Aria’s POV

The silence in the car was so loud, I was sure that the sound of my heart thumping was the only thing that filled the vehicle.

When I glanced at Roma, I saw that he looked at me, particularly my bruised neck that I had hidden with a black turtle neck top. My hand reached out to touch my neck softly and when I winced, I saw his hand tighten on the steering wheel.

Did he regret hurting me? If he did, I would be surprised. Even my father, my own flesh and b***d never thought twice before punching me in the face, so a little bruise was nothing compared to being unable to walk for days after getting beaten by my father during one of his drunken episodes.

“I’m sorry.” I whispered and he looked at me like I was crazy.

“What are you apologizing for, Aria?”

His voice, deep and velvety filled the car and made me momentarily blank as I tried to think of an answer. Was that a hint of an accent that I heard there?

“You’re going to put a hole in my face one of these days.”

Blushing, I looked away towards the window beside me and cleared my throat.

“The West wing. I’m sorry for entering without permission.”

“Hmmm” He replied and then we were back to the stiff silence.

I didn’t know what I was expecting but the last thing I wanted was to be in the silence again so I decided to satisfy my curiosity.

“Do wolves eat humans?”

I was sure that if Roma wasn’t driving, he would have rolled his eyes at me, shaken his head and walked away. He settled for his signature frown and I turned towards the window, sure he was not going to answer.

“Cooked with a little garnishing” was his reply and I turned to look at him, my mouth wide in shock.

“Really? With soup?”

His lips kicked up in a smile and it vanished so fast I was almost certain I had imagined it until I heard a chuckle. At first, I thought I was dreaming until the chuckle became full blown laugher.

Roma was laughing.

It didn’t even matter that he was probably laughing at me because I couldn’t stop looking at him as he tried and failed to stop. He looked…radiant. Up until now, I had never understood how handsome he was. Before when he had looked incapable of even smiling, his beauty was like a blade, lethal and deadly. Now, it was a blade that glowed. A blade that for the first time, was not fearsome but called to be touched.

He stopped laughing when he looked at me and I didn’t know what I probably looked like watching him but he cleared his throat, his frown making way to his face and looked back at the road as we finally left the road leading into the mountainous region where the pack was situated in the main town of Shadow Plains.

As we entered the town, a feeling of nostalgia hit me. I didn’t think much time had passed since I was taken by Roma to the pack but it felt so weird to be in the town now that I knew about werewolves living in the mountains.

“I guess wolves do not eat humans then.” I blurted, my lower l*p jutted out in a pout.

“Wolves? They eat anything, Aria. But werewolves have refined tastes and humans are not top of the menu.” He answered.

“Oh.” I whispered in response and when stole a look at him, I saw that even though he wasn’t laughing anymore, he wasn’t frowning. So the first time when he answered, he had been teasing me? It started to feel like I was dreaming of this entire ride, starting from when he offered to drive me.

“Thank you. For answering, I mean.” I said and when he nodded, I bit my l*p as I stopped myself from asking another question. A question that wasn’t as simple as this one and might get me thrown out of the car.

He glanced at me and raised his eyebrows.

“Why did you ask, Ajello?”

The look on his face screamed obedience so I knew that avoiding the question was not an option. Even though what I wanted to say made me even more curious.

“When we were back in your wing, you looked scary. Like you were going to tear me to pieces and probably hang my bones somewhere. ” I meant for the last part to come out as a joke but when Roma’s frown returned, it seemed I had said something wrong. He didn’t look like he was going to answer this question at all.

Luckily, he had just arrived in front of my house and I swallowed nervously, praying that I did not meet my father at home.

“Go, on, Ajello. You’ve been staring at the porch for some time now. We don’t have all day.” Roma reminded me when he parked in front of the house and I just stared instead of getting down.

“Thank you for the ride. I won’t be long.” I told him and got out of the car, heading towards the door with anxiety slowing my movements. The last time I was here, my father had given me to Roma like I had meant nothing. I didn’t intend on staying for a while like I had told Roma because this house held nothing but bad memories for me since my mother passed and I was left to grow up on my own by my drunk excuse of a father.

I pushed the door gently, rolling my eyes when I saw that he had forgotten to lock it like he always did. Well, all the better for me to get in and get out. Heading to my room, my mouth fell open in shock to see everything so disorganized. It looked like someone had ransacked my belongings, searching for something.

Typical of my father to destroy everything, thinking I would hide money somewhere in the house so he could go and drink himself to death. Stepping over the mess he had created, my eyes scanned the room, stopping when I saw my sketch pad on the floor beside my bed. Rushing to check if it was in a good state, I vowed to return and makes things right, perhaps place him a mental facility.

Quickly retrieving the sketch pad, I tiptoed out of the room only to meet my father, already drunk and disoriented, in front of the room door. His sleepy eyes widened in surprise and as the surprise quickly moved to rage.

“What are you doing here? He slurred, holding a half finished bottle of beer.

No greeting or anything of the sort after selling me off. Typical behaviour.

“Answer me, brat. Why are you back? Did you run away and came back here?” He growled, his hand latching around my wrist.

I shook him off and he grabbed my shoulders and shook me roughly.

He probably thinks I’m running away from the alpha and trying to have him killed for escaping the ruthless man.

Before I could open my mouth to explain, my father pinned me to the wall and pushed me to the ground, his facial expression livid.

“Will you at least let me just…” I tried to explain but my words vanished because he slapped me.
