Selling Myself To The Alpha -
Chapter 117
Liana
POV
"Now I feel terrible," I admit softly. "I grew up with a poor excuse for a mother, but at least I still had my dad. That child had no dad and goddess knows what kind of mother."
"Yeah," Adele agrees. "One of the things I love about Luther is his caring soul. He's much more sensitive and compassionate than me. I understand his father did a bad thing, but I don't think it would've bothered me so much that I swore off my family and alphas." "You and Luther grew up with the perfect family," I point out. "It's unimaginable that your parents are flawed. But Luther's been disillusioned. Updated by Ebookex.com visit for more novels. Not only that, but a child also out there had to pay the price for what his parents did. Believe me, very few things can ruin your life like the betrayal of a loved one. You can't control what you feel, and it takes time to come to terms with it. Luther has been burying this deep and obviously hasn't dealt with it."
"I'm going after him," Adele stands up. "He needs to know I'm here for him."
"Good evening, Alpha," a man joins us, and I turn to him.
A shiver runs up my spine when I look at him. Tall, dark and devilishly handsome. His full lips are curled into a smile, but it is his brown eyes that keep me mesmerised. Cold, hard and deadly.
"I'm Alpha Philip," he extends his hand to Adele, and she accepts. "It's an honour to meet such a lovely lady as yourself."
Axel POV
"Hey, man, wait up," I call after Luther as he storms past me, but he keeps on walking.
I quickly get up and follow him.
"Talk to me," I say as I fall in next to him.
"There's nothing to talk about," he grunts. "I told Adele the truth. The funny thing is, I thought she would think less of me for what my parents have done. Turns out, she figures it's not that bad." "Because it didn't happen to her," I reason.
"I feel like a fool for thinking it's a big deal," Luther stops dead in his tracks and looks at me. "Why am I the only one who cares about the child?"
"You're not a fool," I say seriously. "And the child is important. For you it's personal, but Adele must've expected worse. You didn't tell her about it, and you told her out of the blue at the last moment about this. She had twenty-four hours for her imagination to run wild and create the worst-case scenarios."
"I just wish I knew why," Luther groans painfully. "Why is it affecting me so much that I'm ruining the best thing that has ever happened to me?"
"Because you feel guilty," I rest my hand compassionately on his shoulder. "You grew up with both your parents and all your needs were met. You feel guilty that your sibling didn't have the same and he or she deserved it the same way you did. It wasn't your fault, Luther. There was nothing you could've done to help that child. You were only six.
You're allowed to be happy. There's no need to punish yourself because you feel guilty for what your parents have done."
"The irony is that I know that," he smiles wryly. "But my heart doesn't agree. It feels wrong to move into any alpha house."
"By that argument, we should all wander around with guilt," I say sympathetically. "Each and every person on this earth, have an ancestor that f*vcked up one way or another.
Feeling guilty about it is not going to solve anything or help them. All you can do is to not repeat their mistakes."
"I...." Luther stops midsentence and starts frowning. "Who's that jackass drooling over my mate?"
I turn around and look at where he is staring.
"Alpha Philip," uneasiness settles in my gut. "He is one of Jack's business partners."
"Do you think we should go over there?" Luther grunts.
"I think we should've been there already," I growl and start walking towards them.
Luther POV
If I never had the urge to kick myself before, I sure as f*ck have it now. I do not like the way Philip is looking at Adele.
If it were not for my guilt, I would have been married to Adele now and she would have been marked. Now this p*****t is undressing her with his eyes right in front of Liana. Philip cannot be older than twenty-five and I can tell he is aware of the effect he has on the opposite s*x. Now he is using his charm on my mate and I do not like it one bit. "Good evening, Philip," Axel greets and the a*****e manages to tear his eyes away from Adele long enough to look at him. "It's been a while."
He looks at me and Axel for a moment with irritation.
"Not long enough," he says jovially but his smile does not reach his eyes. "Interesting turn of events at Moonstone. A guard turning alpha. That's unheard of."
Nobody misses the underlying insult of Adele's origin. I want to set him straight but I bite my tongue. I do not want to say or do anything that could undermine Adele's authority. I am not an alpha and being disrespectful towards him will only emphasise his words. "Lineage means s*it if you can't behave," Axel smirks confidently. "Have you met my lovely wife and Luna?"
"I was about to introduce myself before you interrupted,"
Philip smiles at Liana.
"I'm Luther," I manage to smile politely as I stand next to Adele, and she smiles lovingly at me when I take her hand." Axel's cousin and Alpha Adele's mate."
"Mate?" Philip raises his eyebrows. "No offence, but if she was my mate, she would've been marked by now."
"Duly noted," I return his false friendliness. I would much rather stick a fork in his throat, but I control my anger.
"So, it's safe to assume that you'll be handling the business side of the end?" Philip asks me and completely ignores the women, even though they are in higher ranks than me." I mean, if you're Axel's cousin, you have much more experience than Adele." "Oh, no," I smile sarcastically. "I'm the first lady and paint pretty pictures."
My answer aggravates and confuses him at the same time.
"That would be my department," Axel intervenes before Philip can say anything. "Certainly, you must be aware that Jack's company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Especially when I ended our contract with him. I control Jack's company now and it will be rebranded."
"You must be joking?" Philip growls.
"Does it look like were laughing?" Adele asks and I can sense her irritation.
"But how will your pack survive?" Philip looks at her. "
Without that income, the alpha house will have no money.
How are you going to provide for your people?"
"I said I control the company," Axel replies. "I didn't say I own it."
"Interesting," Philip nods. "I..."
"Spare yourself the agony," Adele cuts him off. "You're only concerned about how this is going to affect your business."
Proudly, I look at her. She might not have the upbringing other alphas had, but she caught on quickly. And she is no pushover.
"I'm an Alpha," Philip glares at Adele. "And it's in my pack's best interest to know."
"Then you should only know not to invest all your eggs in one basket," Adele smirks.
"Especially with the price of eggs these days," Liana winks at Adele and I look away to shield my amusement.
"What?" Philip frowns at her.
"Oh, you know," Liana shrugs nonchalantly. "With the price of food these days."
"I don't understand," Philip says irritated.
"No, you wouldn't," Liana stands up. "Because you think women are only useful for breeding. It must be unimaginable for you to phantom that we are worth more than cooking and baring your children. You stride over here, all confident and charming and think you'll have the upper hand because Adele is a woman. What does a female know of running a pack? It's a man's job, right? You didn't even think she would pick up on the slight insult that she's not a born alpha. Unfortunately for you, I'm not as well-mannered as Adele. And you, alpha Philip, are a man who reeks of deception."
"Axel, I pity you," Philip is white in the face when he looks at Axel. "The goddess must really hate you to mare you with her."
"On the contrary," Axel smiles lovingly at Liana and drapes his arm protectively around Liana's shoulders. "I replace her honesty refreshing."
"I don't care about your opinion of me," Liana lifts her chin.
"But in the future, don't underestimate your opponent because of their gender."
"It was nice seeing you again," Axel nods in Philip's direction before leading Liana away.
"You'll have to excuse us as well," I smile at Philip and pull Adele out of her chair and into my arms. "My mate and I need to discuss our wedding date."
