“I have to go get Jaack. Something weird is going on here,” muttered Ellie.

I assumed she was referring to the tree branch bursting through the ceiling.

“Have fun with your monster baby! Congratulations!” She said snidely.

I was livid even though said pregnancy was fabricated but I thought of something that might help me.

“That’s assuming Orion is the father,” I said nonchalantly.

“Excuse me,” she hissed.

I shrugged.

“Jaack and I only broke up about three months ago,” I said snidely. “You do the math!”

“Then you would be showing!” She yelled so viciously she sent spit flying.

Ew!

“I’m the doctor here not you,” I shouted back. “Women start to show around four to five months! Especially primigravida!”

“What?!” She asked, scowling.

“Women who are pregnant for the very first time are called primigravida,” I said, folding my arms and fixing her with a sneer.

Obviously, I was not pregnant for Jaack or even Orion for that matter. I had not had s*x with Jaack in a lot longer than three months. We had been estranged for a few weeks after our last fight before I had officially ended it over the phone because he was too volatile to break-up with in person. Also, our relationship and s*x life together had been nothing like me and Orion. Orion and I would have s*x more times in a week than my ex and I would have in a year. I used to do and say just about anything to get out of s*x with my ex. Once a month or preferably less was more than enough with my ex. I hated giving my body to someone who had injured it. I shuddered just thinking about it.

Either way, my ex used to go missing for prolonged periods of time. It made sense now. He was probably consorting with other werewolf hunters during those absences. He once all but disappeared for six weeks straight. I had almost ended it back then but he would keep sending me ridiculous mushy texts everyday claiming he was so busy and he would drive down to my side of the island soon.

I should have been more suspicious. I supposed there was no way I could have guessed all of this. I did not even know I was half-werewolf back then. I had assumed Jaack had been doing the slow fade, a soft gradual form of ghosting where someone reduced the time spent together bit by bit down to nought. I had genuinely wanted him gone but had been too afraid to end it at first. Thus, his long periods of absence had given me some relief if truth be told.

On the other hand, when it came to Orion, I would probably whither and die if he went missing for so much as three days far less six weeks. The longest we had been apart had been my stint in the dungeon.

I was so lost in thought comparing my ex to Orion that I had not noticed that dumb girl nearing my cell. She clutched the bars and stared at me.

“If you honestly think you can guilt Jaack into getting back with you with that baby, then you’re sadly mistaken!” She said menacingly.

I snorted with laughter.

“Are you hearing yourself?” I asked incredulously. “I just told you Orion is a King and a Billionaire!” And a sweet guy who actually loved me, not that she could relate to those things with how my ex had brainwashed her.

I reminded myself that I had been brainwashed in the past too. I had even been obsessed with keeping my ex at one point during the beginning of our relationship. That was until I had had enough.

“Also, I broke up with Jaack!” I said.

“He said it was mutual!” She snapped.

“Of course, he would say that!” I said, rolling my eyes.

“I plan on telling Orion this baby is his even if it isn’t so you should let me go,” I said.

“Why?” She asked.

“Jaack really wants a son!” I said pointedly.

“He won’t want a son who is part werewolf obviously!” She said but she looked a little worried and sounded like she was trying to convince herself.

“Yes, he would! A part werewolf son who is a werewolf hunter would be a huge asset! He could lead Jaack to dozens and dozens of wolves as he would be welcomed into their inner circles easily! He would be stronger than a human and better able to fight and thus kill your targets! He would be the best werewolf hunter ever!” I concluded, almost buying my own bullshit.

She looked horrified.

“Haven’t you ever seen Blade? He was half vampire and the best vampire hunter because he was half,” I reasoned, spewing more crap.

Blade had been a good movie though, in my opinion. I kind of had a thing for Wesley Snipes. I would never tell Orion that though.

“So when Jaack realises I could give him the best werewolf hunter there ever was for a son, he will want me back,” I said simply, hoping she would eat this up.

It was nonsense but it was somewhat plausible nonsense and hopefully, it was just enough to inject a teeny tiny vial of doubt into the ebb and flow of things.

“If you try to take Jaack, I’ll kill you,” she hissed.

Bingo!

“If you kill me before you trap Orion, Jaack will kill you,” I retorted, keeping my tone seemingly calm even though half of me wanted to cry and the other half wanted to laugh.

“He would never kill me,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“Oh, yeah, you’re right, he would just put you in the hospital! My bad!” I said snidely.

Her jaw dropped. Mission accomplished. Her eyes were shifty. I leant back against the wall and folded my arms and crossed my legs. It did not matter if she went to Jaack and he promptly told her we had been in an almost sexless relationship. All I needed was that tiny bit of doubt. My maternal grandmother had been religious. She would talk about having faith the size of a mustard seed and how that was enough to move mountains. Well, conversely, a seed of doubt was sadly enough to sink a relationship and I was counting on providing a whole damn tree of doubt if necessary.

