Perfect Match: Irresistible Desire For You -
Chapter 498 (The End)
A training camp for new recruits had been set up in the majestic military base at Ariosa.
“Thump! Thump! Thump!” The sound of military boots marching drifted across through the autumn wind, before a tall and thin figure in military green slowly approached.
This person had neatly bobbed black hair and a beautiful face. When the four drillmasters, who were standing around the sand pool, noticed the person, they stopped squirting the new recruits with water from the large hoses.
One fat drillmaster spoke, his voice shaking as if he had seen a ghost. “General Guzman, what are you doing here?”
Milena glanced at the four drillmasters, who were now standing ramrod straight, and walked up to them, her eyebrows raised. “Why? Can’t I come here?”
“That’s not what I meant. You’re here to inspect…”
He was interrupted by the drillmaster opposite him, “General Guzman, watch out!”
At the shriek, Milena cast a cold glance at the nervous man opposite her and said impatiently, “Watch out? What do you mean by that?”
Without waiting for his reply, Milena turned to face the dozens of messy young recruits, coming to stand at the edge of the sand pool, her hands clasped behind her back. “Practice hard! I was also trained in this manner. This will help you stay fit and reach new heights!”
“Yes, madam!” the new recruits shouted, their spirits high as they saw the badge on her military uniform.
Milena walked along the edge of the sand pool, a satisfied smile on her face, which, somehow caused the four drillmasters blanch with fear.
“General Guzman, please be careful!”
Someone finally plucked up the courage to remind Milena again, but was interrupted by another excited voice. “Chief Brooks, you’re finally here! We’ve been repeatedly reminding the general to be careful.”
At the excited words and the familiar name, Milena turned around, frightened. But she slipped and missed a step in the process, causing gasps of horror to go up from everyone present.
Milena went deathly pale as she hugged herself, but a tall figure rushed over towards her and pulled her into his arms.
Still badly shaken, she concentrated on the man’s rapid heartbeat, and clutched his sleeve tightly, her face drained of all color.
“Chief Brooks, we…”
“You continue to train. I’ll deal with my family,”
the man interrupted the trembling drillmasters.
Milena heard the familiar snappiness in the order and came to her senses. But before she could break out of his arms, the man picked her up.
In the military car, Milena sat in the passenger seat, her expression downcast. The driver had an angular, handsome face. This was Milena’s husband, Zane Brooks.
As chief of staff of the provincial military region, Zane Brooks was famous for deciphering codes in the army. He came from a well-connected family and was a virtuous, intelligent man, well-versed in both literature and martial arts.
Two years ago, they had had an unusual experience one evening. Milena had been in a good mood, humming a tune as she hung her clothes up to dry. One of her underwear had suddenly flown off the line, no thanks to the wind. She had rushed downstairs to retrieve it and had found it on the head of a tall man. She found this handsome man take the pink lace underwear off his head and stare at it. Perhaps she was embarrassed, or she was frightened by the man’s sullen face, but Milena who had been fearless since childhood, turned and made to run away.
“Damn it! Stop!”
She had become frightened by the cold words but had turned to look carefully at the man, who now threw her underwear to the ground. She found him to be really good-looking, which was how she ended up laughing and flirting with him. “Congratulations. My underwear fell on you, which means that you will be my man from now on. I’ll protect you!”
Milena didn’t notice that the man, who had come to this military base for the first time, was holding a thin laptop in reconnaissance mode. Her words went around the whole base, hitting headlines within minutes and causing a huge uproar in the army base.
After a fierce argument, Milena, who had never felt so humiliated in her life swore that she would never have anything to do with this strange man who had brought her nothing but bad luck.
Since then, Zane Brooks had become more and more famous. Milena avoided him like the plague and many-a-times pretended he was nothing more than a passerby. It wasn’t until Milena asked Zane Brooks for help that they began seeing each other.
After having spent time for a few days, he took her away at Darlene’s wedding, which caught the attention of Milena’s parents.
Six months later, she married Zane Brooks, who turned out to be exceptionally good at flattering the elders. Her joke had finally become the truth.
The military car hummed as it zoomed across the road. Milena finally couldn’t bear the depressing silence and said sincerely, apologetically, “Sorry, I should’ve stayed at home. The baby is fine, fortunately, or I won’t be able to forgive myself.”
“Milena, you’re going to be a mother soon. Can’t you make it easier for me?” Zane Brooks said, a hint of helplessness in his voice.
Milena had become pregnant less than a year after they had gotten married. She was now three months pregnant but she often sneaked out, disobeying his instructions for rest, and wandered around when she got bored. Zane Brooks had ordered everyone in the army base and his relatives and friends that if they saw Milena, they would have to tell him immediately.
