I nodded and as I wiped the corner of my lips.

I looked at the time and realized that it was already one thirty in the afternoon. I looked towards him and said, "Thank you for the meal. It's getting late, I must get back to work."

I then got up and walked out of the restaurant.

I was not being indifferent, nor was I deliberately pushing him away. I had always believed in letting bygones be bygones.

He followed me out, saying, "I'll send you back."

I nodded; I didn't refuse because it was not easy hailing a taxi in HovelL

He remained quiet even after getting into the car.

Seeing that I would not be the first to speak, he said, "I'll deal with Cecil, so you won't have to worry about that. Just focus on your work."

I frowned and said, "No need!" Since I had called Uncle Charles, I did not want him dealing with these trivial things.

Besides, Charles had been investigating corruption cases in different regions for the past few years. I was just making use of the opportunity.

He narrowed his eyes but did not say anything.

I thanked him again when we arrived at the hotel.

He nodded and remained gentle and refined.

Charles got here very quickly. It was five in the afternoon when he arrived at the hotel. Perhaps he came so suddenly, so the county executive and several city leaders nearby also arrived one after another an hour after his arrival.

Some of the upper class residents also made an appearance. Evidently, Charles did not intend to hide his arrival.

He simply said a few reserved words and instructed people around him to conduct an investigation on the country executive. The others were sent away by him.

He sighed slightly while looking at me, "You've lost weight again."

I chuckled. It was already pretty late in the day, so I asked, "Are you hungry? Why don't you come over to our house for dinner and meet Anne?"

He laughed, looking dotingly at me. "I had thought for sure you were going to ignore me and leave me all alone at the hotel. How rare it is for you to invite me over, so of course, I must go."

I chuckled. "You can't complain when you're at my house!"

He frowned. "What are you talking about? You're also part of the Reid family. When did you become so distant?"

I gave him a small smile and brought him home with me.

As I had asked Norman to help pick Anne up earlier, they were already at home when Charles and I returned.

Anne looked at Charles as if she knew something. She looked at Charles and said, "Mr. Reid, I've seen you on my mother's phone before."

Both Charles and I were stunned for a moment. He asked incredulously, "Oh, so you know me?"

Anne nodded. "Yes, you specially came to catch the bad guys."

I suddenly realized that she might have said so having seen the news. I would sometimes watch the evening news and would keep myself updated on the happenings in Jarold City. Naturally, there would be reports about Charles as well.

Anne had a great memory, so it was no surprise that she would remember Charles' face from the news.

I said while holding Anne, "Anne, don't be rude. He's your grandpa."

Anne looked up at Charles and asked slickly, "Grandpa, can you help me catch the bad guys?"

Charles bent down slightly and looked at her affectionately. "Anne, who do you want me to help you catch?"

After thinking for a while, Anne replied, "The bad guy is in Mr. Zelson's hotel. She always scolds Mommy and calls me a wild child."

Children were so innocent. I used to take her with me to the hotel when I worked as a cleaner out of fear of leaving her alone at home. At the hotel, we would occasionally run into Cecil, who was always fond of making sarcastic remarks and saying unpleasant things to a child.

I had thought that Anne would forget about these things, but surprisingly, she did not.

Holding her hand, I smiled faintly and said, "Anne, Grandpa came to our house for dinner today. He's not here for work. Let's talk about catching the bad guys later. I'll give you a small mission today. Can you and Bennett take Grandpa to the backyard to see what he likes to eat and pick some of it?"
