Lydia

As soon as I beg for the heart of Chang’e to show me what it wants, the entire scene goes white. A feminine voice says, “I will only grant you one wish, little wolf,” and then the scenery changes.

The street gets replaced by grass, and the buildings turn to trees. I am in a forest clearing. The skies are dark, but the moon is full. It’s illuminating the moon goddess standing before me.

Her long black hair is caught in various golden ornaments to keep it up and away from her face. Her kimono is blue with golden details, and there is red makeup around her otherwise dark eyes.

I get nervous seeing her and standing before a living, breathing goddess. A surge of panic hits me, and I bow my head, only for the moon goddess to laugh in amusement.

“You don’t have to bow to your own mother, Lydia.”

I lift my eyes, staring. “M-mother?”

She smiles at me before speaking softly. “Your earth mother gave birth to you. Indeed, you’re also hers, but… you were born from my heart. My b***d runs in your veins, and that’s why you’re also mine.” Her eyes are water now, and she holds out her arms. “I might be a complete stranger to you, but… can I ask for a hug?”

I’m too stunned to say anything. Luckily, I’m not completely dead inside and manage to walk over the grass. I’m barefoot in this reality and wearing a kimono similar to the one of Chang’e.

I feel… pretty.

I smile, and then I’m embraced by Chang’e. Her petite arms really get in there and squeeze me. It makes me feel like the lost daughter she has missed for ages.

“My daughter… oh, how you’ve grown… sadly, I can’t see you whenever I want, but mama loves you. And I’m so proud of you, but I don’t know if I can help you.”

I step away from her and look directly into her dark eyes. There is a tingle in my heart from the hug, but I’m also concerned. “What do you mean you can’t help me?”

She grimaces. “The heart of Chang’e can only grant one wish, and if I grant you another, the last wish will be revoked… that wish was to give you life, Lydia. Wishing for something else would kill you.”

I stare at her. “So coming here… it was for nothing?”

When her expression remains sad, I cry out in frustration. I run my fingers through my hair and shake my head, at a loss for what to. A second ago, I was filled with hope. Now, it’s turned to despair.

“Avery is fighting an impossible battle, and Kade is dead, and now there is nothing I can do about it unless I sacrifice myself?!”

Chang’e, my mother, places a hand on my shoulder. “There is another way for me to help you…”

I lift my eyes to hers. “There is?”

She nods. “You’re my daughter, Lydia, and you were born with moon powers like me, but… those were all lost when you died and had to heal yourself from scratch. It was never your baby who healed you—it was you. Your powers saved you, but sadly, healing is the only power that you have left. All other magic was lost when you saved your life.”

I blink at her. “You said you had a way to help me, but… now you’re saying I’m basically powerless. What is your point?”

Her eyes land on my stomach, and my eyes widen. Fear is pounding in my ears, and I shake my head. “No, not my baby. You can’t take my baby. I love them and can’t sacrifice—”

“Not sacrifice,” her kind eyes meet mine. “Your baby is more powerful than you and more powerful than Avery… I’m only a matchmaker, Lydia. I see who will be mated to whom, and I make decisions, but if I could borrow your baby’s powers, I could grant you another wish.”

“Borrow?”

“Your son would be born as the weakest alpha,” she smiles at me when I stare at her in shock. “Oh, I thought you knew the gender…” she nervously giggles. “Oopsie… sorry…”

“No, don’t be sorry,” I stroke a hand over my stomach, smiling. “I’m happy it’s a son, but I’m also worried. If you borrow his powers, he will become a weak alpha?”

“For a while. Your son’s powers will return to him, but it may take a very long time before he awakens. Like Avery, he is a hybrid, yet there is a slight difference.”

“And what is that?” I ask, worried.

Her smile is warm. “Well, your little treasure is my grandson—his magic will be the strongest you’ve ever witnessed. Once he awakens to it, that is. It will probably happen when he is around eighteen. His magic will run thicker when the mate bond occurs—a natural response when you wish to protect your mate.”

I slowly nod and process her information. “I accept the offer. You may borrow my son’s powers to grant me a wish, but… I’m just having trouble replaceing out what to wish for.”

Her lips twitch, and she places her arms behind her back while studying me with a glint in her eye. “There are a thousand possibilities for what you may wish for. And as the moon goddess, I can see every possible outcome. I know what each wish will lead to. However, I’m not supposed to tell you what you should wish for. It’s not my decision to make. But you’re my daughter, so I don’t mind breaking some rules… even if it might get me in trouble with the other deities.”

My heart fills with joy. “You would do that for me?”

Those eyes of hers shine with inner warmth, and she takes my hands, squeezing them. “Getting in trouble is worth it for the only daughter I’m blessed to have. Tell me what you wish to achieve, and I will tell you what you must wish for.”

I can’t contain the smile spreading over my lips. “I… I wish to defeat Victoria and the vampires. Though, I also don’t want Kade to die. He might have been the enemy at one point, but… he has changed.”

Her smile grows. “Avery isn’t strong enough to defeat Victoria and the vampires alone, but maybe with a little help, he could defeat Victoria. The vampires won’t listen to him since he didn’t beat her fair, but they would regroup and leave you alone… for now. And don’t worry, defeating the vampires is not your job.”

I notice that she looks at my stomach, which says more than a thousand words: the battle against the other vampires belongs to my hybrid son. Defeating Victoria is my purpose.

“Then I wish for Kade to come back alive to help Avery defeat Victoria, the vampire queen,” I wet my lips. “That’s the correct wish, isn’t it?” I don’t want to wish for the wrong thing.

Chang’e laughs. “It is.” She places her hand on my stomach and smiles at me with affection written over her face. “Find a bodyguard for your son when he is young. Avery can be the alpha until your son is strong enough to step up as alpha, but before he gets there… you have to let him leave the pack if he wants to and allow him to replace his own truth.”

“His own truth?”

“Yes,” she sighs. “And don’t take it to heart if your other mother treats you and your baby unkindly. She is a racist who doesn’t hold any love for vampires. This is why she is acting withdrawn.”

“I see…” I take a deep breath. “Well, I won’t let her thoughts bring me down. My mate is a hybrid, and so is my son, and I wouldn’t change that for all the money in the world. I love their werewolf sides as much as I love their vampiric sides.”

“As you should. You will become a great mother.”

My heart constricts when I hear that because… this is the first and last time I will probably meet Chang’e, my second mother.

I part my lips to ask her if I will ever get the chance to see her again, but a blinding white light surrounds me, and then I’m warped back to reality. My eyes open in a snap, and then I hear a gasp coming from my left—Kade, who is down on his stomach on the asphalt, has opened his eyes.

Jinora turns to stone, too stunned to say anything. She remains silent while Kade’s lips immediately curl into a smile as he looks at me. There is gratitude in his purple eyes as he speaks. “Thank you.”

I smile back at him. “Don’t thank me yet,” I tease. “You still have to serve your purpose. I brought you back to defeat that old white-haired vampire together with Avery.”

Kade laughs. “Defeating Victoria will be a breeze,” he pushes himself up on his feet and looks toward Victoria. “Your time has run out, and it’s finally time for you to die.”

Jinora stands up and glances down at me. “I think you and I should help in this battle too.”

“Good idea.”

I push myself up on my feet and focus on Victoria as I shape-shift into a werewolf. Jinora and Kade take their respective forms too, and then we charge forward.
