Sweet Twins Indulge in Daddy's Love -
Chapter 590 A Pale Face
"Well, I have come around now. Bobby is a good boy. You will learn a lot from him. I was confused and couldn't tell right from wrong a while ago. But now I know, so I won't stop you from befriending him," the woman said with a smile.
"Oh, that's my good mommy!" Ruby grinned.
"Ruby, classes are about to begin. Why haven't you gone to class yet?" Bobby called from a distance.
"Coming, Bobby," Ruby replied. After saying goodbye to her mother, Ruby ran to her class with her schoolbag on her back.
The woman stood there, smiled, and watched Ruby happily hop to her class.
After driving Bobby and Nadia to school and on her way to work, Nancy took out her cellphone and found that there was no call or message from Charles.
'The man doesn't care about his children or our home anymore. What the hell is he doing?'
Putting her phone away, Nancy drove to the hospital.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Nancy changed her clothes and went straight to Finn's ward.
The little boy's face was still very pale, and Colten's and his wife's eyes were red. Obviously, they did not get that much sleep last night.
"How is he?" Nancy asked with concern.
"He woke up twice during the night. After the anesthetic wore off, he seemed to be in so much pain." Colten was tough, but his voice cracked as he replied to Nancy.
"Well, it's normal for him to feel pain. He's lucky to be able to keep his legs. We should be grateful," Nancy remarked.
"And we should thank you as well, Nancy," Colten said gratefully.
"That's not necessary. By the way, I heard that you were investigating Romantic Private Club yesterday when Finn was ran over. The Romantic Private Club case is big. I was also one of its victims. Do you have any leads now?" Nancy asked tentatively.
"Unfortunately, we don't have any new leads. This case is definitely not as simple as it looks. I'm convinced that shady transactions take place there, but without any concrete evidence, the investigation will remain stagnant," Colten sighed helplessly.
"Nana is a key figure and could be the way to cracking the case open, but she's mentally indisposed now. I have contacted a psychiatrist to treat her. I believe she will be able to recover soon and hopefully before the media gets wind of the case. It can get out of hand really fast once it's out there," Nancy said after thinking for a while.
"Well, let's pray that Nana recovers soon."
"By the way, have you found the driver who ran over Finn?" Yesterday, when Finn was rushed to the hospital, Nancy was the one who attended to him. Anyone who committed such a heinous crime against a child should be held accountable and punished.
Colten shook his head. "The driver who ran over Finn got away."
"You didn't check the surveillance footage?" As far as Nancy knew, the school gate was the place with the most number of surveillance cameras. If there was an accident at the gate, it should be easy to replace the perpetrator.
How could the driver just run away like that?
"I did. I found it incredibly appalling that the driver didn't even step out of the car to try and help Finn. The hit looked deliberate. Someone said that the driver even attempted to reverse the car on Finn to make sure he didn't get up again. Fortunately, many people came to Finn's rescue at that time, and the driver had no choice but to escape." Colten looked at Finn with a pitiful look on his face and said guiltily, "This is all my fault. As a policeman, I'm successful, but as a father, I'm a failure."
"Don't blame yourself. You said that the hit looked deliberate. Do you think the driver did it on purpose?" Nancy asked after being silent for a while.
"I'm sure that the driver did it on purpose. I suspect that he's sending me a message because of my involvement in the investigation of the club. After all, too many people are involved in the case, and all of them are rich and powerful. I'm under a lot of pressure right now," Colten answered. "But I refuse to let the bad guys win. Just because I'm under a lot of pressure doesn't mean I should stop seeking the truth." "You're right. If we don't go after the bad guys, they will just grow more and more arrogant and continue treating life like some sort of a sick little game," Nancy agreed.
"Yes. Being a part of the police force, I understand that my life and my family's will always be in danger," Colten sighed.
"Yes..." Nancy murmured.
But the reality was, no matter what kind of job it was, someone needed to do it.
Someone needed to be a teacher, a doctor, and a policeman.
Before, being in the teaching and medical professions was not as highly risky as being in the police force, but now, every profession seemed to offer their own dangers. The world was really getting more and more perilous.
After leaving Finn's ward, Nancy went to see Nana. Nana was in a much better condition than yesterday, perhaps because she had taken Rick's medicine.
"You're Nancy..." As soon as Nancy entered, Nana smiled at her.
She recognized Nancy right away.
"Yes, I'm Nancy. It's good that you still remember me." Nancy sat beside Nana's bed with a smile.
"Of course I remember you. You also remember me, don't you?" Nana asked.
"Of course I do. You saved my life," Nancy answered, rubbing Nana's hand gently.
"I did? I saved you, but I don't remember." Nana shook her head.
"Do you remember Romantic Private Club?" Nancy asked cautiously.
Hearing this, Nana suddenly became nervous. "I don't know. Don't ask me. I know nothing."
Before Nancy could ask anything else, Nana was already shaking in fear.
It seemed that what happened in the club was more horrible than Nancy had imagined.
"It's all right. If you don't know, you don't have to tell me anything. I won't ask. It's okay. You're safe here. Don't be afraid. Come on, have some orange." As Nancy spoke, she pulled the fruit basket, peeled an orange, and handed it to Nana.
Nana looked at Nancy quietly for a while as if trying to determine whether Nancy was a good person or a bad person.
Then Nana looked down at Nancy's hand and slowly took the orange.
Nana carefully took a bite of the orange, smiled, and said, "It's so sweet."
"Well, I'm glad you like it. From now on, you can tell me whatever you want to eat, and I will get it for you." Nancy continued to peel oranges for Nana.
"Why are you being so kind to me? The members of my family have never been kind to me. They dislike and shun me for being unclean, but if I were clean, they would starve to death. They had groomed me to make money at the age of fourteen, and then I was sold to a club. There..." Nana looked like she wanted to say something else but decided against it. She suddenly fell silent.
Nancy did not ask. She knew that she had to talk less and listen more when dealing with a psychiatric patient.
Then, Nana's face tensed up again.
"Would you like another orange?" Nancy handed another orange to Nana.
Nana did not take the orange this time. She looked at it quietly for a while and said in a low voice, "You should leave now. The bad guys will come soon."
