Sold To The Billionaire Alpha -
Chapter 21
Orion’s POV
Her scent turned my world upside down and inside out. I had never wanted anyone more. I had never felt such a sense of maddening urgency. I had to replace the source of the scent immediately less I be driven insane by the intoxicating aroma. I followed her scent. It was floral and sweet like a picnic of pastries in a field of flowers. The aroma was distinctly feminine. There was no hard edge to it. It was innocent somehow not seductive. I found her easily.
She was human. I knew she would be. The smell had a fragility to it. I thought I knew myself. I thought I was the type of Alpha to shun a weak mate, a human no less. What could be weaker? Yet here I was trailing several yards behind the human girl so as not to frighten her. She drew me in like a moth to a flame and she did not even know I existed yet. She was petite. A long curtain of dark brown ringlets fell behind her. She was dressed in scrubs. I could tell she had come from the human hospital just a street away. She had probably just finished her shift. She answered her phone. A male’s voice was on the other end. My inner wolf snarled ferociously. He was jealous beyond reason.
“Doc, did you get the CT scan approved by the radiologist on call?” Asked the male voice.
She was a doctor, quite young though.
“Yes Doc, I did,” she answered. Her voice showed no signs of great interest in the male she spoke to. I breathed an silent sigh of relief.
“With contrast?” Added the other doctor.
“Yes, of course, he’ll do it without contrast first and if he sees a lesion, he’ll repeat it right away with contrast as he’s already approved the contrast,” she said, her voice melodious but weary.
“Ok, thanks,” said the other Doctor.
“Yeah, no problem,” she said.
“Drive safe!” He added.
“Yep, thanks,” she said brightly.
She hung up. Her colleague seemed to think she was driving home but here she was, walking home in the dark. I felt so fiercely protective of her and I had not seen her face yet. She had not turned around. She glanced behind her suddenly and my heart almost stopped. I ducked behind a wall at werewolf speed, my heart racing. I peaked out a bit. Her large brown eyes surveyed the street briefly and nervously. She had a small mouth with full lips and a heart-shaped face. Her eyelashes were thick and long, curling upwards. She had perfectly arched eyebrows and a button nose. She was effortlessly beautiful. A chilly breeze tousled her long tresses causing her scent to waft towards me. I shivered. I was transfixed by her.
Thankfully it was not me she had glanced back at. She had been looking at another man. He was burly for a human with dark hair and dark circles under his watery blue eyes. His straggly brown hair was scraped into a short ponytail. He wore a black trench coat, never a good sign. She quickened her pace and so did the man. I wanted to rip him limb from limb. He was frightening her. Her heart rate was steadily speeding up. I tailed both of them. The girl broke into a run and the man ran after her or at least he tried to do that. The girl dashed down the road and before the fiend could take another step I had zoomed forwards, grabbed him by the scruff of his coat and sped into an alleyway with him. I gripped the coat, holding him up and against the wall.
“What were you doing following that girl?” I snarled, more animal than man in that moment.
“She’s all yours. I’ll take the next one!” Offered the man.
Revolting.
“What do you mean to do?” I growled.
“I…look…don’t kill me! Let’s make a deal!” Suggested the man.
“You have nothing I want.” I said gruffly.
The man swung his leg out suddenly, meaning to kick me in the torso. His boot connected with my torso. For a moment, he looked triumphant but then he realised I had not reacted to the hit. He was weak. He was perverted. He did not deserve mercy.
“We can share her…” began the disgusting man but I would hear no more of this.
I snapped his neck mid-sentence. He deserved to suffer but I did not have time and I could not risk losing sight of my mate. I threw him in a nearby dumpster.
I followed my mate all the way to her home, to a small apartment building. She lived upstairs in a small studio apartment. I crouched on the ledge of one of her windows and peered in.
She was getting ready for bed. I forced myself to look away when she disrobed. I heard the sound of running water. She was taking a shower. I sighed, wishing I was showering with her, shampooing her hair and massaging her aching limbs after a long day.
She was too tired to make herself anything to eat though I could hear her stomach grumble. She ate cereal straight from a box. I chuckled softly to myself. It dawned on me that my little mate should really get some curtains. There were several windows providing views inside but only if one stood on a narrow window ledge.
Finally, she turned off the light. Darkness consuming the scene. With my eyesight, I could still see her clearly as she turned on small nightlight and crawled under the covers without me. I would give anything to be in the apartment, the room, the bed, her. I shivered with delight at the mere thought of claiming her, mating her and marking her. I would gift her immortality through my mark. I listened as her breathing and heart rate slowed, becoming even. My everything was falling asleep without me.
I stayed there, losing track of time. A vibration alerted me. Perseus was calling. I answered in hushed tones.
“What, brother?” I whispered fiercely.
“I’m back in Gregoire and you’re not here! I arranged with the Caros to have Rose’s family debt paid off…”
“Again,” I added, annoyed.
“Yeah, we talked about that already and you gave the ok…”
“I know, I know,” I said softly, glancing at my Luna sleeping soundly within the small apartment, hoping she would not stir. I had no idea how to handle a human mate. My family’s customs did not leave much room for extensive courting and wooing. It was a given that your mate should accept her fate as yours. I doubted my human mate would think this way. She was a doctor. She cared for herself. She might be wilful. Perseus and I had arranged things for Rose and her family regarding paying off their debt in exchange for Rose’s hand in marriage. Could my little human’s family be bargained with in this manner? I remembered Sally and Shonda and the fancy car Uber man. I remembered how their faces had been stunned at the sight of so much money. Humans and werewolves were probably more alike than I thought. I wondered if my Luna’s parents needed any help. She certainly was not wealthy despite a good job. Why was that? Debt, maybe. A crazy spending habit. She could blow through all my cash and max out my cards if she wanted. I smirked to myself, thinking about taking her shopping. I wanted to her to be dazzled just like the humans I had met tonight had been.
“You’re at the Caro House?” I asked.
“No, brother, I am with Mary and her friend…what’s her name again?” Perseus pondered.
“Her name is also Mary,” I said dismissively.
“Meet me at the Caro House if you like so I can explain my news one time,” I said, glancing back at my mate longingly before I turned to leave.
I jumped from the window sill and landed lightly on my feet on the pavement below.
“At this hour? Surely it can wait till morning,” said Perseus, surprised.
“It cannot wait,” I said. I could already feel the mate bond affecting me. My wolf was obsessive. He was growling and snarling within because we were going in the opposite direction as our mate. I noted the apartment number, the number of the apartment building and the street. I would give the address to the Caros so they could start collecting information.
“I cannot wait,” I said more to myself than to Perseus as thoughts of this human girl consumed me.
