Chapter 14

It has been a month from the time Joshua walked out of me in my house, every morning he texts to check up on me, he sends food at lunch through a courier company and texts just before he goes to bed but he won’t return any of my calls or come to see me. I have completely shut out Ems after telling him that I was trying to build something with his brother and I couldn’t allow myself to be friends with him no matter how innocent our conversations were.

I took up Joshua’s advise and invited Martha for a day out last weekend and surprisingly it went well and now she called me yesterday that we link up today which we are doing right now.

‘I am glad you are here, I was starving.’ She says immediately I settle on the chair opposite her.

‘Look at you.’ I say rolling my eyes

We are meeting at Yellow Eatery, they have the best tacos we have both tasted and we would always order their food out it’s the first time we are actually sitting down to eat here.

‘I love the ambiance.’ She says taking a sip of her juice

‘Don’t tell me you are doing cocktails.’

‘Well I know you are off alcohol so if I misbehave you will handle me.’

I laugh shaking my head. I still haven’t recovered from the embarrassment of how I met Joshua which is what has forced me to stay away from alcohol. Until I am certain that I can hold my beer down without such escapades I am off it.

‘I really want to know what happened that pushed you into staying off alcohol.’

‘I will go with that secret to the grave.’ I say

The waiter brings our food, I had asked her to order just before I got here.

‘Oh my word, Jackie got herself a man.’ Martha says looking at her phone

‘What are you talking about?’

‘She just updated her Instagram story.’ She says putting the phone in my face

I sigh deeply. Jackie is my bestfriend and I should be knowing about her trips so I am shocked to see her taking a photo with Emmanuel in Ethiopia.

‘I didn’t know she was traveling to see him.’ I say handing the phone

‘I swear to God he looks edible, how did she land herself such a man? I mean Joshua is hot no offence but a man in uniform is my type of man. From my mouth straight to God’s ears.’

‘You are being dramatic.’ I say shaking my head

She is about to say something when my phone starts to ring, it’s a whatsapp video call from Jackie.

‘Hey bestfriend.’ I say composing myself

‘Girl guess who is catching flights and not feelings.’

‘What are you talking about?’ I ask with a light laugh pretending Martha hasn’t showed me anything

‘Okay so I started stalking Emmanuel Joshua’s brother through a colleague of mine who is also in Ethiopia for peace keeping and when he told me that today they would be out in the city I decided to get on a plane yesterday and here I am.’ She says turning the camera away showing the men in uniform drinking beer

‘Wow. I thought you didn’t like him.’

‘I couldn’t stop thinking about him and of course he was shocked to see me but then I lied that I was there to see my colleague and I think he bought it.’

‘Jackie but what exactly are you doing?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Flying all the way just to see a man? A man that you obviously don’t even like or want a future with?’

‘You know I always get what I want, I am just positioning myself and eventually Emmanuel will fall for me. Besides I did a back ground check, he comes from money and he is making money plus he is Instagram worthy so why not?’

‘Wow and his feelings?’

‘If I didn’t know any better I would say that you didn’t want me to be happy, you have one of the brothers why can’t I have the other? Besides we could be sisters in marriage.’

‘I am happy for you Jackie.’ I say and immediately Emmanuel comes on the screen

‘Enjoy yourselves you two, I need to go.’ I add and cut the call even before any of them can respond.

‘Swallow it.’ Martha says

‘What?’

‘Whatever is on your throat, swallow it. You look like you are about to cry.’

‘I don’t know Martha. I just don’t know.’

‘Joshua is the perfect guy yet there is something about Emmanuel right?’

‘I guess.’

‘You need to let whatever feelings you have for Emmanuel go, even if he turned out to be a better man do you honestly want to lose your friendship with Jackie over him? You guys have come a long way.’

‘So what am I supposed to do now?’

‘Get Joshua back, he is a good man.’

‘Yeah.’ I say sighing

‘Nandy.’

‘Yes.’

‘I know I am younger than you and all, I don’t even have the experience or maturity you have but I feel you need to be careful with Jackie.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘She has this aura about her that just makes me feel like she wants the life that you want.’

‘I will think about it.’

‘As you think about it also make things right with Joshua, I really like him for you.’

‘Thank you little one.’

‘No problem.’

‘And Nandy.’

‘Yes.’

‘I am sorry for moving out like that, but I have no regrets.’

‘As long as you are happy.’