He was usually at home with her but today, he had happened to go out on some important business in the army base. And Milena had almost met with an accident! Zane Brooks was terrified at the thought, but he wouldn’t scold her. He would, instead, give her the silent treatment.
Milena apologized softly, “I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I promise I won’t do it again.”
Zane Brooks frowned. “Do it again?”
“No! I was wrong. Please don’t be angry,” Milena pleaded, waving her hand around. “It won’t happen again.”
She looked away, silently beating herself up over what she had done. Zane Brooks heard her apology, satisfied at having taught her a lesson.
As they returned home, which was a ten-minute drive from the army base, his face simmered with anger while Milena looked apologetic.
As a matter of fact, Milena, forever the unruly woman, always listened to the unapproachable and arrogant man, Zane Brooks, who knew ways to make her compromise. That was also the reason why Milena’s parents had chosen him as their son-in-law.
As soon as the two got home, Zane Brooks ignored her and went straight into their room. Milena wasn’t used to such treatment and the more she thought about it, the unhappier she became. She lost her temper and rushed in, scolding him, “I had thought Darrel was the emotionless one. But you are even more disappointing. Darrel would at least smile at Brandi. But you? You always pull a long face at me. I really do regret marrying you!”
Zane Brooks slowly turned around. His eyebrows furrowed and pain flashed through his eyes as he said, “Milena, I’ve been with you for so long, and I’ve tried my best to take care of you. You can do whatever you want. But you are pregnant now. You didn’t stay at home and because of your adventure, almost lost the baby. You regret marrying me, so you don’t cherish our baby. Am I right?”
Milena sensed the helplessness in the man’s tone as he shot out this aggressive accusation, but didn’t know what to say. She just shook her head desperately.
He noticed the timidity in her eyes, and said softly but bitterly, “I know I pushed you too hard back then, but you know what? I’ve been trying my best to be good to you. I don’t expect you to love me the way I love you. I just hope that you won’t regret living with me for the rest of your life.
But you always have so many opinions about me and have no idea what I’ve been doing for you. Have you ever thought that I could be afraid? I’m afraid of losing you.
If you regret marrying me, then I… I will…set you free after you give birth to the baby safely. I’ll take care of our baby and stay out of your life…”
His voice was barely audible towards the end. This was the first time that Milena had seen him bewildered and scared. The same feeling of fear swept through Milena’s body, as if she was being drained of all her b***d.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She threw herself into his warm arms, pounded his strong chest, and shouted hoarsely, “Zane, you’re a bad guy! Damn it! Are you an idiot? Would I have married you if I didn’t love you? Would I have slept with you and had a baby with you? I was just talking nonsense out of anger. How could you be so stupid? We’re soldiers. You can’t divorce me. You can’t leave me!”
Zane Brooks’ face lit up at this. All his sadness disappeared as the tearful woman punched his chest. He bent and kissed away her tears, before slowly kissed her lips and cutting off her chatter.
It was a long time before Milena resurfaced, out of breath.
She stopped crying as her anger gradually dissipated. The room was now filled with love.
She blushed at how she had cried and confessed her love to him. Pregnant women were indeed sentimental!
Milena lowered her eyes and allowed him to hold her as they sat down on the edge of the bed. Zane Brooks gently bent and picked up a pair of cotton slippers from under the bed. He then took off Milena’s knee-high military boots and said in a somewhat stilted, gentle voice, “Don’t wear military boots. You might fall. I bought these cotton slippers for pregnant women for you yesterday. You can wear these when the weather is cold. I heard that they can also be used for foot massages…”
The man continued to chatter away as Milena’s tears started to fall. She choked as she said, “I thought… you entered the room because you didn’t want to talk to me… Sorry… I’m really sorry.”
It was easy for women, who knew how to turn on the charm, to win a man’s affection. Milena was beautiful and attractive when she showed her vulnerability. Zane Brooks took her in his arms and comforted her, his voice soft, “Don’t cry, Milena. You’re pregnant. Crying is not good for your health. How could I ignore you? I was so scared you wouldn’t talk to me.”
Milena looked up at him with tearful eyes and gave him a gentle k**s. “I won’t cry. We can’t ignore each other from now on.”
“Mm!” Zane Brooks nodded, wiping off the tears on her face, and said, “I love you, Milena.”
“I love you too, Zane,” Milena whispered shyly, her voice still thick with tears.
They might have misunderstood each other in the past, but they had now irrevocably fallen in love with each other.
