Chapter 271

Waverly was stunned.

Clearly, she never expected Bailey to be so direct.

Regardless, hearing that from Bailey made Waverly relieved.

Straightforward people are much easier to deal with compared to those pretentious hypocrites with badintentions.

“Ms. Jefferson, I like your straightforwardness. You've just arrived, and you're already jumping straightinto the topic,” Waverly commented.

Bailey raised her brow and smiled. “I've been mistaken as you several times in the past, which appearsto be a strange twist of fate. Besides, we would eventually have to dive into the main topic, anyway. There's no difference between talking about it now or later. Thus, there's no need for us to beat aroundthe bush.”

Waverly smiled and nodded in response.

If only this lady wasn't Zozo's love rival. I probably could've treated her as my own daughter justbecause she looks exactly like me.

Though Waverly had given birth to Zoey, she could not replace a single resemblance on her daughter'sface. However, Waverly's attention was completely captured after meeting Bailey, who had such aninteresting personality.

Unfortunately, Zoey had also fallen in love with the son of the Luther family. After weighing the pros andcons, she realized she only had one option.

“All right. Since you're so straightforward, then I shall be honest as well. My daughter is young andimmature. She was too blinded by love that she thought there was something going on between youand Artemis. That's why she had a momentary lapse of judgment, which led her to make that mistake.Thankfully, no substantial damage was caused. For the sake of this good relationship we have, can youplease forgive my daughter's foolish acts?”

Bailey side-eyed Waverly and flashed the latter a half smile. “What if I say there's really somethinggoing on between Artemis and me? Will you stand on your daughter's side and go against me in thefuture? Will I be creating a threat for myself if I forgive her today? Mrs. Shurmer, do you really think I'lldo something so disadvantageous for myself?”

Waverly was truly the matriarch of the Shurmer family. Despite Bailey's uncomfortable questions, theformer's expression never changed. Instead, she said calmly, “Oh, Ms. Jefferson, you must be joking. You've given Mr. Simon two children. In terms of seniority in the family, Artemis is the uncle of your twochildren. Anyone can date whomever they like, but you can never be with Artemis. That's against thesocial rules, after all. I'm sure you're a smart person, Ms. Jefferson. How could you go against thesocial rules?”

Bailey sneered inwardly.

And now she starts talking about morals, eh? Why didn't she consider the consequence of herdaughter falling into my hands when she was condoning Zoey's actions of messing with me?

“Mrs. Shurmer, you're truly a smart person. Sadly, your daughter's foolishness has caused her to makea mistake that'll ruin her reputation.”

Waverly quickly chimed in, “Yes. She was being foolish. Otherwise, she wouldn't have come up withsuch a rotten idea. Ms. Jefferson, please state your terms. I'll never decline as long as it's somethingwithin the Shurmer family's powers.”

Bailey lowered her head and played with her nails while saying casually, “The test report for the newdrug is out. Not only did she tell Kayden to switch out the original ingredients, she even switched outthe sample I came up with. Thankfully, Kayden's rationality prevailed, and he reported this matter to theDepartment of Justice in time. If not, this batch of drugs would've caused many deaths once it waslaunched. I'd be the first to be criticized terribly. Do you think this matter can be resolved just becauseyou say she was being stupid? This is a serious matter, after all.”

Waverly frowned.

She was no fool. Naturally, she sensed the threat behind Bailey's words.

Alas, it did Waverly no good, even if she saw through it.

She has the drug's test report. Once it's submitted to the court, Zozo will be found guilty.

“If that's the case, what do you think is the most appropriate way to settle this?”

Bailey blinked and raised her brow. “I heard that Ms. Shurmer rescued Mr. Luther once. How aboutthis? I'll forgive her this once as repayment for this favor Mr. Luther owes her. How about that?”

Waverly was stunned.

Her instincts told her that Bailey's and Artemis' relationship was much more complicated than sheexpected.

The fact that Bailey was willing to ask for the repayment of the debt Artemis owed Zoey instead ofusing such a great opportunity to gain more benefits for herself was surprising. I'll never believe it ifsomeone says this lady isn't interested in Artemis. Looks like Zozo has found herself a powerfulopponent.

“You seem to be getting the short end of the stick on this deal. Why don't we do this? I'll place theShurmer family's best research base in Archulea under your name. In the future, you can stay inArchulea to develop new medicines instead of coming all the way to Hallsbay.”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk...” Bailey could not help but click her tongue.

The best research base, eh? Mrs. Shurmer is really giving her all to make me leave Hallsbay. Thenagain...

“I'm sorry. I've already made a deal with Mr. Luther. He says if I can use this opportunity to repay thefavor he owes Ms. Shurmer, then he'll give me three research bases. The deal you're offering is not asattractive as the one Mr. Luther offered. I'm afraid I'll have to reject it.”

Waverly's lips twitched in frustration.

I get it now. This lady is colluding with Artemis. They're determined to use this chance to repay Zozo'sfavor for saving Artemis' life seven years ago. That's clever. Oh, Zozo. You're so foolish. You've

squandered all your advantages by just making one mistake.

“Okay. I shall accept your proposal, Ms. Jefferson.”

Bailey cocked her brow and smiled. “It doesn't count if you say yes. Ms. Shurmer has to personallyaccept it. Moreover, she has to promise she'll never use the incident of her saving his life as an excuseto make Mr. Luther do anything for her again in the future.”

Waverly was at a loss for words.

She calmed herself down and suppressed the surging rage in her. Suddenly, she changed the subject.“Ms. Jefferson, your personality is really different from your mother's. Even your looks are different. Ifyour surname wasn't Jefferson, I would've wondered if Sophia actually gave birth to you.”

Taken aback, Bailey eyed her and asked, “You knew my mother?”

“How can we not know each other when we're from the same industry? Come to think of it, your motherand I were at the same hospital on the same day, waiting to give birth back then. In fact, you and Zozoshould be born on the same date.”

Victoria was sitting in the CEO's office of Saunders Group while reading a document.

Standing beside her was her assistant, who said anxiously, “Ms. Saunders, Saunders Group's stockprices have been plummeting recently. It's causing the company's executives to panic. Someshareholders even want to sell their shares to escape the situation. What do you think we should do?”

Smack!

Victoria slammed the document on the table. She leaned back in her chair despondently and saidhoarsely, “Lucy, can I trust you?”

Lucy Chambers, the assistant, nodded fervently. “I was trained by you. I'll never betray you, even ifeveryone in the company does so.”

“Very well, Lucy.” Victoria got up from her chair, walked around the desk, and approached Lucy. Sheplaced her arms on the latter's shoulders and uttered clearly, “I've ordered the finance department tomobilize the assets to control the stock market first. After that, I'll sell off all of my shares and withdrawa large sum of money. Once the stock market collapses, we'll publicly announce that Saunders Grouphas gone bankrupt.”

Lucy gazed at her in puzzlement and stammered, “M-Ms. Saunders, are you trying to abscond with themoney? That's illegal!”
