Silly Bride novel (Winnie and Xavier) -
Chapter 91
"Winnie is a simpleton, Grandpa. Her words are completely untrustworthy and contradictory. Even if we go to court, a simpleton's words are inadmissible as evidence."
Zyon added, trying his best to discredit Winnie, "You can't be considering to believe a simpleton over your own grandson, can you, Grandpa?"
"How is that possible?" Rufus frowned. "Do I look like I'm senile? You were the one to have found Winnie, Louis. Were you already in cohorts with her before you brought her back to me?"
"No, Mr. Fairchild! I swear that we are not conspiring. Zyon did pay off the private investigator."
"All right. Bring the private investigator to me," Rufus said sternly. "I wish to interrogate him myself."
"Er... He disappeared. I cannot contact him, but I will locate him."
"Pfft!" Zyon chortled. "You can't produce any evidence, yet you're accusing me. How did you become the assistant to the CEO of Fairchild Corporation with brains like yours? You're not welcome here. Get lost!" "Watch yourself. You will get what's coming one of these days. I will make a police report and have you sued!" At that, Louis turned around and marched out.
Winnie hurried after him. "You left me behind, Louis. I came with you."
Jacinta, too, ran after her granddaughter.
"Hah!" Zyon laughed. "You see, Grandpa? The simpleton said they came together. They have planned to frame me from the start."
After the trio exited, only Josiah and the two Fairchilds remained behind in the room.
Josiah's expression turned grim.
Zyon cast him a disdainful glance. "What is it, Dr. Houghton? Are you unhappy because my grandfather didn't believe your lies?"
Josiah adjusted his spectacles. "I think the simpleton is telling the truth, Mr. Fairchild."
"Enough, Josiah. I know you and Zyon have always been at odds, and it ends today. Never have me listen to the rumors you concoct against the Fairchilds again. All right, you may go. I don't need you here anymore."
"Did you hear that?" Zyon was beside himself with glee. "You're asked to leave!"
"All right, I'm going."
Rufus frowned as soon as the door to the ward closed. "Tell me the truth, Zyon. Is what Louis and Winnie said true?"
"Of course, it isn't true, Grandpa! How would I know Xavier would go to sea in the middle of the night to look for somebody? The claims of me wanting to kill that stupid woman Winnie is even more ludicrous. I have no motive to do so."
"All right. Remember, you represent the Fairchild family now. There cannot be any taint on your reputation."
"You've finally acknowledged me, Grandpa. Don't worry. I will not let you down."
Left forgotten in Josiah's office, the oatmeal Winnie had brought became his lunch.
"You played your part well today, Mr. Tanser," Josiah gushed as he ate. "I noticed the veins on your forehead bulging during your argument with Zyon. It was very convincing."
Rufus played his part well, too. From the looks of it, Zyon took the bait. He probably thinks that Rufus would hand Fairchild Corporation in its entirety over to him.
"Yes. It looks like we've managed to deceive him this time," Louis declared. "Now, I shall bring Mrs. Fairchild to lodge a report. I must trouble you, Dr. Houghton, to look after Old Mr. Fairchild. I fear that Zyon will do him harm."
"Don't worry, I will."
Louis lodged the report quickly, telling the authorities that Zyon conspired to murder Xavier and Winnie.
As Xavier was nowhere to be found, it was, at that moment, impossible to conduct an investigation.
But the reappearance of Winnie, a formerly missing person, was in accordance with the procedure.
As a result, the people involved were quickly brought to the police station.
While Zyon and Yulissa were very calm, Kylie was flustered and nearly uttered something she was not supposed to during the interrogation.
As the police did not replace any discrepancies in Winnie's disappearance, there had hardly been any progress aside from her own testimony. Due to her condition, however, her testimony was unusable.
In other words, unless they could produce more evidence, the case would otherwise not move forward.
Back in her simpleton persona, Winnie appeared panicked as she watched Zyon and his two cohorts about to walk away scot-free.
She pointed at them and said to Liam, the officer in charge of their case, "Arrest them! They're the bad guys who want to kill me!"
Zyon was unperturbed. "The police have no way of replaceing us guilty, dumb*ss. Save your energy."
Winnie began sobbing. "It's them! They did it!"
Kylie, the recipient of her half-sister's accusatory finger, wanted nothing more than to kill her again.
This stupid b*tch not only survived tumbling down such a tall mountain, but she even made it back without a scratch! Even worse, she dares to lodge a police report! If only she knew what I was doing before being brought over by the police! I was socializing with celebrities in the industry. The disapproving looks they gave me are something I will never forget. It's all the stupid b*tch's fault! I wouldn't have been embarrassed before the celebrities if she hadn't lodged a report! Godd*mn Winnie!
Kylie took a deep breath and pointed back at Winnie. "Don't waste the police's resources if you have no proof. Go home and play with your Peppa Pig."
Ignoring her, Winnie pouted and shook Liam's arm vigorously. "Arrest her."
Liam appeared helpless. "Ms. Garland is right, Mrs. Fairchild. You must have proof. According to the surveillance footage that night, however, you never did appear at the back of the mountain. You left the Fairchild residence in a car."
"I was on the mountain. I have proof!" Winnie leaped up suddenly and smacked her wrist. "I wore something on my hand. Handsome gave it to me, but it broke on the mountain when Kiki pushed me." Everybody at the scene was taken aback by Winnie's words.
Zyon and Yulissa glanced meaningfully at Kylie in unison, who quickly recalled the incident at Winnie's new accusation.
During their scuffle, Kylie had indeed tugged a bead from Winnie's hand, but she threw it away atop the mountain. Could that tiny bead be used as evidence?
"I can prove the existence of that accessory," Louis quickly added as he produced his phone. "It was a gift Mr. Xavier had me buy for Mrs. Fairchild. Many people can attest to that. Here is a photograph of that jewelry."
Liam nodded. "All right. Our prior decision can be overruled if we can locate this item."
Kylie was stunned.
Zyon knew from her reaction that Winnie was telling the truth. Hastily, he grabbed her arm and marched out to interrogate her outside the precinct.
"What jewelry? Did you really break it? Tell me!"
Kylie nodded. "Yes. I had a bead in my hand then, and I threw it away. It was dark at that time. I could not see what material it was made of. Pearl? Jade? Jasper? Or was it agate? Ruby? Or sapphire? I truly do not know what material it was. What do we do? Will my fingerprints be on it?"
"Idiot!"
Zyon was about to lose his temper when Winnie and the others emerged.
Winnie deliberately stopped when she passed Kylie to smile. "You're done for, Kiki!" Spread the love
