Chapter V

The sound of a car horn blaring forced my sleep filled eyes to burst open in surprise.

Wait what?

I struggled to open my eyes again, putting an arm over my face to block the harsh light of the sun that was seeping through the slightly opened beige coloured curtains and hitting my face. I rolled over and found myself staring at my phone and oddly enough the sound of the car horn was coming from its speakers. I frowned in frustration, obviously looking confused because not even a moment later I heard a giggle of laughter. I looked up to replace my best friend clutching her stomach in laughter, her face turning into some kind of human tomato.

“I got you so bad Bella!” She wheezed. I furrowed my eyebrows at her annoyed at the idea of being woken up so early. “Why this early Claire?” I grumbled into the pillow.

“We’ve got school today again silly.” Laughing at me still because she knew I’d become so accustomed to sleeping in when I was in England.

“I don’t want to go.” I whined crossing my arms and pouting my lips, giving her the ultimate stare down. I was already sitting up by this point and the fogginess in my brain and eyes had cleared. I was awake naturally but if my head hit the pillow again, I knew I’d be asleep in an instant.

“To bad,” she giggled grabbing my arm and dragging me off my bed and exposing my skin to the cold air. I reluctantly followed her as she threw me into my en-suite, “Take a shower, you smell.” She walked away with a swing in her hips and I glared at the back of her brunette head as she left the room. I hadn’t heard the door close before she yelled out to me again, “I’ll wait for you downstairs, you have fifteen minutes or we’re both going to be late.”

With that the door was closed and I internally groaned, quickly stripping off my pj’s and jumping into the shower. It took me about eight minutes to shower and I wasn’t going to have time to do makeup or hair. I chucked my hair up in a wet messy bun and pined some loose ends down, putting my contacts in afterwards. I grunted, at least I look somewhat presentable. I went to the cupboard and grabbed out a white hoodie jumper to hide my hair and some three-quarter fitness leggings. I had no time to pick an outfit and these two paired together didn’t necessarily look terrible. I grabbed my black Nikes and ran down the stairs towards the front door.

As promised Claire was there waiting for me with my bag in her right hand and a salad in the other. “Thank you,” I said breathlessly after walking up to her and accepting both the salad and my bag. She’d already packed it and made sure I had everything for today. “You’re lucky I love you.” A smirk appeared on her face and although she was playing around, she meant it. “Okay I get it; next time be ready to go. Now let’s go before we’re late!”

I pushed her out the door and towards the car door that Michael was already holding open. We jumped into the car and the door closed behind us. Michael hopped in after us and hit his foot on the pedal, lurching us forward and speedily driving off towards school. I scowled at Michael but he just chuckled. “Let’s try not to kill Claire and I next time hey Michael,” scolding him for his behaviour.

“Well you’re going to be late Princess and I wouldn’t want that to happen.” There was a mischievous glint in his eye as he said this so I just decided to let it slide instead of letting myself fall victim to more of his funny pranks.

“Okay Michael, understandable.” I tried to make it look like I was keeping a straight face but I couldn’t contain it considering Claire was beside me howling with tears in her eyes. We all joined in and the car sounded like a bunch of howling, laughing wolves. “You’re so uptight sometimes Isabella, it's quite amusing,” she said to me with a humorous look in her eyes.

“Whatever.” I didn’t care if I was acting like a child but the fact that they were both shaking their heads at me with amused smiles told me they didn’t care either.

We reached the school eventually and it turned out that I was more than just a couple of minutes late, I’d missed all of first period. I’d said a quick goodbye to Claire as I ran to my classroom, I was surely going to trip. I sighed at the thought of making myself even later. To top it off I had no time to go get books for my current class so I was going to have nothing to write down in. Luckily, I’d brought my iPad in my bag today so I could use that.

I knocked on my chemistry door hesitantly, I knew all eyes were going to be on me and the idea of that was suffocating. I hadn’t had to deal with it yet, especially after yesterday and I really didn’t want to deal with it now even if was just a bunch of school kids.

“Ah Miss Evans how nice of you to join us, finally.” A few people in the class snickered. Man was I going to slap the grin off his ugly face, one day. I composed myself before speaking, “Sorry for being late sir.” I went and sat down at a table in the back, considering those were the only ones free.

I’d heard someone speaking but I wasn’t paying attention as I was getting out books for the class. I felt a tap on my shoulder and I looked up to see Mr Harrington moving his mouth. “Sorry sir I wasn’t paying attention.”

“Thank you captain obvious,” rolling his eyes before continuing, as some of the class members giggled. I just sighed and continued listening on to the lesson praying that the end of the day would come faster.

The first three periods had flown by faster than I thought and second lunch was already happening when I walked out of my third period class. I turned the corner and found Claire waiting for me by my locker just like we’d planned.

“Ready for lunch Bella?”

My stomach decided to respond to her by growling loudly. I gave Claire an amused look and we both burst out laughing. “Looks like my stomach answered that one for you,” I told her between giggles.

Claire had been trying to figure out if it was a bear or an angry wolf that I was hiding in my stomach when we reached the cafeteria. Heading off to buy some food while she went and sat at the lunch table, I lined up grabbing an apple, a juice box and some spaghetti. I paid and stepped out of the line and started walking towards the table Claire and I sat at, obviously not paying close enough attention to the foot that shot out underneath me causing me to land on the gravel floor groaning as my I went face first in my spaghetti.

