Sweet Twins Indulge in Daddy's Love -
Chapter 256 There Is Nothing To Hide
"No, marriage is not merely a form nor a transaction; it is a commitment and responsibility! When a married man cheats on his wife, he is considered to be immoral and is despised by society. Unmarried couples aren't bind by this relationship. Do you understand?" Charles was a little anxious and scolded Nancy.
"Why are you being so agitated? Anyway, I like the relationship that we currently have. But enough of that for now. It's time for dinner." After Nancy said this, she walked out of the room. Charles sighed in frustration. 'What is it about marriage that she's afraid of? What are her apprehensions?'
He could not believe that the concept of marriage frightened her.
Charles thought about how he could stir Nancy's feelings so she would finally agree with him. He couldn't allow her to be always influenced by Doris.
Nancy already decided that she wouldn't tell Charles about Jessie asking for red envelopes from the family of patients. But that she had left the notebook on the cabinet slipped her mind. Right after dinner, she took a shower and leaned against the bed's headboard to read.
Charles was in charge of bathing the children. He could only rest after they were settled and ready for bed. After a quick shower, Charles walked into the bedroom. Something on top of the cabinet caught his attention: the notebook from Erin.
Without thinking too much about it, he picked up the notebook and opened its pages. He saw numbers. As soon as he figured out what those numbers represented, his face started to crumple with exasperation.
"Nancy, what is this all about?" Charles said aggressively, holding the notebook in his left hand.
Nancy raised her head and asked lazily, "What's what?"
As soon as she saw the notebook, she straightened up and got out of bed. "That's mine. Give it back to me!"
She instinctively tried to take the notebook from Charles, but he was quick to grab her arm. "Nancy, please don't tell me that it was you who did this."
Without a name indicated on the notebook, it could have been owned by anyone. It might be Nancy's. It was so easy for Charles to misunderstand.
"You have known me for so long, Charles. By now you still don't know what kind of person I am?" If you think of me that way, why do you still insist on marrying me? If I was really a terrible person, would you still see me as worthy of your love?" she asked, feeling hurt and disappointed.
"I would never doubt your integrity, but how do you explain these numbers?" Charles asked in a soft voice, a little calmer now.
He knew deep within his soul that she was a decent person. Even though he had so much money, she wouldn't do anything shameful to get her hands on it.
But what was with the notebook? Why was she reacting so strongly about it?
Charles looked at her suspiciously.
Nancy exhaled, "Charles, I don't think we should suspect each other like this. We have been together for so long to have any room for doubts. We should trust each other completely, don't you agree?"
"Of course, I agree that we should trust each other. That's why if you need money, please don't hesitate to ask me for help. You don't have to bear any trouble alone. We are a family now. There should be nothing to hide. You understand that, right?" Charles said warmly.
Charles wondered whether it had something to do with Jade being in the sanatorium. But he already waived all her treatment fees. Nancy probably needed the cash for her mother's expenses or something else that she couldn't tell him about.
He stared into her eyes.
The way Charles gazed at her suspiciously made Nancy feel uncomfortable. "Are you still doubting me?"
Charles had always been somewhat indifferent. He was not easily angered. But the way that Nancy was refusing to explain what was going on was driving him mad. Infuriated, he threw the notebook at her and demanded an answer. "Nancy, you have to tell me what those numbers mean."
Nancy didn't want to hide anything from Charles, but thinking about what could happen if she did kept her from telling him the truth.
Stressed out, she put the notebook on top of the bedside table. She pulled away and lay on the bed. "I want to sleep now!"
To her surprise, Charles wouldn't let the argument go. He grabbed her, and said firmly, "No, Nancy. No one's sleeping tonight until I completely understand what's going on!"
"Charles, you're acting like a crook! If you don't plan on sleeping, please let me have mine!" Charles started to get on her nerves.
"Of course I want to sleep. But what about this issue?" Charles gritted his teeth in anger.
Nancy ignored him and turned her head. She said
nothing.
Charles made her face him and looked straight into her eyes. "Nancy, tell me what's going on," he asked her firmly.
Nancy sighed. She thought about what to say. After a while, she decided to ask him, "Charles, if I told you that these numbers represent the amounts of money that I asked from the patients, how would you punish me?"
"Are you struggling with finances? What do you need more money for?" Charles took note of how serious her facial expression was. He almost believed what she just said. But he knew better than to think of her that way. He always had a good sense of judgment towards people, and he knew that couldn't be wrong about her.
Nancy closed her eyes and shook her head.
"If so, then why would you do such a shameful thing?" Charles needed to know.
"It wasn't me!"
"Well, tell me who!"
"I've been struggling about whether I should tell you this or not. I was worried you would remove her from her post. I didn't want that to happen to anyone because of me." Nancy started revealing pieces of the truth.
"It's Jessie, isn't it? If not, then it's Anna? It must be either one of them. Tell me, am I right?"
"I don't know!" she shouted, feeling overwhelmed.
"Alright, if you really wouldn't tell me, I can order Hiram to investigate this matter as early as tomorrow!" Charles roared, feeling annoyed.
Their argument had gotten loud enough for Bobby and Nadia to hear. Soon, the kids were awake.
Frightened by the loud noises, the children headed over to their parents' room and slowly pushed the door open.
"Mommy, daddy, are you quarreling?" Nadia mumbled delicately.
Charles and Nancy were both aware of Nadia's fragility, so they were afraid of frightening her. Nancy hurriedly held Charles' arm and said with a smile, "Daddy and I are just playing games, Nadia. You don't have to worry about anything."
"Is that true, Daddy?" Bobby asked. He seemed wary.
Charles' expression remained the same. His eyes were as cold as they had been during the whole time they were arguing.
Nancy subtly pinched his arm to catch his attention.
He grimaced in pain.
"Yes, mommy and I were just playing games!" Charles followed Nancy's lead. "Daddy loves mommy very much, and mommy loves daddy too. We are a loving family!" he added.
"What game were you and mommy playing, daddy? Can we join the game and play with you?" Nadia's eyes shone with excitement when she heard about playing games with mommy and daddy. Before Charles and Nancy could say anything, their daughter already found her way into their bed.
"But... It's already late, Nadia." This was all Charles managed to say.
"But weren't you still playing when we arrived? Why don't we play for a while, mommy and daddy?" Nadia insisted.
"That's right, mommy and daddy. I'm also wondering about the game you were playing. Please teach us the game for a while. It's impossible for us to immediately get back to sleep now," Bobby appealed. Charles sighed in defeat. He knew that there was no escaping this request from their children. He thought for a while, trying to come up with an idea for a game. "Mommy and I were playing a game of catching people. Using a blindfold to cover our eyes, we then try to catch a person. The one who is caught gets eliminated. Are you sure you want to play this game?"
"The game sounds fun, daddy! Of course, I want to play it with you and mommy. Bobby, you like it too, don't you?" Nadia got even more excited. She wouldn't leave the room anytime soon.
"Yes, Nadia, I want to play the game, too. I'll be in the same group with mommy, and you'll team up with daddy, okay?" Bobby divided them into two teams.
