Chapter 168

After Selina was taken to the inner room, someone went to inform Maverick. Trevon’s grandfather was the former head of the Braily family. He was also the one who had invited Selina theft day

Seling looked at the antique paintings, the desk, and the coffee table in the room. There was a comforting and relaxing fragrance of ambergris waiting in the air. After Selina had relaxed a little, someone came over to inform her, ‘Ms. Harvey, Mr. Brady has asked you to come in.”

Sure thing. Selma said. She wanted to meet the previous head of the Brady family and see how capable he was!

As Selina was walking, she suddenly heard a familiar melody. “The boundless horizon is my love. Flowers are blooming at the foot of rolling green hills. What kind of rhythm is the most swinging? What kind of song is the most joyful?” sang a

Voice

Uh… Isn’t this ‘Dazzling Folk Style‘? That’s an old–school dancercise song, thought Selina. When she arrived at where Maverick was, she was shocked by what she saw.

An elderly man was playing Dazzling Folk Style and dancing along with the video, wearing a power fitness suit, sneakers, and a hairband. He was sweating and shouting, “One, two, three, four, once more!” It was none other than Maverick Brady! The former head of the Brady family was doing dancercise at home? It was so shocking that no one would believe it!

The butler who was leading Selina kindly reminded her, “Ms. Harvey, don’t doubt your eyes. Mr. Brady likes to do dancercise at home to stay fit.”

“Uh… Should I wait?” Selina asked awkwardly.

“Yes. Mr. Brady will be ready to meet you after this. I’ll take my leave now.” The butler was very polite and quietly left.

Selina just watched Maverick diligently dance, full of vigor. He was almost 70 – about the same age as Silas. Maybe since Maverick took care of his health and exercised regularly, he looked less than 60 years old and had a thick head of hair, which was rare. Moreover, Maverick was much more handsome than Silas. Although Silas had taken good care of himself, he was still elderly and frail, and his innate genes weren’t as good as Maverick’s.

She had nothing better to do, so she looked at Maverick and judged which of Trevon’s traits were inherited from his grandfather. After Maverick had finished dancing, he wiped his sweat with a towel. Upon seeing Selina stare at him, he laughed. “Pretty lass, what’s so good about an old man like me? It feels embarrassing when you look at me like that.”

“No, you’re not old, Grandpa. I can tell from your face you’ll live to be 100,” said Selina.

“Oh! You can also read faces? Are you lying to flatter me?” asked Maverick.

“Your face is full and well–proportioned, from your forehead to your eyebrows, the bottom of your nose, and your chin. An excellent base. Big square cheeks that look rosy and shiny after exercise, which proves that your kidney is healthy enough. High cheekbones, strong bones, big ears without wrinkles. High, long eyebrows that are still dense and aren’t white despite your age. Your eyes are clear and bright, your philtrum is deep and long, even and firm teeth, and a well–developed chin…” Selina pinched her fingers. What she said was reasonable and well–founded. Maverick fully embodied all the signs of someone long–lived. The more she talked, the more awestruck she felt. He was rich, powerful, and long–lived. ‘He’s got the things so many people envy but will never have! This is the chosen one, damn!‘ she thought.

Maverick waved his hand and said, “Girl, I’ll take it as flattery. You’re brave to call me ‘Grandpa‘ so familiarly. Aren’t you afraid that I invited you here to gobble you up?”

“You called me over in the middle of your dancercise while wearing such a sporty and youthful outfit, so I don’t think you’re trying to embarrass me. If you just want to meet and test me, I’m always happy to oblige,” Selina answered.

She gave a textbook response, and she behaved flawlessly without humbling herself. Maverick had investigated Selina, so he had a general idea of her capabilities. He said calmly, “I believe my grandson has good taste. You got someone as cold as Trevon to marry you and grant you status with a marriage certificate. You’re quite extraordinary…” As he spoke, Maverick sat

down in front of a chessboard in the room. “Girl, come here and play chess with me. Let’s talk about you.”

“Sure,” answered Selina. It was just chess. Selina wasn’t afraid that Maverick would really eat her, so she calmly walked forward and sat opposite Maverick. He was playing white while Selina played black. As they played, she answered all the questions Maverick asked.

Gradually, Maverick stopped asking questions and devoted himself to the chess game with Selina. They fought back and forth until Maverick was forced into checkmate. He sulked briefly before saying, “I admit defeat.”

“Thanks, Grandpa,” Selina said liltingly.

“Who did you learn to play chess from? There aren’t many people in Clusia who can beat me. You’re one of them, and so is Trevon.” As the head of the Brady family, Maverick had to be gifted and proficient in everything. He had played chess for decades and even more frequently after he retired, so he was already at a level of perfect play. In the entire Brady family. only Trevon could beat Maverick. So, whenever Trevon came to the Brady residence, Maverick was keen to play a few games with Trevon and ask him about Insight Group.

Playing chess was the best way to understand a person’s character, and being able to beat Maverick in chess showed Selina’s intelligence, mindset, and talent. Maverick thought, ‘Well, if the woman Trevon likes wasn’t capable of even this much, I would’ve broken his legs! If he really had been tempted by her beauty, he wouldn’t have been suspected of being gay for so long nor pass my and Keith’s tests.‘

“You should know that I grew up in the countryside. I had a mentor who took care of me and raised me. When he was free, he would ask me to play chess with him. After playing for so long, I’ve learned a thing or two about it,” Selina answered. When she mentioned her mentor, her face softened.

“Oh? Trevon didn’t teach you? Hm… No wonder, this chess skill must have been honed after years of practice under a mentor and on your own. May I ask what your mentor’s name is?” asked Maverick.

“My mentor’s name…” Selina’s voice trailed off as she was slightly startled. It seemed none of her fellow students, including herself, knew their mentor’s name. They only called him “mentor.” She answered, “I don’t know. He never told us. We just got used to calling him ‘mentor.“”

Selina suddenly felt like a failure. ‘Why did I never consider something so important? Perhaps he deliberately hid the truth by not telling us his real name?‘ she pondered.
