“It matters not, Raine. There are more pressing matters that needs our attention.” My knuckles stroked over the softness of her cheek, saddened to see that disillusioned stare in her eyes. I vowed to make it my personal mission to replace out who her father was, alive or dead.

“Of course.” She turned her face away from me. “What will become of the baby? Will you send her back to her pack?”

I didn’t need this extra trouble. I needed wine.

“No, I won’t. She’d be safer here.” The odds of her surviving was higher here than sending her back to her pack, a female Alpha. I filled my goblet with the red liquid, swirling it in the golden cup. When I looked down into it, it reminded me of the Luna’s blood spilling onto the black rocks. I swallowed it down and it tasted bitter.

Raine took the goblet out of my hand. “What will happen now, Amaris?” I felt myself drowning in those amber pools.

Go ds, I needed her, needed to have her in my arms and never let go.

“I will send the bodies to the Beta of the Blood Fang pack.” There will be more bloodshed. Sorin was right. I should have burnt down the entire pack, then none of this would have happened..

She came into my arms willingly, sighing softly. I closed my eyes, thanking the g ods that she still accepted me, didn’t shrink away from me, or called me a monster. Maybe she still will, eventually.

I stayed with Raine a while longer, needing to pacify Rage enough to go and speak to that dam nable boy in the dungeon. After dealing with the guards who had let an assassin slip through the security, Rage was out for blood. He’d ripped through them like whirlwind, and I had let him. No pleading, no excuses, I wanted to hear none. They’d caused me a f uck lot of trouble.

Now I had the Luna’s blood on my hands. She had come too close to killing my mate and it made me lose all control. Ross told me how Raine stopped him from dispatching the Luna, and he was taken aback that he had actually listened to her. He said he couldn’t help himself, that it felt like an invisible force held him in place. That was something I needed to explore. There was much more to my little mate than meets the eye. I doubt that even she knows the extent of her power.

I stepped into the damp, dark dungeon. The boy was the only occupant in the vast place. I never took many prisoners, replaceing it unnecessary to waste resources and I have never been fond of torturing my own kind. If they needed punishment, I dealt it out swiftly.

The guards let me through to the cells. It reeked of excrement and pi ss. I was eager to get out.

“He’s not much of a talker, your Majesty.” The head guard gave his report. “But I’ve noticed a strange marking on him, it’s not like any pack mark I’ve ever seen.”

He unlocked the cell where the boy was incarcerated. He didn’t bow or acknowledge my presence. The guard rushed at him and struck him in the face. The boy fell to the ground, soundlessly.

“You will bow to your king!” he snarled at the impassive young man.

“Leave us.” I told the guard. I waited until he was far enough away. “Get up.”

The boy slowly got up from the stone floor, glaring at me coldly. My nose wrinkled in disgust at the sight of him. He was in dire need of a shower, reeking worse than the slop in a pigsty.

“Drop the attitude boy. I am not your enemy.”

“That remains to be seen.” The impudent pup said to me. “Heard you killed the Alpha and Luna of the Blood Fang pack.”

I shook my head, chuckling bitterly. “Bad news travels fast, but that is incorrect. What was he to you, anyway? Your Alpha?”

“No, my Alpha was killed when your men raided our pack.” One side snarl in check. His hatred of me was apparent in the way he stood there with his hands balled into tight

“Who was your Alpha, boy? I’m losing my patience with you.” Although I admired his gutsiness, today was not the day to test me. At least he was talking and that was something.

“Kade, he was my father.” His voice sounded bitter, broken.

I frowned at the boy, so he was of Alpha blood. That would explain the insolence.

He was skinny to the point of starvation, what remained of his clothes flapped like rags around his body. “How old are you?”

At first, he hesitated. “Sixteen.”

He really was just a boy. Probably haven’t even turned yet.

“I can’t keep calling you boy. Tell me your name.” I sat down on his bunk, watching him, contemplating.

“You’re not my friend,” he spat out.

I snorted out a laugh. “You know, I was younger than you are now when I became king. And you’re right, a king has no friends, only followers.”

“Thaddeus. My name’s Thaddeus.”

I smiled slightly. Now we were getting somewhere. “Well, Thaddeus, can you tell me who you are afraid of? The people you said who’d kill you if you told on them?”

He sank down into a corner, hugged his knees to his chest. “I don’t know who he was. Couldn’t see his face.”

I didn’t believe him. “Such a pity you don’t want to tell me. Oh well…”

I got up from the cot and linked the guard.

“See that he is cleaned and get him fresh clothes, feed him and bring him to my office.” I ordered the guard.

I didn’t turn around to know that the boy stared at me like I had gone mad. And maybe I had.

Sorin found me on the way to my office.

“Your Beta seems to spend a helluva lot of time with your queen, Amaris. Aren’t you that smug smirk on his face that made me want to push my fist into it.

worried?” He had

“Get out of my face, Sorin!” I didn’t have the patience to deal with him, nor did I need to explain myself to him.

“Just saying…” He kept pace with me. “What are your plans with the Blood Fang pack? I heard the bodies are to be sent back to them. You know they will rise up against you, Amaris.”

“Don’t you have anything better to do than stick your long nose in my business, Sorin? I turned a corner and saw Ross with Raine. They seemed engaged in a deep conversation and didn’t see me.

Sorin caught my frown and lifted his lip and one eyebrow. “I would worry if I were you, but I’m not, so…” He turned away dismissing me with a wave of his hand.

When Raine saw me, she came to meet me. I shouldn’t let Sorin get under my skin, but being my brother, he knew just the right buttons to push. I trusted Ross and I knew Raine was mine, only mine. Besides, Ross was mated to a lovely she-wolf. But still…
