Tony had died at the hands of the woman he had once rejected, and even though in his last words, he denied doing it, for Mel, Tony had rejected her because he always hid his feelings, perhaps with the hope of making himself stronger, having greater self-control, and mastering the circumstances in his life. However, he couldn’t foresee that Mel would betray him and exact revenge for that offense, one he had caused himself by attempting to achieve the autonomy that would make him more powerful.

I couldn’t help but relate what I had just witnessed to the story unfolding between Aly and Nicolas. Could they end up like this, the same thing that had stalled what could have been a beautiful and happy mate story due to an absurd pretense of self-control, dominance, power, sufficiency, and deceptive freedom?

For now, we had to overcome the challenge we were now facing to replace out what would happen next. With the sound of Mel’s footsteps against the earth, approaching where I lay, with all the bones in my back and chest broken, barely having the strength to breathe with difficulty, the hope of seeing that future was fading.

But at least, Aly seemed to have managed to escape the ambush, and I only hoped she wouldn’t be foolish enough to try to free us, not when there was a white wolf whose power seemed to be neutralizing the wolves of her rivals. All Mel had to do was track her now that Tony was gone, and Aly would also be brought down by the fifteen beasts waiting for her orders to tear us apart because she only needed to say it, and we would all go to join Tony, wherever he was at that moment.

“I’ll be more merciful with you, and it will be my way of compensating you for healing my leg,” Mel said as she squatted down beside me. “If it hadn’t been for you, Tony would still be alive, and your escape plan would have worked.”

It was something I had wanted to think about, but I knew her words were true. It was because of my healing, the mercy I had shown her in that final moment, that Mel was able to slip away and join David Zoe’s men to change the course of what was going to be a spectacular counterattack, where victory was in our hands, and we only needed to reach out and take it.

I would have spat in Mel’s face at that moment if I could, but I didn’t even have the strength for that, and I knew that, at that moment, she was using her white wolf ability on me because Gea was silent, despite being present.

“That’s why I’m going to allow you to choose, Sussan,” Mel continued, her cold gaze embedded like two ice floes into my eyes, and the peculiar smile of triumph distorting her lips. “If it weren’t for you, Tony would still be alive, and your escape plan would have worked.”

She was a damn harpy, blinded by resentment, hatred, and something of a despair that would never leave her, no matter the pain and destruction she caused in others. Even though she had the power to neutralize Gea, not my abilities, her feelings flowed through me like a river that had been released after being dammed for a long time. If I had felt what was now flowing from Mel’s torrent of emotions a few minutes earlier, none of this would be happening.

Mel was blinded by pain, and if she had been rejected, let the whole world burn. If it were up to Mel, no one should experience what had been denied to her.

“So, what’s your answer, Sussan?”

Joining the uncontrolled flow of Mel’s emotions, the anguish of her proposition gripped my heart. I still felt the twins alive; I knew they were only a few steps away from where I lay, in their human form, in pain from the same fractures that lacerated my body, and they had also heard what Mel had just proposed to me.

‘Choose my brother, darling. If that’s what you have to do for there to still be a glimmer of hope, choose him,’ Ethan said impulsively, as expected. ‘I know Liam is smart enough to escape later and take revenge for this. With me, you’d only have a furious beast that would eventually get itself killed.’

‘I won’t even consider what he’s saying. If anyone else is going to die in this forest, it will be the three of us, not just one.’

‘But as much as it pains us, my brother is right, though he’s mistaken about the name he suggested,’ Liam said with determination in his voice. ‘You must go with him. He has the strength and courage to never yield. Soon, you both will be free, reunited with our pack to prepare for revenge.’

‘Shut up, both of you! Stop talking about death and choice. Have you already given up?’

‘Darling, look at our situation. You know we’d gladly die with you, but if there’s still a chance for you to live and do it with one of us…’

‘She’s not going to go through with this,’ I said, overcoming a new wave of pain and summoning the courage they both needed at that moment. I realized they already saw themselves as lost, without hope, because despite their Alpha strength, neither of them had the abilities I possessed, which I was beginning to invoke at that moment. I just needed a little more time. ‘She’s blinded by pain, one that she hopes to spread to everyone who crosses her path in her uncontrolled and senseless quest for vengeance. She’ll kill both of you after taunting me into believing that I could choose.’

‘In that case, darling, just say it, and we’ll all die together.’

“Say it now, Sussan. I won’t give you a minute more. If you don’t give me a name in the next few seconds, I’ll kill both of them and solve this dilemma for you.”

Mel’s eyes hadn’t gained a single glimmer of sincerity. I knew she was serious and that if I didn’t give her a name in the next few seconds, she would keep her word and kill them both. I needed time, now more than ever, but the time she was offering me was not enough, and perhaps she was aware of that too. She had to know that she could only silence my wolf, but my abilities were intact, beyond the neutralizing reach of her powers.

“I know there’s still some compassion in you, Mel. There’s still a chance for you,” I said, even though I knew what I was telling her was a lie. After being able to kill the man she once wanted to be bonded with, I was aware that Mel had condemned herself to despair, thrown into a free fall abyss of pain that would never cease, but I needed time, and every second was precious. If she had resorted to deception to trap us, there was no reason for me not to do the same and make her taste a bit of her own venom. “You don’t have to resort to this to feel better, Mel. There’s always hope, there’s always a second chance for everything.”

Those last words were actually directed not at Mel but at myself and the twins. I sensed their change of heart when they took possession of them, and I tried to convey the confidence we all needed at that moment. Liam growled, catching Mel’s attention, who wasted valuable seconds giving orders to control him.

“What do you say to me, then, Mel? Do you even want to try?” I noticed that, even though I would never convince her, a flicker of doubt crossed her stony gaze, barely cracked by my words. But she quickly repaired the fissure, and her eyes regained the same hardness as before.

“No, Sussan, there’s no hope anymore. It’s a word I hate, and you’ll come to hate it too because your time is up.” I feared the worst and was about to scream, pleading for mercy or anything that would give me just a little more time. Never before had a minute seemed so valuable as in that moment, but before the words could escape my lips, the beast that imprisoned me pressed its claw against her face, almost suffocating me and covering my eyes. The last thing I managed to see was Mel getting up. Terror gripped my heart. I had never felt so much fear before. One of the twins, or both, was about to die, and I had only managed to heal the vertebrae of my spine. I still needed to mend a few more bones to be ready to strike. Just one minute, one damn minute to change the course of what was about to happen.

“The other girl!” Mel shouted, standing beside me. I had no idea where Aly was, but wherever she was coming from, it was the perfect moment.

‘Quick, Sussan. She’s distracted now. I’ll help you.’

Never before had Gea’s voice sounded so sweet.
