Chapter 175 More Conspiracy Is Brewing

Matthew was already feeling quite intimidated by the meaningful look from Marin, and he then sawthat Deputy Commander Chen went to investigate under direct orders. Taking into account Marin'simplications, he now realized that he was already done. If those villagers testified against him, hewould be executed for sure. He could not help directing his gaze to Evan, who might just be theonly one that could save him.

Evan caught Matthew's look and immediately understood what he wanted. Fury flashed through hiseyes, but he contained it without letting it out.

"Commander, if there is nothing else, I will take my leave of you.” Evan bowed to Marin, beforeinstructing someone to take Matthew away.

Soon after, loud sounds of ransacking came from Evan's tent as a figure banged against the walland then fell on the ground. It was Matthew, whose face was now was twisted in pain as his lowerbody was once again covered in blood due to his collision with the wall.

"You little bastard! How dare you lie to me! Do you want to die?" Evan stomped on him a couple ofmore times to let out his rage, looking really furious.

He turned Matthew into a punching bag, letting out all his rage onto him. Matthew had lied to Evan,landing him in an even stickier situation where he couldn't see a way out. Once Deputy CommanderChen found out about the truth, Evan would also be punished for Matthew's crime.

"Captain, I know I made a mistake. I did not know that little turd would have the audacity to comeback. Please! For old time's sake, please save me!" Matthew knew that he would definitely lose hislife if Evan did not help him. Because of this, Matthew was now willingly taking a beat from Evan. Hecrawled to his leader and sat up, clinging to Evan's leg and begging him to help. It was very clearthat Matthew was a coward who was scared of death and would never learn his lesson.

"Why don't you just die? When Commander replaces out, do you think that she is going to let you live?Don't you dare try to drag me down with you!" Evan was infuriated by Matthew's poor judgment.He kicked Matthew with all his might, looking wild and ferocious.

"But captain, you are already in too deep. When Commander replaces out what you did, she will becoming after you. You're the one who pointed an eager finger at Rocky in front of everyone andincited everyone to gang up on him. If they replace out about the truth, you will be seen as the onewho covered up the mistake of your subordinate. Everyone will start to believe that you are simplyjealous of Rocky and that this envy was what drove your motivations to eagerly persecute him. Youwill have a hard time at the northeast military camp.” Seeing that begging was not working,Matthew decided to take a different route and use deeper psychology. He knew that if he could notmake it out of here alive, he wouldn't go down without a fight. So he launched subtle threats andscare tactics at Evan, hoping to gain some traction and leverage against him so that he would beconvinced to help Matthew.

"You!" Evan stared at Matthew in fury. He was right on the brink of ending this pitiful man's life onceand for all. However, he couldn't do it even if he was very angry. After all, Matthew's death wouldprobably only lead to more difficulties that would make even more obstacles for him. If he wantedto save Matthew, then there had to be someone to take the fall, which could only be Rocky."Captain, if you wish to maintain your status at the northeast military camp, you will have to movequickly. If Commander replaces out about the truth, both of us will be screwed," Matthew said it with acold smile which masked the grimace of enduring the pain in his lower body. Ever since Rocky haddestroyed his genitals, Matthew's laugh had been kind of peculiar. Rather strangely, it sounded likea duck's call. Matthew felt as though he had nothing more to lose. All his dignity as a man wasgone. But if it was the last thing he did, he wanted to make sure that Rocky would suffer.

Evan gave Matthew a cold stare. Without saying anything, he walked out of the room.

Deputy Commander Chen was leading his men on their way to the village in order to replace out thetruth about Rocky. Just as they were about to reach the village, a figure appeared before them."Evan, what are you doing here?" Deputy Commander Chen asked with much surprise.

Evan was slightly out of breath after rushing to catch up with them.

"Deputy Commander Chen, may I talk with you for a second please?" Evan asked, gesturing to theside.

Deputy Commander Chen raised his eyebrows, wondering what was the matter. He ordered his mento stand by before he followed Evan to a more private spot on the side of the road.

"Evan, how may I help you? Or is there any message from Commander Marin?" Deputy CommanderChen looked confused as Evan's presence here was completely out of order.

"I am here to make a deal with you," Evan said bluntly, his face dark and sinister. He had cut straightto the point.

"A deal? What kind of deal?" Deputy Commander Chen was even more confused at hearing Evan'swords.

A slight, scheming smile flashed across Evan's face. He leaned close to Deputy Commander Chenand whispered something in his ears. Deputy Commander Chen's face suddenly changed. Heexclaimed, "Seriously? You want me to set Rocky up? There is no way! Was he actually telling thetruth when he accused Mathew and his men of being guilty?"

"Deputy Commander Chen, you are not young anymore, and you are just a second-in-command ina small military camp. Don't you think that your talent is being wasted here? A few years from now,with your physical condition going downhill, I don't know if you can still be able to hold yourposition as a second-in-command in this small military camp.” Evan smiled coldly at him.

"What do you mean?" Deputy Commander Chen grunted. He understood what Evan was implyingand figured out that it must have had something to do with the deal that he just talked about."Based on the commendation of Commander Marin, if all goes well, she will be transferred to theheadquarters within one or two years. Then someone will have to fill her shoes in the northeastmilitary camp. To my knowledge, there is another contender for this position besides you. He is alsoa Deputy Commander. Other possible candidates from other military camps might also be eyeingthis position. I have always felt that you, Deputy Commander Chen, are the backbone of ournortheast military camp. Without you, the entire place would be in chaos. I believe that there is noone else more suitable for this position than you, sir. However, if you do not have the endorsement or backingfrom someone influential, I seriously doubt someday you will be able to garner the position ascommander and lead the northeast military camp,” Evan said devilishly, crossing his arms. He knewthat his words would get to Deputy Commander Chen.

"What is it that you want to say?" Deputy Commander Chen's face darkened. He was a little angrywith the fact that his career had just been implicitly threatened, but he could not deny that Evan hadgotten to him already. He was an ambitious man, a characteristic typical of men in his line of work.Marin's position as the commander was supposed to be his. However, after Marin somehowmanaged to join the Crimson Dragon Group, she was promoted to a commander to lead thenortheast military camp and took the position that had been meant for him! She had been veryyoung at the time, still in her early twenties! At first, he had been very resentful about thearrangement. However, he was convinced after he saw her ability to lead as a commander. The former was a leader of anentire army while the latter was relatively less influential.

"If you help me with this, I will pull some strings to make sure that you will become the leader of thenortheast military camp after Marin is transferred to the headquarters. I would appreciate your kindrecommendation for me to be your second-in-command by then. This way we both get what wewant. You know that I am from Ji Clan. Given the status of my family, I can have it done easily withjust a snap of my finger. So if you truly understand the situation at hand, you will appreciate myadvice. Deputy Commander Chen looked at Evan growing smaller in the distance and grew solemn,obviously deep in thought. He finally turned back to return to his men, a glint of greed flashingthrough his eyes.
