Rejected And Forsaken -
Chapter 39
Narrator
Months passed by and things stayed the same for David. His life finally started to flourish with his being accepted in to the vampire kingdom.
Even back in the pack, life was going on as if nothing wrong had happened. Cade and Hailey continued being the appointed alpha and Luna of the pack. They had the utmost support of the elders since Hailey’s father was the high elder. They had practically no problems at all.
Until Hailey started to feel Cade distancing himself from her. He started to not return from alpha duties until late it was awfully late. And by the time he did come back, Hailey would be too tired. After all, she was the Luna of the pack and the duties of the Luna is not a simple thing.
But then there came a day Hailey expected him to come back early. It was the 14th of February. Yes. The day special for lovers. But that was not the only reason why it was special for her. It was the day he first asked her to date him. She was ecstatic when he did. Because she thought Cade was the best and the most athletic wolf in the pack. She had hoped that he would be her mate but things didn’t turn out to be in her favour.
Nevertheless she had turned the things her way. It was a good thing her father supported her decision. She hastened to finish her Luna duties earlier and hurried to get ready for her chosen mate. She had made special preparations for them so that they could enjoy in private. She asked the chef to make his favourite pasta and meatballs before she ran up to her room to get ready herself.
Before she entered the bathroom, she texted to him, reminding him to come back early. She didn’t want to take chances.
Babe. I have a surprise for you. Come early.
Satisfied by her text, she hurried to get ready. After taking a quick shower and wearing a sexy lingerie, she sprayed his favourite perfume all over her. She then did her make up after styling her hair in loose curls. Smokey eyes and deep red lips – perfect. She thought as she smirked at her reflection. After wearing a cardigan to cover herself up, she waited for the preparations to be done.
There was a soft knock on the door. Quickly checking her reflection, she hastened to open the door.
“Luna. The meal is ready.” Their servant bowed as he kept his eyes on the floor. Slightly disappointed that it was not Cade, she sighed and nodded.
“Yes. Set the table in the alpha’s quarters. And leave. I’ll take charge from there.” She instructed and retreated back to the room.
She slumped on to the mattress pouting and feeling dejected. Why was he still not back? Taking out her phone to see if he had replied to her text or at least texted back to inform her about being held back. But her disappointment increased when she realised that he had not texted back.
“He had not even opened my text!” she whispered, her heart now thumping against her chest as feelings of uncertainty and anxiety magnified. What if he is in trouble? She thought, her eyes widening with fear.
She took her phone, careful not to drop it as it felt slippery with sweat. She dialled Cade’s number and waited for it to ring. Except that it never did.
“It is switched off?” Hailey murmured to herself as she felt her throat tighten uncomfortably. Taking a few deep breaths, she dialled her father.
“Hello baby girl. How is your day?” he greeted her just after a few rings.
“Papa. Have you seen Cade?” she asked, partly hoping that he would say that Cade was stuck in a meeting or that he was busy with alpha work.
“No dear. He had left early. He said he had a meeting to attend.” He answered.
“Oh. Ok.” It was obvious that she was upset. “Is it a meeting related to pack matters?” she asked, still hoping that she would get a good answer.
“No. I don’t think so. Because if it was important, he would tell us. I think he was meeting a friend or something.” His answer made her heart sink.
“Ok. Good night dad. I love you.” She replied, her eyes now stinging with tears. She didn’t wait for a reply from her father and ended the call. Disturbing thoughts started to cross her mind.
What was going on? Who was he going to meet? She wanted to know. She had to know. She had the right to. After all, she bore his mark. It was not as strong as the mark shared between true mates but still, it was his mark and he carried her mark. They had vowed to be there for each other no matter what. Feeling the tears suddenly threaten to roll out of her eyes, she blinked to prevent her makeup from getting ruined. She didn’t want her hard work to go to waste.
“Maybe he is planning a surprise. Yeah. Maybe he is meeting someone to get a gift for me.” She muttered to herself and giggled.
“Yes. That must be it. He will be back soon. I’m worrying for no reason.” Giggling and trying to reassure herself, she lied down on the mattress and tried to play some games on her phone. But soon, she started to feel drowsy. After all, she was exhausted. It was not long before she had no choice except to give in and let her mind shut down as she dozed off to dreamland.
She woke up to the sound of someone dropping something.
“Shit.” Cade hissed.
“Cade?” Hailey yawned and checked the time. “What? It is 3am already?” she gasped I utter surprise. Her mouth hung open and sleep forgotten she stared at him aghast.
“Why? Cade why are you so late?” she demanded an explanation.
“Nothing.” He replied in a bored tone.
“Cade.” She warned. “How could you? Don’t you remember what day today is?” she asked, still hoping for a positive reply.
“Hmm?” he just hummed and went to change in to his shorts. When he returned shirtless, Hailey felt her mouth water as she eyed his well toned and biceps. Smirking and putting what had happened aside she went and wrapped her cold arms around his bare torso. She felt her need for him throbbing in between her legs. After all, it had been too long since he last touched her intimately.
“Hailey. I’m tired.” He scowled and removed her hands as he made way to the bed. Surprised by the change in him, she gaped at him.
“Cade! I need to know what is going on.” She wanted to know. But all what he did was lie down and ignore her completely.
“Cade!” she gasped, now tears streaming down her cheeks. “Please….tell me. Is it something I did? Is it something you are not happy of?” she begged for an explanation. But when he chose to give a deaf ear, she shook him until he finally snapped at her.
“Damn it Hailey. I said I’m tired. Why can’t you understand?” he growled at her. Startled, she stepped back whimpering in defeat. Never in her life had anyone scolded her like that. In fact, she had anything and everything she demanded.
But this time, she had to face the feeling of being rejected. Heart broken and dejected, she walked to the bathroom and check her reflection. Taking out cotton swab soaked in makeup remover, she wiped off her makeup. Her heart continued to weep, still not understanding what could have possibly gone wrong. Suddenly one thing started to bother her. The b***d rushed in he veins in anger and frustration.
Did he replace his mate?