“Stop it!” Shrieked Ellie, making me jump.

“What’s your problem?” I asked, affronted.

“You’re doing that, aren’t you?” Whispered Ellie.

“Doing what?” I asked, confused.

“Don’t play games with me! You freak!” Screeched Ellie.

I rolled my eyes. She was watching something on a monitor facing away from me.

“Well, go ahead and use your freaky powers all you want!” She said decisively. “That’s just more money for me and my man when we harvest,” she said, rolling her neck.

Ugh, she was so annoying. Harvest? She thought I was meddling with their cash crops. I looked up at the branch. It seemed leafier. Was that my doing? She was probably watching their plants on that monitor. A whole security system for some plants? It would definitely have to be coca plants then. He wouldn’t do all this for cannabis plants. Those were too common. Everyone and their aunt seemed to know someone who grew them.

“You’re gonna use the bounty money you get from the werewolf hunter league or whatever it is to…to become big-time drug dealers?” I asked.

She smiled smugly.

“That’s the dumbest plan I’ve ever heard!” I said and I had heard many dumb plans from lawless patients in the ER who had come in with handcuffs and in police custody.

“What would you know?” She barked.

“Why use your bounty money to get from one dangerous line of work to another dangerous line of work?” I said.

She was silent.

“Name your price!” I said, coming close to the bars.

She sighed exasperatedly.

“What are you on about now?” She mumbled.

“What amount of money would it take for you to retire from all these…various crime jobs?” I asked.

“We’re the good guys,” she said indignantly. “You’re the flesh eating monsters!”

Orion had told me less than five percent of wolves ate the flesh of humans. It was frowned upon and actually not in their nature. They preferred other types of meat, the same kinds humans ate: pork, beef, poultry. The ones who ate humans were ostracised and were usually mountain and cave dwellers.

She smiled smugly.

“Most werewolves eat normal foods,” I said defensively. “But forget about that!”

“How am I supposed to forget about it? Huh?” She spat. “You monsters took my sister!”

I stiffened.

“Who took her?” I asked.

“Don’t play innocent!” She said, tearing up.

“Please! Who took her?!” I asked.

“The same people who brought you to Orion! How dare you play dumb?!” She yelled at the top of her lungs.

I was quiet, my mind racing.

“Your sister is alive,” I said.

“What?” She said, her voice small.

“I’m alive,” I said pointedly. “After being kidnapped! Why would your sister be dead?”

“Because most of the girls kidnapped are for eating!” She yelled.

That was so ridiculous. I had to hold back my laughter.

“Ellie, trust me. None of the girls from the auction are food. They become girlfriends, wives and for the worst case scenario…a s*x slave,” I said, lowering my voice compassionately. “Which is unacceptable!” I said.

Ellie was panting and sniffling.

“Jaack said…” she began.

“Jaack is a manipulator,” I said quickly. “He needed you as mindlessly angry as possible and he clearly doesn’t care about you! If he did, he would have told you the truth and tracked down and rescued your sister from whichever rich werewolf has her!”

She was panting, her chest heaving. She stared at me, her face tear-streaked.

“You really think she’s alive,” she said.

“YES!” I said with every ounce of confidence I could muster. “Do you want your sister back?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said softly.

“Then help me so I can help you,” I said, pleading with my eyes.

“I don’t want your help,” she snapped.

I sighed.

“You said I could name my price right?” She said after a long pause.

“Yeah,” I said eagerly.

“There’s…there’s this private investigator who replaces missing girls or exacts revenge if they’re found dead…” she said slowly, glancing at me.

“Done,” I said.

She snorted.

“He charges two million dollars upfront!” She scoffed.

“Done,” I said.

“What if he kills one of your wolf friends while investigating my sister’s disappearance?” She asked coldly.

It was my turn to snort. Orion and company could hold their own.

“The two million is yours!” I said.

“Well, what about living expenses?” She asked.

“Cut the crap and name a final price!” I snapped, surprising myself.

My voice had sounded a little deeper than normal. My eyesight felt a bit sharper. Ellie was too wrapped up in her own problems to notice a change in me.

“Seven million dollars!” She demanded.

“Done,” I said easily.

She laughed.

“Yeah right!” She said.

“What part of billionaire do you not understand?” I said.

She looked at me.

“You’re in that cage! Where are you gonna get the money from?” She asked.

“Obviously you need to contact Orion and demand it!” I said.

What kind of novice kidnapper was she?

“And put me on the phone! I’ll cry and beg him to wire you the money!” I said.

She didn’t respond. She just stared me at as if contemplating it.

“Time to switch,” said a voice I hated after several minutes of silence.

Jaack had returned. She laughed airily, grabbed her phone and magazine and kissed him on the stairs. She took one last look at me. I gave her the most pointed look I could muster. Ellie could be my ticket out of here.
