Millie once again witnessed Gloria’s unwavering decisiveness. Gloria’s authoritative nature showedno mercy to those she disliked.
This made Millie realize that it was becoming increasingly challenging for Joanna to be accepted bythe Greer family. Over the years, she failed to gain the Greers‘ favor, instead causing them to hateher more.
Joanna lowered her head and asked gently, “Mrs. Greer, what exactly have I done to upset you?Why do you continue to single me out?”
Instead of waiting for Gloria’s response, she continued aggrievedly, “What’s wrong with me likingWin? He’s single now, and so am I. Don’t I deserve the chance to pursue him? Besides…”
Gloria just stared at her. Joanna wanted to speak further, but she immediately fell silent when shenoticed Millie out of the corner of her eye.
“Besides, what?” Gloria waited patiently for her next words, but she remained silent.
“Mom, please don’t make things difficult for Jo. Let her go back,” Winston said calmly.
Joanna couldn’t help but look at Winston. “Win, are you hoping for me to leave as well?”
“It’s really inconvenient for you to be here. You should go back first,” Winston replied calmly in ahushed
tone.
Joanna felt disheartened by what he had just said. “Is it because Millie is here?”
Millie gazed at the two of them, feeling powerless. She was reluctant to get involved. Winstonwouldn’t drive Joanna away just because she was here.
He certainly didn’t want Joanna and Gloria to clash. One was his unforgettable first love, and theother was his mother. He was caught in the middle, unable to take sides.
“Joanna,” Winston called out Joanna unhappily.
Joanna was aware that Winston was feeling unwell, and she was determined not to let him harborany negative feelings toward her. Therefore, she nodded with a sense of grievance. “Alright, I’mleaving now. I will…”
She glanced at Gloria before completing her sentence. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Win.”
Gloria stared at Joanna without a word. As Joanna was about to leave, Gloria said, “I’ll walk youout.”
Joanna felt uneasy.
After a brief silence, Winston said, “Mom, please don’t go too far.”
Gloria glanced at him and left with Joanna. The ward became quiet. Millie turned and also wantedto leave, but she heard him ask, “What do you mean by ‘we’re even‘?”
He only caught the second half of what she said to him before she fainted. Millie paused, her eyesfixed on Winston.
His face remained pale, his voice hoarse as he spoke. He locked eyes with her, his gaze filled withintensity. At that moment, he had a lot of questions in mind for Millie.

Millie stood at the end of the bed, gazing at him with an unusually serene expression. If she were tospeak, it would only be to express a moment of gratitude. She responded nonchalantly, “Nothing.”
Winston noticed her distant attitude and how she treated him as if he were a stranger. Unable tohold back, he asked, “In such a dangerous situation, why would you truly choose death over lettingme save you? Why?”
“I would be fine,” Millie replied calmly.
Winston sneered at her answer. He suppressed his anger and frowned. “Millie, you’ve beenkidnapped! That kidnapper is a lunatic. How could you be so sure that nothing would happen toyou?
“Your safety is the top priority. Have you ever considered if you fell from the building, you-” Hesuddenly stopped speaking.
The ward was remarkably silent, filled only with the sound of his heavy breathing.
Millie looked at him and could sense the anxiety in his tone. Their eyes met, and it was clear thatWinston had something important to say, though he hesitated to finish.
