Once Rejected My Alpha Stepbrother Wants Me Back Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Ashton’s POV

“We’re just going to bury her?” Dane stepped up close to me, asking.

After that night of picking the lady up, I took her to the hospital to see if I could revive her but it didn’t work out. Well, she dangled between consciousness and unconsciousness but today, she -happened to die.

“Of course, what do we know about her?” I threw him a condescending look and tossed my gaze forward, watching as my guards dug the ground so we could lay the lady to rest.

Right this minute, we were at the pack’s cemetery and one glance around showed me the tombs of all the dead wolves of our pack with their names written on the tomb.

Flowers were on most tombs which were kept by the families of the deceased.

The summer sun shone with intensity, making the guards digging to the

Dane huffed a breath beside me and then took off his black sunglasses.

“But that’s strange, you know,” Dane said.

I gazed over at him and shrugged.

grave sweat.

“How could someone have poisoned her drink? I mean, we need to catch this culprit. Dammit.” He

cursed.

Yeah, that was what confused me.

After examining the lady, I found out she had a deadly poison in her body. It appeared her drink was spiked. But the burnt mark on her hand showed she was attacked also by that same strange. being from years ago.

I’m confused as hell because

I saw her die that night while trying to…

“What do you say?” Dane’s

words cut my thoughts short.

“About what?” I asked him.

“Making investigations.” He intoned.

I scratched the tendrils framing my face backward as I said. “It’d be a dead end, Dane. I’ve done the necessary search I could.” I maintained.

Chapter 16

This was a mystery Dane wouldn’t be able to figure out. It wasn’t a matter of bringing his warrior skills on display.

This was a mystery that would take years to uncover.

The only thing I knew was that, that night the being saved me, giving me this burnt mark.

And I was there when she took her last breath. So, how was it possible there was someone like her

out there? When the only person with her was under my careful watch?

Shaking my head, I decided to leave this off. Thinking about it would make me not achieve anything today.

After we buried the lady.

Dane and I left the cemetery for my car when he said.

“Alpha, I need you to take me to Night Walker pack. Just about an hour’s drive.”

“Dude you sure know I have work waiting for me at the office? Patients too.” I grumbled.

“Of course, I know. But just to meet a friend from camp.”

I grunted my approval and we hopped inside the car, while I drove to Night Waller pack. The pack were known to act like rogues because of how rash they were but they weren’t rogues at all.

In a nick of time, my car rumbled as I parked my car by the roadside, killing the engine.

Dane nodded thanks to me before he got off while I sat back to wait for him.

I just brought out my phone to surf the internet. Watching the funny video helped to release a bit

of tension.

That was until I heard a distant growl and a woman screaming.

Swearing under my breath, I shot out of my car when I saw the woman in a dress running like she was being chased by hundreds of wolves.

Not to lie, she was being chased by a wolf but it was just one.

Gotta help out, my wolf snarled inside me and I grumbled.

I took off in a dead run, wanting to save the lady in distress. It wasn’t easy because this pack had several narrow alleys.

Looking ahead through my wolf’s eyes, I see the lady running into an ambulance bay, her hair in

tatters

The wolf behind her was persistent too, running inside the bay with her.

I added strength to the run, dashing into the bay with them.

I saw the wolf about to slash its paws over her when I blocked him off.

I released a venomous growl, my fists curling into fists as I watched the wolf, staggering backward.

As if the wolf realized who I was, it relented immediately and bowed its head.

It was the normal respect I got for being the alpha of the strongest pack on the East Coast.

I broke my eyes away from the wolf and turned to face the lady.

Shocked, my mouth hung open as my gaze locked with that pair of hazel eyes that made my wolf stir.

Oouhhh, my wolf purred.

Dammit, I found it hard to speak, holding the eyes of the woman I had always craved.

“Jo…I

mean, Rose.” I corrected myself quickly when her face turned to a scowl.

“What are you doing here?” I probed.

I heard Josie scoff and edged away from me as if…I’m carrying the deadliest disease.

I watched her gather her bag together and dust her dress.

Like a fool, I followed her in tow.

I didn’t mind being a fool for her, of course.

“What were you doing here, getting yourself in trouble?” I barked, remembering what had just occurred.

The wolf had turned back to his human form, I didn’t realize until I saw the man tread forward. “Alpha Ashton.” He called.

I paused as well as Josie and we both stared.

“Derrick. It was you?” I called out, a hint of accusation in my tone. He was the alpha of the Night Walker pack.

“What else did you expect? I saw someone good and felt like having her.” He dragged his gaze around Josie, making me reel in anger.

No man did that to what was mine.

I rumbled a growl that made Derrick stare back at me.

He dimmed his eyes in recognition as he asked. “Wait, is she yours?”

“Yes, she’s mine.” I thundered, my possessive instincts rising.

I heard Josie scoff but I didn’t mind, pinning my gaze at Derrick, daring him to stare lustfully at my mate again.

Just being around her stirred the bond, I never knew it would still fester.

I thought that after being apart for years would make the bond die.

She hadn’t gotten another mate, I could feel it. I can still feel my bond with her wolf, my wolf gushed.

That made me stare sharply at Josie.

Damn, I shouldn’t

have stared because her eyes caught mine sharply, I swear I blushed.

But she blushed more.

“I’m sorry, Ashton. Never knew she was yours. Besides…she has no mating mark.” He said snidely. “Excuse me but you’re mistaken. I’m not him, read my lips.” Josie snapped to my displeasure.

I turned sharply at her but she didn’t mind me.

“And thanks for not cutting my life short.”

I thought she was thanking me but I was wrong, she was literally thanks Derrick.

He wasn’t the one that saved her, I did. I frowned, wanting to protest but Derrick’s voice beat me to

  1. it.

“My pleasure, beautiful.” He slurred , scrubbing his beard as he watched Josie’s

disappearing figure.

Turning to Derrick, I demonstrated killing him but he snickered and I ran off, chasing Josie. “Josie, wait there.”

She didn’t stop and I clasped my hand over her wrist.

To my surprise, Josie turned sharply and slapped me hard across the face.

My widened eyes stared into hers and I swear I saw her raging hatred for me…fuck.

To make matters worse, my wolf uttered.
