Strings of Fate by Kit Bryan -
Chapter 121

“Can you tell me more about what you see? Does it always happen? Does it ever change?” I ask, all in one go. Amber patiently answers all my questions.
“I will see a scene as it happens, like a kind of spectator. I have no control over what viewpoint I have and I don’t get context. Like playing a random clip from a movie but you don’t know what movie it is or what part of the movie it’s up to. You might be able to work out what’s going on from context clues, you might even recognise the people or location. Sometimes I can get the exact times if they happen to stand by a clock or have a phone or watch I can see.” She pauses to think before answering the next question.
“The things I see, USUALLY happen. But not always, they can change. If someone changes their mind about something. I suspect the visions I see are usually the results of specific decisions. For example I saw you talking about having me over. Because you made that decision I saw it. If for some reason you changed your mind, got sick or were interrupted I might have seen something completely different.” I stare, a little confused.
“But wouldn’t that make it impossible to predict anything? People change their minds constantly!” She shakes her head.
“Not really, they might adjust their plans a little, but the important decisions, the ones that
result in actions tend to change very little once someone has actually decided. They might debate for a while first, but very few people change their minds regularly.” I replace that pretty surprising, but I suppose it makes sense. Making decisions is pretty hard sometimes, I might go back and forth a few times, but I suppose if I am still going back and forth on something then the decision isn’t really made. Wait, something doesn’t make sense.
“But if you don’t see things unless a decision is made, then how did you know I would need
leave from work a few weeks in advance? I called as soon as i decided.” I question. Amber
shrugs.
“It probably wasn’t your decision that decided it. It might have been the combination of someone deciding to harm you combined with your Shifter’s long standing decision to keep you safe. You know as well as anyone that it’s not just your own choices that impact the path your life goes down.” She explains.

“I suppose that makes sense. What about the fates that I see? If I know that someone is meant for someone else, nand you see me, would you also know?” I question, Amber shakes her head, then swaps to a shrug.
“I don’t see what you see, just what is. If you commented on it or told someone I might seet it, but your magic is your own. I see your responses sometimes, that’s all.” Ahhh, so she probably doesn’t know about Shaun, not for sure. But if I tell someone then she very likely would know. If that’s the case, I probably shouldn’t tell anyone. Megan has already said she is content not knowing these things, but I was looking forward to discussing it with Bellamy. Now I’m thinking it would be unfair if I did. But what would be the harm in her knowing a little too much? She usually does anyway.
“Would you want to know? Or would you prefer I actively try to hide it?” I ask, Amber laughs.
“Don’t make decisions on my account. I’m used to knowing things a little early, and usually it’s stuff that directly relates to me. I live life based on the information I have, just like everyone else, the only difference is that I sometimes know a little more. It’s like living life with a cheat sheet. The information might help, but I still have to understand, interpret and figure out how to use it. Just makes your decisions as usual. Trying to determine the butterfly effect of the choices you make is impossible and will only end up being a headache.” She says. firmly. Well, that’s it then, I guess I will tell Bellamy like I planned originally. I wonder if she knows yet, I have made the decision after all. I study her face carefully. She has a better poker face than I do but I catch a sudden fluttering of her eyes that tells me she’s seen. SOMETHING. She smiles at me calmly, giving nothing away. Damnit. I glance over at Shaun to see how he’s reacting to all this. He has his phone out, but I’m pretty sure he is just pretending to use it in an attempt to seem less nosy than he actually is. It might take him at while to work out that Amber is meant to be his mate, but he has definitely noticed her. Amber takes advantage of my distracted silence to ask some questions of her own.
“So, tell me about these dreams of yours. What do you see and why are you convinced that they’re real?” She asks curiously. I explain the dreams I’ve had and how I saw Kiara before the papers reported anything and I knew exactly what she looked like before I saw her picture.
Amber listens attentively.
“Did the dreams happen before the kidnapping or at the same time? The papers reported it in the morning, so if you saw it the night before then it wasn’t seeing it in advance but rather you saw the girl as she was in the moment. What else can you see? Can you move around in the visions or control them in any way?” I shake my head quickly.

“No not at all. I see literally nothing other than the little girl, it is like she is sitting in blackness. I can see her be moved around by others but it’s like they’re invisible, I can’t hear anything either, it’s very frustrating.” I admit. Amber considers the information I’ve provided. carefully before she speaks again.
“It’s strange. It isn’t visions of the future, so it’s not like an Oracle ablity. You have no control over it and can only see the one thing, which makes it unlike a Seer’s abilities. If anything, it sounds like you are linked to the girl in some way. You said that you had a very strong emotional reaction to what you’ve seen, that suggests to me that it’s something specific about her, probably related to your own magic in some way.” She reasons.
“But that makes no sense, I’ve. Never even met her. How would we have a connection?”
Amber shrugs.
“That’s why I said it was strange. I don’t have all the answers.“she reminds me gently. I sigh.
“Yeah I know. Sorry, it;s just frustrating. If I am connected to this girl, I can’t help thinking there’s a reason and that I am meant to save her somehow. But what’s the point if all I can do is watch her cry?” I just feel useless, Amber reaches over the table and grabs my hands.
”
“Shhh, you’ll figure it out eventually. She is one lucky girl to have you looking for her.”
