Once Upon A Rejection -
Chapter 28
We didn’t arrive back at the campus until late afternoon. Ezra drove Willam and Justin in his own car so the journey was a lot more relaxed this time. Ezra’s car was behind us the whole way. I kept glancing back at him and giggling at his expression of boredom and frustration.
We stopped by Justin’s dormitory first. Grayson told them that he would check on them later in the week and we drove to my dormitory. I had left a few books and things there that I wanted to pick up before we went to the hotel.
Grayson parked his car outside of the dorm building and followed me up to my room with Ezra only a few paces behind us. Ezra was looking at all the women around him, smiling at them. I think I even saw him winking at a few of them.
I still had my key but I decided it was a good idea to knock before walking in. I have been away for a few days now and June might have taken advantage of my absence and invited company. That was the last thing I wanted to walk in on.
June opened the door seconds after I knocked. She was studying, I could see her laptop and paperwork laid out on her bed. Her hair was tied in a messy bun and she was wearing a baggy t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms. I could tell from the look on her face that she was glad for the distraction.
“Molly, how was your weekend?” She asked.
I didn’t get a chance to answer. Ezra stepped in front of me. The way he was looking at her was almost predatory, he licked his lips as he stepped closer towards her. June looked stunned, she took a step away from him.
“You don’t need to be afraid of me, I’m not going to hurt you. I would never hurt you.” He said, He was smiling at June.
June looked as though she was trying to decide if she should hit him or flee. I can’t blame her, my half brother was acting like a complete psychopath.
“June, this is my half brother Ezra. Ezra, this is my best friend June.” I said.
I was trying my best not to roll my eyes at Ezra. Was he really trying to flirt with my best friend right now? I will kill him when we get out of here.
“It is a pleasure to meet you June.” Ezra said.
He took hold of June’s hand and kissed it. June looked as though she was frozen in fear. Her pupils were dilated and her back was stiff. Her mouth moved as though she wanted to say something but no words came out.
“I just need to get a couple of things.” I told June.
I was trying to break the tension but that was almost impossible given the way that Ezra was looking at June. He looked like he wanted to eat her whole.
I tried to ignore it and walked into the room. I started looking through my draws. The sooner that we could get out of here the better. Hopefully that would be before Ezra said or did anything stupid.
“I will be here for a while with Molly and her mate so maybe we can get to know each other.” Ezra said.
Oh fricking hell. Ezra had no clue how to talk to humans. Next thing he would be telling her all about the moon goddess. I started searching faster.
“Errmm, sure. Why not?” June said. She didn’t sound sure but at least she didn’t seem to notice what Ezra had said.
“That is great, maybe we can all go for a drink tomorrow. After you have finished your classes for the day obviously.” Ezra said.
Ezra was almost charming. I had to glance over my shoulder to make sure that he hadn’t been replaced with someone else while I wasn’t looking.
“That would be nice.” June replied, using her polite but bored voice. I had heard her use that voice a few times when she was getting unwanted male attention. Moist men got the hint and left her alone but not Ezra.
“Great, I can’t wait to hear all about you.” Ezra said.
I glanced over my shoulder again. June was blushing as Ezra was smiling at her. He still had hold of her hand but now he had threaded her fingers through his own. Grayson was standing by the door, he looked as confused as I did.
“I don’t know why, I swear I am not that interesting.” June said, trying to look anywhere but at Ezra who was making far too much eye contact with her.
“That’s not true. I have only known you for a few minutes and I already replace you fascinating.” Ezra said.
I found the book I was looking for. I took it out of the draw and stuffed it into my bag along with a few other personal items. I picked up the bag and walked over towards Grayson.
“We should probably get going, we need to get something to eat before check in.” I said.
“You should come with us.” Ezra said, still giving June 100% of his attention.
His voice was so sweet it sounded like honey. I wonder if this is how he got all those other girls back home to fall for him. If he was completely charming until you got into his thrall and then he treated you like crap. It would explain why they all seemed so unwilling to break-up with him, even when it was clear to the whole world that he didn’t care for them.
“I am not sure, I have some work to do.” June said.
“It won’t be more than an hour or so and besides you wouldn’t leave me alone with these two would you. They are so wrapped up in each other that they would completely ignore me.” Ezra m****d, pouting slightly.
“Ok but I need to get changed. Can you wait outside for me?” June asked.
“Sure.” I replied.
I started to head out of the door when I noticed that Ezra was still standing in place holding June’s hand. I took hold of his arm and started dragging him away. I pulled him all the way down the corridor and out of the building. I am sure that people were staring at us but I didn’t care. I was so annoyed with him.
“Molly what is wrong, why are you so pissed off?” Ezra complained as I pulled him away.
“I told you that June was my best friend.” I said.
“So?” Ezra asked. The fact that he was playing dumb just made me more annoyed.
“So she is not one of the girls you go to school with who you can just seduce and then treat like dirt.” I shouted.
We were outside next to Grayson’s car now and people were starting to look at us but I didn’t care. I wasn’t going to let him treat my best friend the way he treated all those other girls, there was no chance.
“It’s not like that.” Ezra said, trying to defend himself.
I wasn’t going to let him get off that lightly, he needed to learn boundaries.
‘I can teach him boundaries.’ Scarlett growled.
“June has been through a lot recently and she deserves a lot better than someone like you who is just going to use her.” I said.
I was so angry that Jade as Scarlett were begging to take over so they could show Ezra my wrath. I pushed them back.
“I swear to you Molly, it is not like that.” He said.
Like heck it wasn’t, I know exactly what he is like. I saw the way he treated his last girlfriend, or was that the one before the last. It was so difficult to keep up with his love life.
“No, you are going to break her heart like you have with all those other girls. I have seen June broken hearted before and I am not going to let you do that to her.” I said.
Ezra growled. I stopped. I can’t believe he just growled at me, I should rip his head off for that.
“Did you just growl at me?” I whispered in disbelief.
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t help it. June is my mate and hearing you talk about her with other men. I felt jealous.” He whispered.
I was taken aback. Did he mean that or was he just trying to get me to lower my guard.
“How can you know that, you aren’t even eighteen yet.” I whispered.
“Well I feel drawn to her in a way that has nothing to do with physical attraction, although that is also there. I also have an almost unbearable urge to protect her. It is difficult being even this far away from her.” He said, glancing up at the building anxiously.
I considered his words. There was a chance that he was telling the truth. Grayson said he felt something similar for me before he turned eighteen and if I was completely honest with myself I felt some of the same feelings myself.
I remember when I was younger, it was difficult being in the same room as Grayson. It felt as though there was a force pulling me towards him. I was constantly worried that I would end up throwing myself at him and looking desperate.I didn’t feel this need to protect him that Ezra and Grayson spoke about though.
‘That is because Grayson is an alpha, he doesn’t need my protection.’ Jade said.
I chuckled.
“Good luck.” I said.
“What do you mean?” Ezra asked.
“June hates f**k boys.” I said.
I remember more than once people approaching her at parties trying to seduce her. She saw right through their facade and systematically destroyed them. She may be a hopeless romantic but she was no push over.
This was clearly karma at work. After treating so many women poorly he was going to have a rough time with June. The moon goddess must have a sense of humour.
I started laughing.
“I am not going to treat her like that.”
“It’s not me you have to convince, it’s June and she can be quite the handful.” I said.
Ezra got a panicked look on his face. I could tell he wanted to ask me more questions, but just then June opened the door to our building and walked out effectively silencing him.
