Roma’s pov:

“Our trackers found a new shipment of silver bullets enroute into town. We managed to intercept the shipment and destroy the weapons, but I believe that’s not the last we’ll see of it. We think the hunters are back and they’re preparing an attack. We have to do something about it,” Dante said, his face grim and serious.

“Our borders are protected with wards and invisibility spells. Anyone that steps foot unauthorized in our territory will get turned around,” Carlos said flippantly.

“Then what will you say about the confused human teenager we found in the woods the last time?”

“Dumb luck. I suppose you disposed of him effectively.”

Dante banged his fists on the table. “I have lost too many brothers, my own father, to the humans. I cannot overlook warning signs as clear as this.”

“At least, you lost your father to the enemy,” Carlos replied before glancing at me. Burning accusation in them. “I can’t say the same about mine.”

I sighed and reclined back in my seat, affecting nonchalance on the outside, however, on the inside, I was thinking about this new information Dante just told us.

I knew first hand how brutal the humans could be in their attempt to wipe the werewolf race out of existence. Even now, the pain of losing my mate and unborn pup still burned fresh in my chest.

“Take new routes while delivering the next shipment. Nobody goes in or out the borders except I expressly approve of it. Raphael,” I looked at my beta, “double the guards that patrol the borders and have them report to me at the end of the day.”

“Yes, Alpha.” Raphael and Dante answered. Carlos merely looked at me, his face brimming with restrained rage and annoyance before he nodded with a bow and left the room. I knew that he blamed me for a lot of things. I wondered what it would take for us to put aside our differences and be more than Alpha and Beta. Be brothers. But perhaps it was a foolish dream. Perhaps it was too late for the two of us.

Aria’s POV

Sweating so much, it felt like water had been poured on my bed, I woke up with a start, the nightmare already fading away but not the terror.

I felt like it had sharp claws that slowly caressed my face. Maybe it was because I was truly now surrounded by creatures that indeed possessed sharp claws. I missed my sketch book terribly.

Rushing into the bathroom, I showered and decided that I was going to replace Roma and ask him for permission to go home and retrieve my sketch book.

Looking at the time, I saw that I had dozed off after doing my afternoon chores and having lunch. It was almost six which meant I had to hurry to see if Roma would let me go. Stepping out of my room, I took a sharp left towards the kitchen to see if there was anyone I could ask about Roma’s whereabouts.

My eyes stayed on a picture of a gigantic black werewolf on the wall, the other pictures in the hallway fading out of sight. This wolf was large, a lot larger than Raphael I was sure.

Thinking about Raphael made goosebumps appear on my skin as I recalled how he had turned in a gigantic creature with claws and teeth and laughed later as if it was totally normal. It wasn’t normal. Nothing about Roma and this place was normal. Not in the least.

When I arrived in the kitchen, I headed towards Carla, who looked to be about my age and cleared my throat.

“Where is Sophia?” I asked and she shrugged. “This is usually resting time for everyone here. Movement begins again around 7pm. You might as well head to her room.”

I wanted to ask where Roma was but somehow the question got stuck in my throat. Maybe it was the way she looked at me like I was an outsider. If Sophia was right, I was probably the only human in this place. I would have to ask her the next time I saw her.

Nodding with a smile, I stepped out of the kitchen and began my journey back towards the quarters when I stopped and turned left.

The West wing.

I remembered that Sophia had told me I could go anywhere but here and that no one was allowed without permission from Roma. But did I have to walk all the way to the other side if at the end of the day, the person I wanted to see was here?

Plus, he might not even be there, right?

I was just going to check if he was and come out immediately. Clean and smooth, Aria. Clean and smooth.

Looking left and right to be sure that one was watching, I swallowed before pushing at the huge doors that led into the wing. It made a creak and then gave way and I looked around again before I snuck in, closing the door slowly so that it didn’t make another sound again.

Everywhere was so dark even though the sun was just setting outside and it made me wonder how anybody could even replace their left from their right here. The air was cold and the further I went, the faster my heart raced, warning me that this was not a good idea.

Turn around now, Aria. Before it’s too late.

It was too late already, I thought as I took another step forward.

If I was already here, I should finish it. I just wanted to ask for permission to go and retrieve my sketchpad. I felt a shadow of something move past me all of a sudden and my eyes widened as I took a right and entered his bed chamber.

What was that? Had I imagined it? My fear was quickly forgotten when my eyes adjusted to the light in the room and I opened my mouth in surprise.

His bedchamber was probably big enough for fifty people to sleep if they all used the small sized beds that I was using to sleep. I looked around to see that the decoration was dark and moody. Just like their owner.

There was a couch and sofas facing the fireplace, which was the only source of light right now in this dark room and my eyes finally settled on his bed. It was a large four poster bed that looked like something one would replace in the medieval times.

Did Roma sleep here? I wondered what he looked like when he slept? Was he peaceful? Did he look less menacing? Did he even sleep? My eyes moved from the bed to another painting on the wall just beside the fireplace and it was that same wolf.

Big, black and scary but with red eyes. Eyes that reminded me of a demon that I’d read about in one book when I was still mad about novels.

I walked up to the painting, stretching out a hand to touch it when I felt another shadow move past me.

This time, the hairs on the back of my neck stood because what followed that movement was a growl.

An angry growl of a beast.
