Saving Kinsley
Break My Heart Again

Kinsley's P.O.V

Out of the corner of my eye I watched as Vivi and Noah were kicked to the ground. With a revolver held, aiming directly at the back of their heads. I could smell the silver from here. Silver or wolfsbane, a shifter's weakness. If the two were combined, it'd make for deadly consequences. This was an execution, The Alpha would make sure no one survived this.

I shut my eyes.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

I had seconds to decide which path I would take. I submit to the Alpha and fulfil what ever vile plan he concocted, or, I officially reject Dakota and free the three of us.

You have to do this, to save us all. There is no other way. A moment of clarity washed over my senses, everything inside had gone silent. The voice, wasn't lashing out. Ember remained quiet, waiting.

Opening my eyes, I could feel my heartbeat slow. I looked directly at Dakota, and he was looking at the Alpha.

"I-"

You can do this.

"I Kinsley Marshall, reject you Dakota Warren, future alpha as my mate." Before the emotional impact hit, I watched as the Alphas eyes snapped to me. "How the hell-"

"I Dakota Warren, future Alpha of Sallow pack, accept your rejection as my mate." Dakota tackled His father to the ground, buying us time as he battled the pain warring inside, clearly written on his face. Noah, quick as lightning, was up and knocking the revolvers from the enforcers behind them. Snapping their necks, to make sure we wouldn't be stopped.

Vivi scrambled her way towards me, her eyes wide in a panic.

I could feel the cool metal against my head, burning at my scalp from the touch. "Move and I'll blow your brains all over them."

A laugh slipped from my lips, "Do it. I have nothing to lose, not anymore. Have you ever faced off with someone who has nothing to fight for but self-preservation?" I ran my tongue along my lip, so many emotions surging forward: Heartbreak, fear, anxiety for Vivi and Noah. But it was also chased with thrill, my body was humming to shed blood. Ember was eager for the challenge. A natural reaction for the beast within.

I could hear the hammer click into place, But he wasn't quick enough. I reached behind me, yanking with force over my head. The enforcer was now in front of me, the revolver lay between us.

His eyes snapped to the weapon.

Instead, he chose to shift, snarling and charging at me.

I shifted into my own wolf, dropping to my belly as the wolf aimed to strike high. I leaped upwards, my jaws landing at the neck and clamping down with a quick twist. With the tang of blood filling my mouth, I dropped the body to the ground and threw my head back into a bone-deep howl.

Vivi and Noah returned my howl and raced for the closest border, and I was hot on their heels. I couldn't resist turning back and glancing at Dakota, he was still facing off his own Father. Fists and blood flying, but I could see the emotion flittering in his eyes. The old me, desperate to soothe the pain, another part of me finally feeling the true freedom. As well as emptiness. But that emptiness I was familiarized with, I've lived a lifetime with it. And I invited it in, like an old friend.

The Alpha wouldn't win this one, not with what Dakota had to fight for.

He lost his mate, again.

I surged forward into the woods, Noah was leading with Vivi just paces behind him and I brought up the rear.

Passing over the border, a shiver went down my spine, both Vivi and Noah began to whimper but pushed on further. It was normal for wolves leaving a pack to experience that when they left without the Alpha's consent. At least, that's what I've read. Seeing it first hand, was interesting. Pack ties, so deeply intertwined within a shifter.

It was well into the night when we stopped, making sure we hadn't been followed. It was only a matter of time before The Alpha sent enforcers out to collect us if anything happened to Dakota. But we planned to be long gone by then.

Noah shifted back first, "Rest for a few minutes, then we move. It isn't safe out here, we have the enforcers as well as any Rogues to contend with."

My fur ruffled at that, shit I had forgotten about rogue wolves. Fuck.

I fell to my belly, to rest. It was safer in wolf form out here, Noah had already shifted back. But he didn't rest. He was perched, facing the direction we were running from. Looking and listening.

Noah's snout nudged me a few minutes later and we were running through the sparse woods again.

We stopped here and there throughout the night, never anything longer than a few minutes or to stop for water at a river or any source we could replace along the way.

Dawn was breaking over the horizon now, the woods becoming more alive by the second. I noticed Vivi starting to slag behind and I let out a yip and shifted back to my human form.

"We need to stop, Vivi can't go any further."

As soon as I said that, Vivi collapsed to the ground with sharp breaths escaping her. She shifted soon after, "I- I just need five minutes." She could barely get a breath in between words.

Noah shifted back, "Kinz is right you need rest. But we need to keep moving. Climb on my back, I'll carry you." He said as he crouched down next to Vivi, brushing her hair out of her face.

I helped Vivi onto Noah's back after he shifted, we had hours at best before he collapsed soon too.

The sun was mid sky, at least Noon by now when Noah collapsed from exhaustion. I shifted back, "We stop a few hours here. I haven't heard anything since we left pack territory. We should be safe for now, I'll stand watch."

Noah grunted and his eyes instantly fell shut, along with Vivi.

I circled the two, never taking my eyes off of the lightly wooded area. I listened to everything. The only thing within earshot was chirping birds, running water, and light scurries of the smaller creatures that occupied the woods.

Noah stirred awake some hours later, nudging Vivi awake. Both of them stretched and got up, Noah threw his head in one direction silently communicating where to go since we didn't have any form of a mind link established. He could talk to Vivi, but I was left to my own thoughts.

It's not so bad, why would they want to be in that murderous head of yours anyway?

I shook the voice from my head, ignoring its cruel tormenting words. As soon as we found somewhere safe, I'd have to learn what I could about elemental wolves because there is no way that voice is a manifestation of my own guilt. It seemed to have a mind of its own as if it were a separate entity from my own being.
