Rewriting My Heart's Fate (Ethan and Evelyn) -

Ethan's determination and conviction moved me but also brought me exasperation.
In this battle, there might be no gunpowder involved, but every person's decision was of utmost importance. As for me, I needed to build myself a solid defense line.
"I thank you for your thought, but please allow me to face all of these my way." My sorrowful ending was already written for me since I pestered him shamelessly in the beginning.
"As for us, keeping our distance from each other is probably the best way for us to protect each other." I took a deep breath and tried to sound as calm and determined as possible. He looked intently at me, an unknown emotion flashed in his eyes, which eventually turned into nothing but a helpless sigh.
Our conversation ended just like that. We probably didn't part on good terms, or it could be that we both knew that we couldn't salvage anything between us.
Even if he was back in Yardville, he couldn't change anything while I watched all of these unfold quietly.
The rest of the things were done pretty smoothly. Kevin and I got a private investigator and we hired him to help us replace out what Jack had all those years ago.
There was surely still some leftover stock at Wiley Group but I had to know the secrets they held.
The private investigator was a middle-aged man with sharp, steely eyes like he could pry into one's deepest, darkest secrets with one look. His name was Howard Little.
He took over the information we gave him, read through it solemnly, and nodded his head, telling us that he would give it his all.
Howard's professionalism and wariness assured us, at least in investigating these baseless, questionable mysteries, that we would get a hint of direction.
"According to the clues you've
provided, Ms Wiley, Mr. Somerson, I'll be starting my investigation from the business connections, affiliates, and relationships Mr. Jack Wiley was once involved with." Howard jotted on his notepad quickly as he spoke. He seemed to be very professional.
"However, these would probably take some time since it wouldn't be easy to have fo dig out secrets from years ago."
We nodded understandably. We knew that this path wouldn't be an easy one. But since we have decided to unveil the truth, there was no backing down.
After that, Kevin and I worked separately with him continuing to work on designing whereas I continued to keep close contact with Howard so we knew the progress of the investigation at all times. One evening, Howard invited me to meet at a café..
"I found it. At that time, Jack had one collaboration with Mr. Johnson. They were doing art selling together.
"I've only managed to replace some information regarding Mr. Johnson but if you would like to know what exactly happened, you need to personally visit Mr. Johnson."
My heart constricted after hearing
that. Mr Johnson was a familiar, yet unfamiliar name to me. From what remember, Jack had more
interactions with him in the past, but the details are all very fuzzy
I took the information from Howard and flipped through it quickly, trying to replace more clues.
"Where's Mr. Johnson now? Is he willing to cooperate with the investigation?" I asked anxiously, every word I said exposed how anxious I felt inside.
Howard was silent for a moment. Subtle hesitation fleeted across his eyes.
"Mr. Johnson now stays out of the public's eye in a villa on the outskirts of town, living a simple life. I don't know if he would be willing to cooperate. However, I can arrange for you to meet him once, but you'll have to work for the outcome yourself."
