now.

“I’m glad that you didn’t leave me…” Kit laughs in a poor attempt to lighten the moon. My chest contracts even more and I squeeze his beautiful hands harder.

“Does it happen often?” As much as I don’t want to ask this question and put Kit on the spot, I need to know. I haven’t seen him like that before. For a hot second, I really thought he was going to eat that girl.

“It does…” Kit looks ashamed. “This is… this is actually part of the reason why I wanted the contract between us. I’m sorry for keeping secrets… I just didn’t think it would happen again. Even my dad doesn’t know about this. In his eyes, I’m his perfect legacy and I don’t want to disappoint him. And so I keep telling myself that I’m only eighteen and that I will learn how to control my powers, but… I don’t know.”

“But Kit…” his attention perks up at my words, and he listens intently to my soft voice. “Your dad is the demon king—if anyone can help you, it’s him.”

His eyes narrow with disagreement. “Or we just keep the contract between us and don’t tell him.”

“What?” I can’t believe him right now. “Why?”

“Because I’m embarrassed!”

“Oh, that’s great…” I snort. “You would rather keep your pride than tell your dad about this when you almost ate a little girl? Like, I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, Kit. But even I understand that not telling your dad is a huge mistake. So if you won’t tell him, then I will!”

Kit’s face pales. “Michelle, no…” his eyes are all shiny from unshed tears. “Don’t do that…”

“Will you do it then?” I ask, still holding on to his hands. “Because I would feel like a traitor telling your dad, but this isn’t something you can keep to yourself.”

His eyes flicker away. “What makes you believe parents are the solution to everything? I really don’t think my dad has all the answers. I’ve seen him lose control too, which is why he doesn’t use his battle form that often. But you see, I need it. I want to learn how to master it. Without it I’m not whole. This is why I keep trying, and if I lose control again, then I have you and the contract.”

I don’t know what to answer him, and Kit gives me a small, hopeful smile. “I want you to help me with this. Help me become stronger, and when I can control my battle form, then I will tell you how to break the contract, alright?”

“I… I don’t know.”

“This is the only thing I will ever ask of you Michelle. You’re my mate and the person I trust the most; please trust me in return. Let me be that person for you.”

I’m in utter agony. I know Kit can’t handle his powers on his own. Not when they are as strong as they are. That is why I really wanted to help him by telling Sky. But I also… I don’t want to break Kit’s trust. He is my mate and I… I just want to do what is right, but it’s not easy.

“You’re a good person, Michelle,” Kit says gently. “I know you want to tell my dad, but I really hope you won’t. There are just some things that parents can’t help us with, things that we have to figure out on our own. I want to walk my own path, and spread my own wings…” he grins, and some of his usual charming light comes back. “Literally.”

I snort. “That was the cheesiest thing ever to say!”

“I know!” He laughs. “But I couldn’t help it!”

Hearing Kit laughs makes it impossible not to hug him. I crave warmth and affection, and everything that is him. My arms spread on their own accord, and I pounce on him, tackle-hugging him to the ground. He is smaller as a human, and shrieks in surprise as we both tumble down in the sand.

“I won’t tell your dad,” I say while rubbing my cheek against his day’s worth of stubble. He smells like spices, and himself. Is this from having transformed? I like it, and k**s one of his pectoral muscles. “It’s probably the wrong thing to do and it will end up being a disaster and your parents will hate me forever, but… you’re the most important person in my life, Kit. I love my pack, I do, but… being with you?”

I look down into his huge, kind eyes, and everything inside of me goes hot and soft.

“Being with you has made me realize there is more to life than the pack,” my voice is soft, tender. “With you I can see a future. A bright one. And because I love you, I will push that warning bell inside my head aside and keep this secret from your family.”

Kit smiles. “Thank you. You don’t understand how much this means to me. You’re placing your trust in me, and I won’t let you down. I promise.”