I could already feel my head throbbing from wherever my head landed, which was either the edge of the tray or the concrete underneath the painful scraping from the gravel; I couldn’t determine which one it was yet. The whole cafeteria was dead silent and I felt all gazes on me while I was on the floor. The moment I raised my head, the cafeteria exploded with laughter. I was blushing furiously and there were spaghetti strands all in my hair and smeared on my face.

I looked up to meet the eyes of my attacker and take a guess at who it was, Cameron? No, I imagine him more as an egotistical pig but it was him and he was having a ball. I saw Claire running towards me but before she could reach me I felt Cameron’s hot breath on my neck making my hairs stand on end, “Next time don’t mess with me nerd and we won’t have issues.”

I was dragged away from the cafeteria quickly. Holes were burned in my back from the people who were still laughing at my appearance and staring me down. I was rushed to the bathroom by Claire but I couldn’t really see her, she kept spinning in circles.

“I need to take you to the nurse Bella!”

“How many fingers am I holding up?” She held up some fingers but I couldn’t see them so I just shook my head.

“I think you have a concussion Bella, you hit the floor hard. I’ll clean you up then we can walk over there.”

She proceeded in cleaning me up and I changed out of my clothes into some spare ones that she’d had in her bag, I’d rinsed my hair in the basin and chucked it up into a loose bun again. I was tired at this point and my eyes were closing. Claire had seen so she snapped her fingers in front of my face. “Isabella, you have to stay awake, come on honey.”

She started pulling towards the door and out into the hallway, it didn’t take long to get to the nurse’s office. I heard Claire discussing the details with the nurse but I’d told her to lie. They were discussing my phone calls next and I couldn’t help but listen in.

“I need to call her parents Miss Willows.”

“Is it possible if I speak with her father first Marie? I live with Bella now so I’ll be going home if she does.”

“Yes, that’s fine, just make it quick. I will go and assess Miss Evans and when you’re done hand the phone to me.”

I saw Claire nod her head and start walking towards the phone. I trusted her so I had no problem letting her call my Chef considering he took care of all school related issues. Although there had been none.

I had noticed Marie walking towards me, I tried to give her a warm smile but my face hurt so much.

“Hello Bella.” She smiled warmly at me, “Let’s check out the extent of the injury and we’ll see what we can do for now.”

“Just lie down for me and I can have a look at your face and any other injures.”

I let her check me over and I could feel her body tense when she reached my head.

“You have a few scratches and scrapes but nothing that can’t be fixed with some antiseptic and bandaging. I can see a bruise forming around your right temple just above your eyebrow and I have a feeling it’ll only be worse tomorrow. Can you answer some questions for me?”

I nodded my head at her too tired to open my mouth. I couldn’t understand how one fall could hurt so much, I did hit my head hard and it wasn’t those slow falling dramatic ones you see in movies so I’d hit the ground with a smack.

“What is your headache like on a scale of 1-10?” She asked me.

My voice was barely audible when I spoke, “I’d say about an 8.”

“What about vision?”

“I feel sick and everything keeps spinning in circles.”

“I would say Claire was right when she mentioned a concussion Bella.”

I just nodded at her, I wanted to rest and fall asleep but with all that was happening I had a feeling I might not be allowed to sleep. Something so small was now this big deal. I just wanted to go home and cry. Claire came around the corner with the phone in her hand, “I’ve finished talking to him Marie, and he says he can talk to you if needed but the driver is on his way now.”

“Good, thank you Claire, will you sit here with Bella she must not fall asleep yet if she has a concussion.” With that she walked out of the room.

“Michael’s on his way now with the car. I told him to be discrete since school isn’t over and there could be kids roaming around.”

“Bella, how are you feeling?”

“Shit.” Was all I could manage to spit out.

“I can't believe Cameron did that to you, I’m so mad at him and he’s going to get a mouthful from me when I’m back tomorrow. Like he might not know that he’s hurt you but you just don’t go around tripping people for the fun of it. Who does that?”

She was seething when she said these things and I knew she was mad. I mean I know I would be mad later but for now I couldn’t care less. I felt numb as I lay and stared at the ceiling.

Ever since we’d gotten home I had people coming to check on me every three hours. Pete had called a home doctor to come in and check on me. A confidentiality waver was signed because I was the Princess. She’d done a quick check on my injuries and then focused on my concussion for a while.

After she left a lot of instructions had been given to Pete and I just felt like a damsel in distress. I couldn’t do anything but sleep until I was woken up three hours later and this was only to check that I wasn’t getting worse or going into a coma, which I doubt would happen. The doctor had also told me to eat even if I felt sick, just something simple like soup would be fine. If I was getting nutrients and energy in along with lots of water, then my body would slowly start to repair itself.

The grazes and scratches were taken care of with antiseptic and some bandages, and the bruise on my face well... Let’s just say it looked like I’d been knocked around by someone. I’m assuming the bruise on my face was from hitting the side of the floor/tray with my face. Graceful, I know.

I didn’t spend time dwelling on the asshole that tripped me, I wasn’t the person to cry over that type of thing. I was hoping that he hadn’t intentionally tried to hurt me and that it was just a little prank for his own amusement.

I didn’t interact with anyone for two days because I’d been advised to stay home. During the nights, Claire slept with me just in case anything happened and in the morning, she left for school. Friday came around quicker than I thought and I had to get back to school. My perfect record attendance was ruined due to a certain selfish prick.
