Perfect Match: Irresistible Desire For You -
Chapter 336
Upon hearing Joseph’s words, guilt washed over Mike, and he fell into deep thought. At that moment, Joseph heaved a sigh and asked exasperatedly, “Why are you wasting your life just because of a woman?”
Mike was as drunk as a skunk. He staggered against the wall and smiled bitterly at Joseph. “You’re just a little luckier than me. Oh, wait. No, you’re much luckier. Ashley loves you so much, while here I am, abandoned. How could you understand how I feel?”
Mike said these words in almost one breath. All of a sudden, he fell along the smooth wall. It could be seen that he was down in the dumps. His black hair was messy, and his eyes were filled with melancholy. “She’s with someone else now. We planned to get married, but one day, she told me she had never loved me. We should be married by now, but she left me. I’m so f*****g stupid.”
Joseph was a good listener. He just listened and did not even interrupt Mike when he poured his heart out. Joseph knew that it would be better if Mike said all his sorrows instead of keeping them to himself.
Joseph knew very well how Mike loved Rosa the first time he laid his eyes on the couple during his wedding day. The affection in Mike’s eyes was apparent that it could serve as evidence for his love.
‘That woman might have loved Mike back, but her love wasn’t deep enough.
In the game of love, the one who loves deeper always ends up getting hurt.’ At that moment, Mike lowered his head and ruffled his hair in frustration. ‘I’m a loser!’ he remarked inwardly, his eyes full of pain.
It was only then that Joseph broke his silence. “Has there been any misunderstanding between you two?” he asked in a low voice.
Mike sneered. “Ha-ha! Misunderstanding? I don’t think so.”
On the day of their breakup, the thought that Rosa had been held, protected, and hugged by another man lingered in Mike’s mind. To add to the pain, Rosa told him that she loved that man but never loved him. It broke Mike’s heart when she humiliated him. Now, even alcohol could not relieve his anguish.
Before Joseph could open his mouth to speak, Mike reached out for the wine bottle on his left.
‘I thought being drunk would help relieve the pain of being abandoned. But I’ve been drinking for a long time, but I’m still miserable. Maybe I haven’t drunk enough.’ Instead of stopping, Mike insisted on drinking some more.
As Joseph saw that Mike had no plans of stopping any time soon, he swept the bottles of wine with his long legs, breaking them all at once. What he had just done caused the whole room to smell like wine.
“Joseph, get the f**k out of here!” Mike bellowed in fury.
His last and only hope was destroyed. Now, his eyes were filled with despair.
Mike tried to pick up the bottle that had been broken in half, but Joseph dragged him to the next room before he could.
“Mike, why are you doing this to yourself? Do you think that woman would come back if you hurt yourself? Why would she?”
As soon as Joseph said these words, he punched Mike square in the face. The bruise at the corner of Mike’s mouth hurt and bled.
Joseph cared about Mike and even regarded him as a family. It was just that he could not bear to see Mike so desperate over a woman.
“You’ll only ruin yourself and hurt those who truly care about you!”
His fist landed on Mike’s face again. Mike staggered a few steps back and almost fell to the floor.
“The more pain you feel, the more wonderful life you should live. Being left by a woman shouldn’t be a big deal. Why do you seem that you’ve been abandoned by the whole world?”
Joseph threw a punch yet again, and his fist left another bruise on Mike’s face.
Mike felt that his head was spinning. Slowly, he raised his hand to touch his red and swollen face. “I hate… being hit… on my handsome face!” he stammered in displeasure.
Joseph’s blows must have sobered Mike up that he now cared about his face. He was back to his narcissistic self now.
“Come here, you bastard!” Mike lunged forward and swung his fist. Although he was not as strong as he usually was, his glare was intense and terrifying.
Ridiculous as it might seem, but Joseph felt relieved that Mike finally came to his senses.
Without even breaking his stance, Joseph caught Mike’s fist and advised, “You should be awake by the end of the fight. Don’t make those who love you worry.”
With that, Mike launched an attack as hard as he could. He was no longer as drunk as before. Meanwhile, Joseph did not attack him anymore and just defended himself. He sometimes let Mike hit him, thinking that he was helping his brother-in-law vent his grief and resentment in his heart.
A few moments later, Mike leaned against the wall, catching his breath. He was hungry and exhausted after the fight. “Wait. Let’s take a break first. Let’s continue the fight later,” he said in between breaths, his face beaten black and blue.
The atmosphere was relaxing if it were not for the pain in their bodies. All of a sudden, Joseph’s phone rang. It was on the bed, a few feet away from them.
“Honey,” he greeted. Impressively, he became gentle in an instant.
“Why didn’t you give me an update for a long time? How’s Mike?” Ashley asked. It could be heard in her voice that she was worried.
“Don’t worry. He’s just a little drunk. I’m sure he’ll be fine.” Joseph took a few steps forward and added, “He has something to tell you, by the way.”
After saying that, he covered the speaker and whispered to Mike, who was sitting quietly on the corner, “Ashley is worried about you. But, you know, pregnant women should go to bed early.”
Mike nodded in understanding. He grabbed the phone from Joseph’s hand and copied his words. “Ashley… ouch… I’m fine. I just drank a little. I’ll be fine.”
When he spoke, he accidentally touched the wound at the corner of his mouth, making him wince and g***n in pain.
“Mike…”
Just as Ashley was about to ask why he got himself drunk, Mike interrupted her. “You should go to bed now. Don’t worry about me. Don’t torment my future nephew or niece,” he jokingly said.
“Alright. You should rest now too. See you tomorrow.”
“Okay.” Mike gave the phone back to its owner.
Joseph hung up the phone and then gave Mike a piece of advice.
“You should take a shower.” He looked at Mike from head to toe with a frown. Mike’s clothes were ragged, and he reeked of alcohol. In a word, he looked disgusting.
“I didn’t know you were fussy.”
Mike grinned, aggravating the bruise on the corner of his mouth. He wiped the b***d from it and g*****d, “Ouch. How could you be so cruel?”
Joseph, however, seemed perfectly fine. “You deserve that. But as far as I know, Mike isn’t one to give up easily.”
After saying these words, he stood up and reached out his hand to Mike, who then grabbed it and hoisted himself up. “You’re right. I have to bestir myself. Thank you, by the way,” he sincerely said.
Their friendship was complicated, and they were in conflict most of the time. Now, the atmosphere was unusually lively and harmonious, but Joseph was not used to this.
Mike could not help but get embarrassed. He pounded Joseph’s chest playfully and frankly said, “Younger brother, I’m going to take a shower now. I just realized I smell bad.”
For some reason, he deliberately stressed the words “younger brother”. Upon hearing this, Joseph felt that Mike had not changed. He was still as shameless as before. But he must admit, he felt gratified and ashamed of Mike at the same time.
